Checked 27 October 2026. Facts are from Avanti West Coast's Train Driver Recruitment page (last updated 23 January 2025), its trainee driver adverts for Euston (posted 6 March 2026) and Holyhead (posted 19 September 2025), its qualified driver advert (posted 10 January 2025) and RSSB's 3751-FAQ, read 27 Oct 2026. Pay, age and depots change with each campaign: the advert you apply to decides.
To become an Avanti West Coast trainee train driver, you apply when a campaign opens, then pass five stages: an application, an online sift and online tests by The OPC, two OPC assessment centre stages (paper tests including the Group Bourdon, then computer tests and a competency-based interview), and a final Driver Manager Interview. Avanti's March 2026 Euston advert paid £47,100 from the start of training.
Checked on 27 October 2026 against Avanti West Coast's own recruitment page and adverts, and RSSB's FAQ on the selection standard. Our own advice is labelled as ours. ProSyllabus is an independent study site. It is not part of RSSB, the Office of Rail and Road, The OPC or any train company, and nothing here is official test material.
Is Avanti recruiting now? No Trainee Train Driver advert was open on Avanti's careers site on 27 Oct 2026. Avanti's recruitment page asks you to register your interest so it can email you when it next recruits trainee drivers. The most recent trainee advert we found was for its Euston talent pool, posted 6 March 2026 and now marked expired. It warned that Avanti may close an advert early if it gets a strong response, so preparing before the next campaign opens matters.
Who can apply to Avanti West Coast
Avanti's recruitment page names two main requirements: your age at the point of applying, and living within 1 hour of a depot. Its adverts add the rest. The age is the one point where its pages differ, so here is each with its date:
| Requirement | What Avanti says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum age | At least 20 on application (Euston advert, posted 6 March 2026). 20 and a half at the point of applying (recruitment page, last updated 23 January 2025, and Holyhead advert, posted 19 September 2025). | Avanti page and adverts |
| Where you live | Within 1 hour of a depot (recruitment page); within 60 minutes of the depot, able to make your own way there at all times, even outside usual public transport hours (both adverts). The OPC checks the distance at the online sift. | Avanti page and adverts |
| Qualifications | GCSEs (grade A* to C or equivalent) or Level 2 Functional Skills in maths, English and ICT skills. Without them you can still apply: if you are right for the role, Avanti says you can be supported to achieve them. | Holyhead advert |
| Shifts | Able to work shifts, including weekends and nights. | Both adverts |
| Tests and medical | Pass the psychometric assessments and the driver medical examination, including the Ishihara colour vision test. | Both adverts |
| Checks | A satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check before you start. | Euston advert |
| Previous attempts | The OPC checks whether you have sat the assessments before and are eligible to apply (see the attempt rule below). | Avanti page |
Read the age in the advert you apply to: the newest advert asks for 20, the older page for 20 and a half. The law itself allows a train driving licence from 18 since 30 June 2026, but a company can set a higher age of its own; the change is explained in our guide to becoming a train driver in the UK.

How to prepare for each OPC stage
Stage 1.5: the online sift
Nothing to prepare, but two things to check before you apply: that your home is within an hour of the depot in the advert, and how many attempts you have used (next section). The sift checks both.
Stage 2: the questionnaire and online tests
The OPC questionnaire looks at your interest in the role and why you want to be a train driver, Avanti says. Then come two online assessments:
| Test | What Avanti says it tests |
|---|---|
| Visual Search Exercise | Focus on visual cues, multitasking, maintaining concentration, and the ability to remain situationally aware |
| Magnificent 7 Situational Judgement Test (M7-SJT) | Conscientious, Humility, Motivated, Pride, Responsible, Risk Focus, Supportive |
Our advice: answer the questionnaire in your own words about the job as Avanti describes it (shifts, long periods alone, constant learning, respect for the rules), not about trains in general. For the situational judgement test, use the seven competencies Avanti names as your guide: in each scenario, look for the safest, most rule-respecting response that still looks after customers and colleagues.
Stage 3: the paper tests
| Test | What it measures |
|---|---|
| Group Bourdon | Attention: a paper concentration test. No official source we read publishes its layout or timing. |
| TEA-Occ (Test of Everyday Attention for Occupational Assessment) | Attention, the second paper test for the attention criterion |
| TRP 1 and 2 (Trainability for Rules and Procedures) | Memory and reasoning with rules and procedures |
Each test has its own guide: Group Bourdon practice, the TEA-Occ test, and the TRP tests in our guide to every psychometric test. RSSB says you will be given approved practice materials at least a week before your assessment, and to contact the train company if you have not received them; work through them first. Attention is the part you can train most directly, in short timed sessions: our 11 techniques for the Group Bourdon cover pacing and checking.

