View Complete ArticleChecked 25 September 2026. Compared against the official GATE 2027 XL syllabus PDF (IIT Madras) and the 2026 and 2025 PDFs as published on 25 September 2026. IIT Madras has already posted one post-release syllabus update for another paper (BT), so re-check the official page before the exam.
IIT Madras, which runs GATE 2027, has revised the syllabi of the GATE 2027 papers — and for Life Sciences it has also renamed the sections. XL-P to XL-U are now XL0 to XL5. If you started preparing from a 2026 book or a 2026 syllabus printout, some of what you are revising is gone and some of what will be asked is not in it.
We put the official 2027 PDF next to the 2026 and 2025 ones and compared them line by line. This page lists every real change — and only real ones. A lot of what is being published as "new" was already in the old syllabus, and one widely repeated claim is the opposite of what happened.
Where other pages get this wrong
Biochemistry (XL1) did not gain immunology in 2027. It lost it.
Commonly published instead: "The 2027 syllabus expands coverage of immunology."
The 2026 Biochemistry syllabus had a whole Section 6 on the immune system — innate and adaptive immunity, cells of the immune system, the complement system, antibody structure and diversity, B- and T-cell receptors and activation, and the MHC. In 2027 that section is gone. What survives is the techniques list (immunodiffusion, immunoelectrophoresis, RIA, ELISA, flow cytometry, monoclonal antibodies), now filed under Analytical Techniques, plus one line on antibody–antigen interaction. If you are taking Biochemistry, stop revising MHC restriction as a core topic.
Counts are ours, from the official 2025, 2026 and 2027 PDFs.
| Section | Old code | New code | How much changed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chemistry (compulsory) | XL-P | XL0 | Moderate — one new section (Bioinorganic Chemistry) |
| Biochemistry | XL-Q | XL1 | Major — restructured; immunology removed; techniques expanded |
| Botany | XL-R | XL2 | Additions only — named families, hormones, bioinformatics |
| Microbiology | XL-S | XL3 | Minor — sections merged; four additions, one removal |
| Zoology | XL-T | XL4 | Minimal — two small additions (comparative anatomy, Indian biodiversity hotspots) |
| Food Technology | XL-U | XL5 | Major — large additions across three of four sections |
Our count of distinct topics named in the official 2027 syllabus that were not in 2026 (added) or were named in 2026 and are not in 2027 (removed). Wording changes that keep a topic are not counted.
The paper itself is unchanged in shape: 100 marks, 3 hours, 65 questions. General Aptitude is 15 marks, XL0 Chemistry is compulsory for 25 marks, and you answer exactly two of the five optional sections for 30 marks each.
A syllabus change does two things to your preparation. It tells you where old material is now wasted effort, and it tells you where the examiners have signalled new interest. The second matters more. When a topic is newly written into a GATE syllabus, the paper-setters who wrote it usually intend to ask it — otherwise there was no reason to add it. Nothing guarantees a question, but new topics are worth more than their share of the old books suggests.
The asymmetry also runs the other way. Removing immune-system theory from Biochemistry does not mean immunology has disappeared from the paper: immune responses are still in the Microbiology syllabus (humoral and cell-mediated immunity, vaccines, immune deficiency) and in the Zoology syllabus (the immune system, cellular and humoral responses). A Biochemistry-plus-Microbiology candidate still needs immunology — just from the Microbiology side, and at the level that syllabus sets.
Finally, remember what did not change: the 65-question, 100-mark paper; the 15 marks of General Aptitude; 25 marks of compulsory Chemistry; and the rule that you attempt exactly two of the five optional sections, chosen inside the exam. Every strategy that worked in 2026 for the shape of the paper still works. Only the content inside some sections moved.
Chemistry is the section every XL candidate writes, so this is the change that touches everybody. It grows from nine sections to ten.
Why the new section matters: bioinorganic chemistry is exactly the bridge a biology graduate finds easiest. Haemoglobin cooperativity and metal centres in enzymes are marks a biologist can win back from a physical-chemistry-heavy paper.
The 2026 syllabus was six unnamed sections. The 2027 syllabus is six named ones, and the content has moved around a great deal. Here is what actually changed.
Net effect: XL1 is now more quantitative (two-substrate kinetics, buffers, spectroscopy) and more physiological (hormonal regulation, disorders), and less of an immunology course.
