Checked 31 October 2026. Steps and timings are from two Northern adverts re-read on 31 Oct 2026 and Northern's careers page (read 23 Oct 2026); they differ between campaigns, and the advert you apply to decides. Reported questions are candidates' own accounts on Rail Forums, cited to each thread with its date; Northern does not publish its questions and may change them. The plan and tips are ProSyllabus advice.
Northern's train driver interviews are competency-based: a poster who described the format in March 2024 said you introduce yourself and your work history, then answer 10 scored questions that open with three or four of: why you applied, what a driver does, your similar skills and what you know about Northern, then "tell me about a time" questions; a candidate in November 2024 listed ones on an emergency, following rules and dealing with an angry person. The stages vary by campaign: one current advert has a telephone interview followed by an in-person interview, another an online assessment and a Hiring Manager Assessment Day, with the psychometric tests in Leeds before or after the interview. Every reported question below links to the Rail Forums thread it came from.
Checked on 31 October 2026 against two Northern adverts (read 31 October 2026), Northern's careers page (read 23 October 2026; it refused our reader on 31 October) and the Rail Forums threads cited beside each point (read 31 October 2026; the 2016 threads from Internet Archive copies). Forum posts are candidates' and other posters' accounts or advice, not Northern's material. Questions in the table are quoted as posted; everything else from the forums is our summary, with the date, because questions change between campaigns. ProSyllabus is an independent study site. It is not part of RSSB, the Office of Rail and Road, The OPC or any train company, and nothing here is official test material.
Northern's process after you apply, with timings
The two Northern Manchester adverts we read on 31 October 2026 describe different routes, so read the one you applied to. Both say the whole process takes about six months, and that you may hear nothing for 8 to 12 weeks after applying because of the volume of applications.
| Step | Advert A (posted 20 Oct 2026) | Advert B (another Manchester advert) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Initial screening of your application | Initial screening of your application |
| 2 | Online assessment | Telephone interview |
| 3 | Train driver psychometric test at Northern's assessment centre in Leeds | In-person interview |
| 4 | Hiring Manager Assessment Day, if you meet Northern's standard in the psychometric test | Psychometric testing |
| 5 | Conditional offer, subject to a training course place and the medical | Conditional offer, subject to a training course place and the medical |
Northern's careers page (read 23 Oct 2026) also places an interview with the Driver Management Team in Leeds, asking competency-based questions, before the psychometric assessments. Either way you face at least one interview. Advert A also says anyone who interviewed for a driver position within one year could be rejected automatically, so check the rule in the advert before you apply. Requirements, pay and training are in our Northern trainee train driver guide.
The telephone interview
Advert B puts a telephone interview straight after screening, and candidates on Rail Forums mention passing one before an in-person stage (posts of 2 November 2024 and 21 February 2025). None of the posts we read lists the telephone questions, so we do not guess them. Our advice: expect a shorter version of the opening questions in the next section (why you applied, the role, Northern), answered in a minute or two each, and have your notes on Northern and your depot open in front of you.
Northern's interview and assessment day: what candidates report
In a post dated 27 January 2025, a candidate described Northern's new interview day in detail (post of 27 January 2025). They called it "4 tasks" before the interview part, which they did not reach. In our summary of their words:
| Task | What the candidate described |
|---|---|
| Group task | A puzzle solved as a team: working out the time a train arrived at a station from facts on a sheet |
| Cab-view tasks (two) | Watching a cab view on a TV while making a block of Lego from verbal tasks, along with observations on the screen |
| Long cab view | A cab view about 30 minutes long, tallying when you saw a red light, a speed change and so on |
| Role play | Staff act out poor communication between a driver and a signaller; you note what was wrong and why |
On 21 February 2025, another candidate reported passing the telephone interview and being told the day had five activities, including a group task, one listed as "Signal" and a scenario question, and another poster replied that the day was new for Northern and details were slim (posts of 21 February 2025). The January 2025 poster said a few attendees felt it was rushed. Treat these as two 2025 accounts of a format that may have changed. Northern's advert of 20 October 2026 names a Hiring Manager Assessment Day but does not list its activities, so whether it matches these accounts is not confirmed. Northern's careers page says its psychometric assessments have paper tests, computer tests and a multimodal interview; the tests are explained in our guide to every train driver psychometric test and what happens on the assessment day.
What the tasks have in common (our reading)
- Attention while doing something else: the cab-view tasks reward steady scanning, the same skill as the attention tests. Practise on timed attention sheets.
- Communication: the role play is about precise, safety-critical messages: repeat back, use clear words, confirm understanding.
- Working with others: in the group task, assessors can only score what they see, so share your working, listen, and check the answer together.
ProSyllabus advice based on the two candidates' accounts above.
Competency interview questions Northern candidates report
A poster who described the format in March 2024 said you introduce yourself and your work history first (not marked), then answer 10 competency-based questions, each scored with equal weighting, and that the first three or four are always three or four of the first four opening questions below (post of 4 March 2024). A candidate who passed in January 2024 called that advice "spot on" and added: research Northern's website and use what it is passionate about in your answers (same thread, 5 March 2024). A candidate who passed and was due to start training in January 2025 said, on 2 November 2024, that the interviewer probes each answer: "Why did you do it like that?" "Why not this way?" (post of 2 November 2024).

