View Complete ArticleChecked 25 September 2026. Official dates are from the GATE 2027 site. The exact day of the XL paper within 6–21 February had not been announced; if it lands in the third week you gain up to two weeks of revision.
GATE 2027 is held on 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027. From the last week of September that is about nineteen weeks to the first exam day. Nineteen weeks is enough to prepare Life Sciences properly — if the weeks are spent on the right things in the right order.
This plan assumes you already know which two optional sections you will write (if not, decide that first) and that you can give GATE about three hours on each weekday and five to six hours on one weekend day — about 20–21 hours a week. If you are in your final year with semester exams in November–December, the plan builds in a lighter block for them.

Your two optional sections are 60 marks, Chemistry is 25 and General Aptitude is 15. A plan that spends hours in proportion to marks — and then adds extra time to your weaker optional section and to Chemistry, which is where biology graduates lose most — looks roughly like this:
| Part | Marks | Share of study time |
|---|---|---|
| Optional section A | 30 | ~30% |
| Optional section B | 30 | ~30% |
| XL0 Chemistry | 25 | ~28% |
| General Aptitude | 15 | ~12% |
Chemistry gets almost as much time as an optional section because it is compulsory, it is 25 marks, and it is the one part of the paper most life-science degrees do not prepare you for. The two optional sections start level at 30% each; once your first past paper shows which is weaker, shift about 5% of your time from the stronger to the weaker.
The table below assumes a 6 February paper and about 20 hours a week. Your numbers will differ: XL may be scheduled in the second or third week, and your week may have more or fewer free hours. Set both here and the planner splits your real total across the paper in the proportions above.
About 380 hours in total from 28 September to 6 February. That is enough to cover a section properly — roughly 110 hours each — but not enough to cover a third section as insurance.
Weeks 1–6, 7–11, 12–15 and 16–19. If XL falls later in February, add the extra weeks to revision, not to new material.
A full-length paper is worth about as much as the time you spend on it afterwards. Taking one and only checking the score tells you little you did not know. Sorting every lost mark into a cause tells you what to do next week — and the causes need very different fixes.
| Why the mark was lost | What it looks like | Fix next week |
|---|---|---|
| Did not know the topic | You could not start the question | Re-study the chapter; add 10 topic questions |
| Knew it, misread the question | Right method, wrong quantity or unit | Underline what is asked before solving |
| Calculation slip | Right setup, wrong number | Practise on the on-screen calculator only |
| Ran out of time | Questions at the end left blank | Two passes: easy questions first, then the rest |
| Lost to negative marking | Guessed MCQs that were wrong | Guess only after ruling out an option |
| MSQ partly right | Missed one correct option | Judge each MSQ option on its own — no partial credit |
If you are reading this in November or December, do not try to squeeze the full plan in — cut scope instead. The priorities below come from the marks: the two optional sections and Chemistry are 85 of 100, and the new-in-2027 topics are where old material will not help you.
| If you start in | Cut | Keep | First full paper |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early November (≈13 weeks) | Third-section insurance; deep organic chemistry | Both sections once, Chemistry Group 1 (XL0.10, 0.7, 0.5, 0.4) and Group 2 (thermodynamics, electrochemistry), PYQs by topic | Week 8 |
| Early December (≈9 weeks) | Inorganic and organic depth; GA beyond practice papers | Your stronger section fully, the other by PYQ topics, Chemistry Group 1 (XL0.10, 0.7, 0.5, 0.4) | Week 5 |
| January (≈5 weeks) | Anything not already studied once | PYQs from the last four years, mistakes review, one paper every 4 days | Week 1 |
Whatever your start date, keep one rule: never skip the daily Chemistry block. It is 25 compulsory marks, the section most life-science graduates are weakest in, and the one that improves most with short, frequent practice rather than long weekend sessions.
| Week | Optional sections | Chemistry (daily) | Practice |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 (from 28 Sep) | Syllabus diff; section A begins | Biomolecules | 1 untimed past paper |
| 2 | Section A | Reaction kinetics, enzyme inhibition | Chapter-wise PYQs |
| 3 | Section A | Equilibria, pH, buffers | Chapter-wise PYQs |
| 4 | Section B begins | Bioinorganic (new in 2027) | Textbook questions — no past papers cover it yet |
| 5 | Section B | Thermodynamics | Chapter-wise PYQs |
| 6 | Section B | Electrochemistry | Topic quizzes |
| 7 | A — numericals | Atomic structure, bonding | Topic quizzes |
| 8 | A — numericals | s, p, d-block; coordination | Sectional test |
| 9 | B — numericals | Organic mechanisms | Sectional test |
| 10 | B — numericals | Stereochemistry, tests | Sectional test |
| 11 | Weak chapters from notebook | Full XL0 revision | First full paper |
| 12 | Weak chapters | Mixed problems | Full paper + analysis |
| 13 | Weak chapters | Mixed problems | Full paper + analysis |
| 14 | New-in-2027 topics | Mixed problems | Full paper + analysis |
| 15 | Revision sheets | Formula sheet | Full paper + analysis |
| 16 | Revision | Formula sheet | 2 full papers |
| 17 | Revision | Formula sheet | 2 full papers |
| 18 | Mistakes notebook only | Sheet reading | 1–2 papers |
| 19 (to 6 Feb) | Sheets only | Sheet reading | 1 light paper |
If XL is scheduled in the second or third week of February, repeat weeks 16–17 once more before week 18 rather than starting anything new.
Practise it, don't just read it
Topic quizzes are built for Phase 1 and Phase 2: ten questions on one topic, marked instantly, with the explanation for every option.
The ProSyllabus GATE XL library maps onto the 2027 syllabus like this: Enzyme Kinetics Parameters and Lineweaver–Burk Plot Analysis → XL1.2 and XL0.7; Cell Membrane Transport → XL1.5 and XL3.4; Operon Regulation Mechanisms → XL3.9; Mendelian Inheritance Patterns → XL2.5 and XL4.3. Ten questions each, a worked explanation for every option, and a free AI report on where you lost marks. Topics new in 2027 are not in the library yet — use the syllabus and your textbooks for those.
For a candidate who studied life sciences at degree level, yes — about nineteen weeks remain from late September to the first exam day on 6 February 2027. The time is enough if both optional sections are covered by early November and full-length papers start in December.
This plan assumes about three hours on each weekday and five to six on one weekend day, roughly 20-21 hours a week. Final-year students can drop to about 90 minutes a day during semester exams, but should not stop entirely.
GATE 2027 is held on 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027. The day on which the XL paper falls had not been announced when this was checked; it will be in the official schedule on gate2027.iitm.ac.in.
Both, in parallel. Spend most of each day on one optional section, and add 45 minutes of Chemistry every day from the first week, starting with the parts closest to biology: biomolecules, kinetics, equilibria and bioinorganic chemistry.
From early December (around week 11), once both optional sections have been covered once. One paper a week in December and two a week in the final month is a sustainable pace, with as much time spent analysing each paper as taking it.