Nothing was taken out of Botany. Every change is an addition, and several are the kind of specific, listable facts that make easy one-mark questions.
Where other pages get this wrong
The APG system of classification is not new in 2027.
Commonly published instead: "APG classification and phylogenetics are topics absent or minimal in older syllabi."
The 2026 Botany syllabus already listed the "APG system of plant classification; phylogenetics and cladistics, molecular taxonomy and DNA barcoding" word for word. What is genuinely new in Systematics is the list of named families.
If Zoology is one of your two sections, a 2026 plan works almost unchanged. Add Indian biodiversity hotspots and move on.
Food Technology received more new material than any other section. Most of it is modern processing and food-safety content that appears in current industry practice.
Where other pages get this wrong
Food Engineering (XL5.4) barely changed — the only addition is thermal blanching and pasteurization.
Commonly published instead: Lists of "new" Food Engineering topics such as Fick's law, filtration, spray and freeze drying, psychrometry.
Those topics were all in the old syllabus. IIT Guwahati's 2026 XL syllabus PDF is cut off mid-sentence at "molecular diffusion and", so anyone diffing against it sees the rest of the section as new. The complete old text is in the 2025 PDF from IIT Roorkee, and it matches 2027 almost exactly.
Every topic below is newly named in the 2027 syllabus, so recent papers rarely test it and most 2026 books do not cover it. Your target is only three groups — XL0 Chemistry and your two optional sections — and each group shows its own count, so ignore the overall bar and watch those three.
| If you are taking | Do this now |
|---|---|
| Biochemistry (XL1) | Drop immune-system theory as a core topic; add two-substrate kinetics, Henderson–Hasselbalch problems, metabolic disorders and hormonal regulation. |
| Botany (XL2) | Make a one-page sheet for the nine named families; add peptide hormones, calcium signalling and basic bioinformatics/statistics. |
| Microbiology (XL3) | Add CRISPR–Cas, quorum sensing and sporulation. Nothing else to unlearn. |
| Zoology (XL4) | Keep your plan. Add Indian biodiversity hotspots. |
| Food Technology (XL5) | Budget an extra two weeks for non-thermal processing, D/Z/F-value numericals, probiotics, adulteration and the new standards. |
| Everyone (XL0) | Learn the four bioinorganic systems in XL0.4 and nucleophilic aromatic substitution. |
Practise it, don't just read it
The fastest way to find out whether a "changed" topic is actually a weak one is to answer ten questions on it.
The ProSyllabus GATE XL library maps onto the 2027 syllabus like this: Enzyme Kinetics Parameters and Lineweaver–Burk Plot Analysis → XL1.2 and XL0.7; Cell Membrane Transport → XL1.5 and XL3.4; Operon Regulation Mechanisms → XL3.9; Mendelian Inheritance Patterns → XL2.5 and XL4.3. Ten questions each, a worked explanation for every option, and a free AI report on where you lost marks. Topics new in 2027 are not in the library yet — use the syllabus and your textbooks for those.
Yes. IIT Madras revised the syllabus of every GATE paper for 2027. For Life Sciences the largest changes are in Biochemistry (restructured, immunology removed) and Food Technology (large additions); Chemistry gained a Bioinorganic Chemistry section; Botany and Microbiology gained smaller additions; Zoology is almost unchanged.
They are the new section codes. XL0 is Chemistry (compulsory; formerly XL-P), XL1 Biochemistry (XL-Q), XL2 Botany (XL-R), XL3 Microbiology (XL-S), XL4 Zoology (XL-T) and XL5 Food Technology (XL-U).
Only its techniques. The 2027 Biochemistry syllabus keeps immunodiffusion, immunoelectrophoresis, RIA, ELISA, flow cytometry, monoclonal antibodies and antibody-antigen interaction under Analytical Techniques, but the section on the immune system itself was removed. Immune responses are still covered in the Microbiology and Zoology syllabi.
No. It is still 100 marks in 3 hours with 65 questions: General Aptitude 15 marks, Chemistry 25 marks, and two optional sections of 30 marks each.
Yes, for most of the paper. Skip questions on topics that were removed (for example immune-system theory in Biochemistry, mass spectrometry, DNA microarrays) and add practice on the new topics listed on this page, which older papers will not cover.