Play level 1 freeIndependent practice by ProSyllabus. Not the official test, not a copy of it, and not produced or checked by RSSB, an assessment centre or a train company.
Stage 4: the computer tests and the competency-based interview
Avanti says the Vienna tests at this stage focus on vigilance and reaction. Our advice: what you can train for them is staying alert on a dull, repetitive task for a long stretch. The same face-to-face stage includes Avanti's competency-based interview (CBI). What happens across the whole day, from arrival to results, is in our assessment day guide.
The interviews: Avanti's CBI and the Driver Manager Interview
Avanti lists a competency-based interview (CBI) at stage 4 of its own process. Avanti does not publish its CBI questions or marking. A competency-based interview asks you for real examples of what you have done; in our view, the seven competencies Avanti names for its situational judgement test and the qualities on its recruitment page (disciplined, customer focused, a healthy respect for the rules, a strong commitment to punctual services) are the best public guide to what it looks for.
Questions of this kind, grouped by those competencies (our own examples, not Avanti's questions):
| Competency (Avanti M7) | Example question |
|---|---|
| Responsible / Risk Focus | Tell me about a time you followed a rule or procedure when it would have been quicker not to. |
| Conscientious | Describe a task where accuracy mattered more than speed. How did you check your work? |
| Humility | Tell me about a mistake you made at work. What did you do next? |
| Motivated | Why do you want to drive trains, and why for Avanti West Coast? |
| Pride | Tell me about a piece of work you are proud of and why. |
| Supportive | Describe a time you helped a colleague or a customer under pressure. |
| Not an M7 competency: the job itself | How would you manage early starts, late finishes and long periods working alone? |
One worked answer, in the STAR format
Question: Tell me about a time you followed a rule or procedure when it would have been quicker not to.
Situation: I worked closing shifts at a warehouse. Before leaving, the procedure was to walk the whole floor and sign off every fire door, even when the last team swore they had checked.
Task: One night we were 20 minutes behind and my supervisor suggested signing the sheet from the office.
Action: I said I would rather do the walk, and offered to do it while he finished the paperwork, so it cost no extra time for him. On the walk I found one door wedged open with a pallet. I cleared it, closed the door and noted it on the sheet.
Result: We left 10 minutes late, with the building secure. My supervisor raised the wedged door at the next briefing, and the walk became a two-person check.
Why it works: a real, specific event; you chose the rule under time pressure; you solved the time problem without cutting the check; and the result shows why the rule exists. That is the respect for the rules Avanti asks for.
ProSyllabus example to show the structure, not a model to learn by heart: use your own events.
Stage 5, the Driver Manager Interview, is hosted by Avanti with its driver management team; pass it, Avanti says, and you enter the talent bank. Our advice: expect questions about Avanti itself and the job. Know its routes and stations, the depot in your advert, what the shift pattern means for your home life, and why you chose Avanti rather than another company.
Attempts: Avanti's lifetime rule and its enhanced standard
This is the most important paragraph on Avanti's page, and it is easy to miss. Avanti says that for the trainee driver process, individuals have two lifetime attempts: if they fail any stage more than twice, they cannot reapply, and these attempts count across every train operator. It also says Avanti and several other operators use an enhanced standard on the assessments, above the national standard. If you pass to the national standard but not to Avanti's, you use up an Avanti attempt but not an attempt with operators that use the national standard.
What this means before you apply
- Your first attempt anywhere counts at Avanti. The sift checks previous attempts across operators, so treat any company's assessment as a real attempt.
- Avanti's bar is higher than the minimum. A result that passes elsewhere may not pass at Avanti, so prepare to beat the pass mark, not just meet it.
- The national rule changed in December 2024. RSSB's FAQ says candidates starting from 7 December 2024 have three attempts: attempt 2 at least 1 year after the first failure, and attempt 3 at least 5 years after the first failure and at least 1 year after the second; Avanti's page (last updated January 2025) still describes two lifetime attempts. Ask Avanti's recruitment team which rule it applies to you before you use an attempt.