Some posts suggest what to prepare rather than report what was asked. In 2016 a poster said Northern's questions were all competency-based and gave "Give an example of when you have undertaken a repetitive task" as an example (Rail Forums, 17 May 2016). A reply to a Northern candidate in 2024 (26 September 2024) suggested: a time you dealt with an emergency, a stressful situation, and working to rules or instruction; plus "tell us what you know about northern and why you want to work for us" and "why should we choose you over everyone else". The March 2024 poster listed the themes of the later questions: concentration, customer service, problem solving, emergency situations, decision making, learning and following rules (post of 4 March 2024). In 2016 a Sheffield candidate said the panel "wanted to know some routes, stations etc" and asked which routes ran from Sheffield (Rail Forums, 3 Apr 2016). The 2016 posts are older, and Northern has changed owner since, so prepare for the themes, not a script.
Answer them well
- For "tell me about a time" questions, use STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result), keep the action the longest part, and say "I", not "we". The March 2024 and November 2024 posters above both recommend STAR.
- Mention safety where it is genuinely part of your example: the November 2024 poster stressed that the railway is "BIG on safety".
- Our train driver interview questions guide has 30 questions grouped by these same themes, with six model answers free, five of them in STAR form.
Advice from the posts cited above and ProSyllabus.
The Driver Manager interview at Northern
Northern's careers page names its interviewers as the Driver Management Team, asking competency-based questions; its October 2026 advert calls the later stage a hiring manager interview on the Hiring Manager Assessment Day. The order has changed over time. Posts in 2016 (Rail Forums, 3 and 4 April 2016) and in February and March 2024 (Rail Forums) put the Driver Manager Interview first, before the tests; one 2016 poster added that the assessment day of about 6 hours included "a second 1 Hour long interview", probably the multimodal interview in the psychometric assessment (the post does not say). Advert A of October 2026 instead puts the hiring manager interview after the psychometric test. One 2016 poster said there were two managers on the panel and no HR person, and a reply said the managers are the ones scoring you (Rail Forums, 27 April 2016). Prepare your company knowledge (your depot, Northern's routes, how you will manage the shifts) and be ready for follow-up questions on any answer (our advice). Advert A gives you the facts to use: you must currently live within a 45-minute car journey of the station you would work from, commit to early, late and weekend shifts without relying on public transport, and the course is about 12 months within a 2-year apprenticeship (its careers page says 64 weeks; confirm which applies to your campaign).
How to prepare in the 2 weeks before
A plan for the fortnight before a Northern interview or interview day (ProSyllabus advice):
| Days | What to do |
|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | Re-read your advert and invitation. Note your depot, the stage you are at and anything to bring. Read Northern's careers and news pages and write five facts you can use: routes from your station, its values, recent investment. |
| 3 to 4 | Write answers to the four opening questions: why this role, what a driver does, your similar skills, what you know about Northern. Speak each in under two minutes. |
| 5 to 8 | Write one STAR example for each theme posters report or suggest: emergency, rules, angry person, stress, repetitive task, concentration, customer service, problem solving, decision making, learning. Use the free list in our 30-question guide. |
| 9 to 10 | Practise out loud with someone who asks "why did you do it like that?" after each answer. Cut long situations; add detail to thin actions. |
| 11 to 12 | If your day includes tasks, practise attention while listening: watch a cab-ride video and count red signals while someone reads you instructions. Practise repeat-back. |
| 13 to 14 | Light review. Plan the journey, ID and timings. Sleep well the night before. |
Frequently asked questions
What questions does Northern ask in a train driver interview?
Posters on Rail Forums report opening questions on why you applied, your understanding of the driver's role, your similar skills and what you know about Northern, then "tell me about a time" questions about emergencies, following rules and procedures, dealing with an angry person and other competencies. One 2024 poster described 10 scored questions after an unmarked introduction. Northern does not publish its questions.
Does Northern do a telephone interview for train drivers?
One of the Northern Manchester adverts we read on 31 October 2026 says that if you pass the initial screening you are invited to a telephone interview, then an in-person interview, then psychometric testing. Another advert uses an online assessment instead. Follow the steps in the advert you applied to.
What happens at a Northern train driver assessment day?
The psychometric assessments (paper tests, computer tests and a multimodal interview, Northern's careers page says) are at its assessment centre in Leeds. One October 2026 advert also names a Hiring Manager Assessment Day without listing its activities. A candidate posting in January 2025 described a day with a group puzzle, cab-view tasks while making a Lego block from verbal tasks, a 30-minute cab-view tally and a driver-signaller communication role play; whether today's day matches that is not confirmed.
How long does Northern take to reply after an interview or application?
Northern's adverts say you may hear nothing for 8 to 12 weeks after applying and that the whole process takes about six months. A 2016 candidate was told to expect an interview result in a week to 10 days; it varies by campaign.
Can I reapply to Northern if I fail the interview?
One of Northern's current adverts says anyone who interviewed for a driver position within one year could be rejected automatically, so check the advert you apply to, and ask the recruitment team if you are unsure whether you can reapply. Failing the psychometric tests is a separate matter, covered by RSSB's attempt rules; see our retakes guide.
All our Northern and train driver guides are on the UK train driver exam page; for the attempt rules, see pass rates and retakes.
Some train companies add a fault finding test to the assessment. If your invitation mentions one, try 3 free questions in our driver fault finding test (DFFT) guide, then work one example step by step.
