GATE Philosophy (XH-C4) Marks vs Score vs Rank 2023–2026 + Calculator

GATE prints three different numbers and they are easy to mix up. Marks are what you scored out of 100. The qualifying mark is the cut-off for your category. The GATE score (out of 1000) is what an institute ranks you by, and it depends on how everyone else did. For a small paper like Philosophy, with about 570 candidates in 2026, a few marks move you a long way up the rank list. This guide puts all three numbers side by side for the four Philosophy papers with official reports, and includes a calculator that turns your mock-test marks into a score and an approximate rank on each year’s field.

The official formula is Score = 350 + 550 × (M − Mq) ÷ (M̄t − Mq), capped at 1000. M is your mark, Mq the General qualifying mark and M̄t the mean mark of the top 0.1% or top 10 candidates, whichever is larger. With only a few hundred candidates, M̄t for Philosophy is the mean of the top ten. A mark exactly at the qualifying mark always scores 350 and a mark equal to M̄t scores 900, so the whole scale is set by how the top ten did.

The qualifying mark comes from a second formula. For GEN it is the mean plus one standard deviation of all who appeared, but never below 25. From GATE 2025 it is also never above 40. OBC-NCL and EWS get 0.9 of the GEN figure, and SC, ST and PwD get two-thirds. The GATE 2024 brochure had no upper limit. In a normal Philosophy year the gap M̄t − Mq is about 16 to 21 marks, so each extra mark is worth roughly 26 to 35 score points. That is why a two-mark MSQ can move your score by 50 or more.

In 2025 the paper was easier or the field stronger: the mean rose to 33.86 and mean + SD reached 48.37. Under the 2024 rule that would have been the GEN qualifying mark. The new cap cut it to 40, and two things followed, both by our arithmetic. First, 233 of the 531 who appeared qualified (43.9%), against about 23–25% in the other years. Second, every score below the top-ten mean of 69.17 marks was pushed up, while the few marks above it came out slightly lower (70 marks: 916 with the cap, 922 without). The 2025 score bands are therefore far deeper than in other years: 500–600 covered ranks 55–86 in 2025 against 29–53 in 2026.

Work backwards when you set a target. On the 2026 field a score of 500 needed about 44.1 marks, 600 about 48.0, 700 about 51.9 and 800 about 55.8. On the capped 2025 field the same scores needed 48.0, 53.3, 58.6 and 63.9. Aim at the harder column: a year like 2025 can come again.

The distribution says something useful about targets. In 2026 only 24 candidates of 570 reached 50 marks, and only 4 reached 60. A mark of 50 on a 2026-type paper put you in roughly the top 25. For comparison, the 2026 IIT Madras Development Studies closing score for Philosophy, 847, fell in the band of ranks 5–9 (see our IIT Madras guide).

The statistical reports also print a qualifying score for each category. For 2025 and 2026 these match the formula (2026: 350 / 250 / 22). For 2023 and 2024 some do not. The 2023 report prints 221 for OBC and −81 for SC/ST/PwD, where the formula gives 253 and 27. The 2024 report prints 210 for SC/ST/PwD, the same as the OBC figure; the formula gives −112, because 26.1 marks was far below the GEN qualifying mark on a field with a low M̄t. We take these as errors in the reports. The qualifying marks are consistent everywhere, so quote those.