- Results last five years for assessments from 7 December 2024, RSSB says, and it recommends one application at a time, because results from one application affect all your others.
From Avanti's Train Driver Recruitment page and RSSB's 3751-FAQ, questions 14, 19, 28 and 29.
The national attempt rules, a date checker and a 12-month plan are in our guide to train driver retakes and pass rates.
Depots and the talent bank
Avanti recruits trainee drivers by depot, and each advert names one. The adverts we read were for London Euston (posted 6 March 2026) and Holyhead (posted 19 September 2025). Check the depot in the advert before you apply, because the 60-minute rule is measured to that depot.
Passing does not mean starting straight away. The Euston advert says successful applicants are placed in a talent bank and offered a role as and when one arises, and the recruitment page says that a pass at the Driver Manager Interview puts you in the talent bank.
Training
The Euston advert describes a structured two-year programme at the London Euston depot to become a fully qualified train driver, starting with up to 16 weeks of classroom training that combines academic learning with hands-on practical instruction. The Holyhead advert says training takes up to two years and can be intense. A trainee driver quoted on Avanti's page describes the 16-week classroom course with regular assessments, reviews, workbooks and logbooks, then the practical side of learning to drive with instructors and mentors.
Avanti West Coast train driver salary
Avanti puts the salary in each advert. These are its own figures, with the date each advert was posted:
Annual salary as stated in Avanti West Coast's adverts, read 27 Oct 2026. The trainee figures are the starting salary in training; the qualified figures are from an advert for fully qualified mainline train drivers. The March 2026 Euston advert says trainees have the potential to progress to over £80,000 within a few years; the recruitment page and the Holyhead advert say around £77,000.
The adverts also list a defined benefit pension scheme, free travel on the Avanti West Coast network for you and your family, and discounted travel with other train companies. The qualified driver advert lists 30 days' holiday, rising by 1 for each completed year of service to a maximum of 37, including bank holidays.
A preparation plan for the next Avanti campaign
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Now | Register your interest on Avanti's recruitment page. Check you are within 60 minutes of Euston, Holyhead or the depot you want, and find your GCSE certificates. |
| Before the campaign opens | Write down seven real examples for the CBI, one for each competency Avanti names. Practise attention in short timed sessions a few times a week. |
| When the advert opens | Apply early: the advert may close early. Check its age and depot criteria, and ask the recruitment team which attempt rule applies if you have sat the assessment before. |
| When invited to the assessment centre | Work through the approved practice materials, which RSSB says you will be given at least a week before (contact the train company if they have not arrived). Practise at the time of day of your assessment. |
| Before the Driver Manager Interview | Learn Avanti's routes and the depot, and prepare why Avanti and why driving, in your own words. |
The facts in each row are from Avanti's pages and RSSB's FAQ; the timing and the practice routine are ProSyllabus advice. A 14-day practice plan for the attention tests is in our Group Bourdon practice guide.
Frequently asked questions
How much does an Avanti trainee train driver earn?
Avanti's Euston trainee advert, posted 6 March 2026, gave a starting salary of £47,100; its Holyhead advert, posted 19 September 2025, gave £45,551. Avanti says trainees can reach around £77,000 within a few years, and the March 2026 advert says over £80,000.
How old do you have to be to train as a driver with Avanti West Coast?
The March 2026 Euston advert says at least 20 on application. Avanti's recruitment page, last updated January 2025, and its September 2025 Holyhead advert say 20 and a half at the point of applying. Check the advert you apply to.
What interview does Avanti use for trainee drivers?
Avanti lists a competency-based interview (CBI) at stage 4, at The OPC's face-to-face assessment centre, and a final Driver Manager Interview with its driver management team at stage 5.
How many attempts do you get at the Avanti train driver assessment?
Avanti's page says two lifetime attempts across all operators, and that because Avanti uses an enhanced standard, a pass at the national standard but not Avanti's uses an Avanti attempt. RSSB's FAQ allows three attempts for candidates starting from 7 December 2024, so ask Avanti which rule applies to you.
How long does the Avanti trainee driver process take?
Avanti does not publish a timeline. After the Driver Manager Interview you enter a talent bank and are offered a role as and when one arises; training then takes up to two years, starting with up to 16 weeks in the classroom.
Is Avanti West Coast recruiting trainee drivers now?
No trainee driver advert was open on Avanti's careers site on 27 Oct 2026. Avanti asks you to register your interest on its recruitment page so it can email you when it next recruits.
