M.Tech After GATE Mining: IIT ISM, KGP, BHU and NIT Cut-offs

A GATE Mining score opens two doors: a PSU job (see PSUs through GATE Mining) and an M.Tech. For the second, the institutes that matter publish their closing scores, and they tell a clear story. IIT (ISM) Dhanbad’s M.Tech in Mining Engineering opened its 2026 admissions at a UR closing score of 636 in Round 1 and closed at 418 by Round 10. Its new Mining of Critical Minerals programme went from 573 to 319. The NIT mining programmes on CCMT (Rourkela, IIEST, VNIT) closed at 352–362 in their last rounds — just above 350, the score the formula gives at the qualifying mark (our arithmetic). This guide collects those numbers and lets you check your own score against them.

Two cautions apply to every number here. First, most of these programmes admit several GATE papers (civil, geology, mechanical and others), and the cut-off is for the programme, not an MN-only figure. Second, first-round and last-round numbers are far apart because late rounds only fill seats that earlier candidates left; a score that misses Round 1 can still be admitted later, but you have to stay in the process.

The ISM series matters because it is the one institute that runs a full mining school. Its last-round UR closing score rose from 393 to 471 over three years before easing to 418 in 2026. Converted to 2026 marks, 418 is about 34 marks and the Round 1 figure of 636 about 50 (our arithmetic, using 2026’s MN formula — a convenience, since the programme also admits other papers). The new Critical Minerals programme had the lowest final-round UR figure in the ISM table, 319.

Kharagpur’s two mining programmes both jumped in 2026 — MI1 from 466 to 622 and MI2 from 495 to 640 for GEN — while its reserved-category cut-offs moved less or fell. BHU publishes one figure per programme for COAP 2025, with several categories closing above GEN, which happens when a category has few seats. Read these as “the score that was enough last time”, never as a floor.

CCMT, the common counselling for NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes, mapped 98 programme groups that accept a GATE MN score in 2026, of which 7 are mining-related (our count from the CCMT 2026 seat matrix). The table below shows the mining groups and the closest allied ones (geotechnical, excavation and tunnelling, construction management) — nine rows in all. Most of the rest are civil, environmental or management-adjacent programmes that take many papers. The mining-related ones:

The practical reading: at the NIT mining programmes, an OPEN candidate who qualified comfortably — a score around 350–370, about 29.5–31 marks in 2026 (357 at 30 marks, 371 at 31; our arithmetic) — has been admitted in a late CCMT round in both years. Round 1 is a different matter: Rourkela’s widest group opened above 490. SC and ST candidates have been admitted in the 220–330 range at several of these programmes.

For many MN candidates the real choice is between these seats and a Coal India offer. The numbers overlap: CIL’s UR first-list scores were 540 (GATE-2023) and 603 (GATE-2024), close to IIT Round 1 cut-offs. What differs is the career path. A mining engineer who wants to manage a mine needs a DGMS First Class Manager’s Certificate; under the Coal Mines Regulations 2017 the examination needs a mining degree plus 2 years of qualifying experience (Reg 15), and the certificate is required (Reg 27) to manage an underground coal mine producing more than 2,500 tonnes a month or an opencast mine above 20,000 m³ a month. A PSU trainee post builds that experience from day one; an M.Tech delays it by two years but leads to research, consultancy, specialised roles (geomechanics, tunnelling, safety) and the new critical-minerals field.
