View Complete ArticleChecked 28 September 2026. From the official GATE 2027 (IIT Madras) and GATE 2026 (IIT Guwahati) MN syllabus PDFs and the 2023–2026 MN papers and keys. The comparison, word counts and question mapping are ours.
IIT Madras, the organising institute for GATE 2027, has published a revised syllabus for Mining Engineering (MN). The six sections keep their names, and the revision is light — the syllabus text went from 583 words to 556 (our count, headings included) — but several lines moved, a few were removed, and some new phrases name topics that have already been appearing in papers. Below is the full line-by-line comparison, tied to the questions each changed line produced in 2023–2026, followed by a checklist and a planner. MN is a single paper with no allowed second paper in 2027, so this syllabus is the whole exam.
GATE 2026 and 2027 MN syllabi; GATE 2027 two-paper combinations.

| 6 Mineral Economics, Mine Planning, Systems Engineering | Ultimate pit configuration and its determination; optimum mill cut-off grade; stope planning; design of haul road; selection of mining system vis-à-vis equipment system; decision trees | Ultimate pit design; grade-tonnage relationship, ore dilution, recovery and cut-off grade; equipment selection | Cut-off grade / dilution / recovery: 2024 Q58–59, 2025 Q35 and Q45, 2026 Q46 |
Phrases compared by us between the GATE 2026 MN syllabus (IIT Guwahati) and the GATE 2027 MN syllabus (IIT Madras). Question numbers are from the official MN papers and final keys, classified by us.
Most of the changes are housekeeping. Ground vibration moved from Geomechanics to Mine Development, next to blasting, where the PPV questions of 2024 and 2026 already belonged. Rock-tool interaction moved from Development to Machinery. Haul-road work moved from Mine Planning to Surface Mining. These moves do not remove anything you have to study.
The substantive changes are in mathematics and in mine planning. In Engineering Mathematics, the Cayley-Hamilton theorem and tests for convergence are gone, and statistics is rewritten: joint and conditional probability, Bayes’ theorem, sampling theory and hypothesis testing, and Pearson correlation with linear regression are now named. In Mineral Economics and Mine Planning, the vague “optimum mill cut-off grade” is replaced by a named cluster — grade-tonnage relationship, ore dilution, recovery and cut-off grade — which the papers had been asking since 2024. Stope planning and decision trees leave the syllabus.
| Action | Topic | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Add or strengthen | Bayes’ theorem, joint and conditional probability | Newly named in section 1 |
| Add or strengthen | Sampling theory and hypothesis testing | Newly named in section 1 |
| Add or strengthen | Dump stability (with slope stability) | Newly named in section 3 |
| Add or strengthen | Grade-tonnage, dilution, recovery, cut-off grade | Named in section 6; asked 2024, 2025 and 2026 |
| Add or strengthen | Initiation systems for explosives | Newly named in section 2 |
| Add or strengthen | Safety data analytics | Replaces accident data analysis in section 5 |
| Add or strengthen | Astronomical survey | In the 2027 text, not in the 2026 text; a pole-star question appeared in 2023 |
| Can drop | Cayley-Hamilton theorem; convergence tests | Removed from section 1 |
| Can drop | Decision trees; stope planning | Removed from section 6 |
| Can drop | The room-and-pillar wording (bord and pillar stays); the GIS-basics wording (remote sensing stays) | Those words removed; the neighbouring topics are still listed |
Our reading of the two syllabi. “Can drop” means the line is no longer in the syllabus, not that a question can never touch it.
Two warnings. First, a removed line is not a promise. Cayley-Hamilton was asked as recently as 2026 (Q11); in 2027 a question on it would be outside the syllabus, but the matrix algebra around it (eigenvalues, rank) is still listed. Second, a new phrase is not necessarily new content. Grade and dilution questions have appeared in three straight papers; the 2027 wording only confirms that they belong.
Our classification of every question in the official MN papers 2023–2026. General Aptitude (15 marks) is separate.
| 2023 | 2024 | 2025 | 2026 | Section |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12 | 15 | 12 | 13 | 1 Engineering Mathematics |
| 11 | 11 | 12 | 14 | 2 Geology, Development, Surveying |
| 26 | 18 | 17 | 16 | 3 Geomechanics, Ground Control, Mechanics |
| 10 | 10 | 18 | 13 | 4 Mining Methods and Machinery |
| 13 | 15 | 16 | 17 | 5 Environment, Ventilation, Hazards |
| 13 | 16 | 10 | 12 | 6 Economics, Planning, Systems |
Subject marks out of 85, our classification. The GATE brochure allots about 13 marks to Engineering Mathematics; our count of borderline items (reliability, regression) varies from 12 to 15.
No section is small enough to skip. Section 3 was heaviest in 2023 (26 marks) but has settled at 16–18; section 5 has grown every year, from 13 to 17. For the question-level detail and the numericals that repeat, see GATE MN previous papers 2023–2026.
GATE 2027 exam days are 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027; the paper-wise schedule had not been published on 28 September 2026. MN ran on Saturday 7 February 2026, forenoon. Shares follow the 2023–2026 averages (ours).
Practise it, don't just read it
Once a section is ticked, test it. The GATE MN quizzes on ProSyllabus cover the syllabus by topic.
The ProSyllabus GATE MN library has topic quizzes on mine surveying corrections, rock mass classification, shaft sinking and winding, creep in rock, mine planning, mineral economics and underground hazards — the first quiz is free.
Lightly. The six sections are the same; some lines moved, a few were removed and some new phrases were added.
Cayley-Hamilton theorem, convergence tests, decision trees, stope planning, room and pillar as a separate method, GIS basics, and a few repeated phrases.
Bayes’ theorem and conditional probability, sampling theory, dump stability, initiation systems, safety data analytics, astronomical survey, and grade-tonnage, dilution, recovery and cut-off grade by name.
No. The 2027 combination table lists no second paper for MN.
No. Neither the 2026 nor the 2027 MN syllabus has a mineral processing section; only comminution machinery is listed, under Mining Machinery.
