Coal India MT Through GATE Mining: Every Cut-off List 2023–2027

Coal India Limited is the largest employer of GATE Mining candidates, and the only one with a Mining intake on GATE-2023, 2024 and 2025 scores and one already announced for GATE-2027 (none used GATE-2026). Its GATE-2025 advertisement (01/2026) recruits 276 Management Trainees, Mining only, and on 17 August 2026 it published a pre-advertisement saying the next intake will be filled on GATE-2027 MN scores. CIL also publishes something most PSUs do not: the GATE score of the last candidate selected in every category, list by list. This guide puts all eight of those lists in one table, turns each score into the raw marks it needed, and has a calculator to test your own marks.

The selection rule has been the same in all three advertisements. Qualified MN candidates apply online; CIL shortlists them category-wise in the ratio 1:3 in order of GATE score for document verification and the initial medical examination, and the final merit list is prepared on GATE score alone. There is no interview and no written test. Ties go first to the higher degree percentage and then to the older candidate. Each advertisement accepts one GATE year only — the 2025 text says scores “prior to or after GATE-2025” will not be considered — so a GATE-2026 score cannot be used for either the 2025 or the 2027 intake. CIL placed no intake on GATE-2026 at all (our reading of its careers pages on 28 September 2026).

Two changes between cycles matter. The GATE-2025 intake is placed in E-1 at a ₹60,000 basic and confirmed there as Officer (Mining) after a year, where the two earlier intakes started in E-2 at ₹50,000 and moved to E-3 at ₹60,000 after training and a test. And the 2027 pre-advertisement repeats GATE dates that have since changed: it says the GATE-2027 portal is open “14.08.2026 to 21.09.2026”, but IIT Madras opened applications on 2 September and now closes them on 5 October 2026 (regular) and 12 October 2026 with the late fee — after two extensions. GATE’s own dates govern.

Three things stand out. First, later lists go deeper: they replace selected candidates who did not join, so a score that missed the first list can still be called months later — the GATE-2023 UR cut-off fell from 540 to 415 over six months. Counting rows in the lists (our count), CIL named 433 candidates across the four GATE-2023 lists and 311 across the four GATE-2024 lists, against 351 and 263 posts. Second, the reserved-category cut-offs are far lower: an OBC-NCL candidate needed about 28 marks in 2023 and 32 in 2024; SC and ST candidates needed about 20–25. Third, the score, not the marks, is what CIL ranks. The same 38 marks produced a score of about 561 in 2023 and about 590 in 2024 (our arithmetic), because 2024 was the harder paper at the top — its top-0.1% mean was 54.77 against 58.833 — and the formula scales marks by how well the top candidates did.

Read the result as history, not a promise: the marks bands belong to those two papers only, scores do not carry across years, and CIL ranks by GATE score, so no marks figure guarantees a future list. The GATE-2025 intake has more UR posts (114) than the GATE-2024 intake’s first list could fill at 603, but no selection notice had been published by 28 September 2026, and the GATE-2027 advertisement has no post count yet. What the table does show is a band: in both published cycles the UR first list closed between about 37 and 39 raw marks, and the lists reached down to about 29–31 marks once replacements were called. The first-list scores sat in these official rank bands (our reading): 540 in the 2023 band 500–600 (ranks 95–212), 603 in the 2024 band 600–700 (ranks 75–148).

The 2027 pre-advertisement is one page. It says CIL is “looking for bright young Mining Engineering graduates based on GATE-2027 Score”, that candidates “must appear in GATE-2027 in Mining Engineering paper”, and that the detailed advertisement will be released on the CIL website “in the year 2027”. It gives no post count, eligibility, age or pay. Going by the three previous cycles, expect the application window some months after the GATE result on 19 March 2027: the GATE-2024 intake opened in October 2024 and the GATE-2025 intake in May 2026.
