Checked 25 September 2026. From SSC’s CHSLE 2026 notice, the CHSLE 2025 final vacancy list and first-allocation write-up, and SSC’s sliding-mechanism notices. Allowance rates are not published by SSC.
SSC CHSL fills clerical and data-entry posts across dozens of central offices — from the Intelligence Bureau and CBI to the Border Roads Organisation and the Defence Accounts Department. Which of them a candidate gets depends on two things: their Tier-II merit and the order in which they listed their preferences. Since 2026 there is also a new step, the FIX/FLOAT choice at identity verification. This guide explains the posts and pay levels, who hired in the last cycle, how allocation works and how to think about the preference list.

Where other pages get this wrong
SSC CHSL posts are LDC/JSA (Level 2), DEO (Levels 4 and 5) and DEO Grade ‘A’ (Level 4); Postal/Sorting Assistant is not a CHSL post in the 2023–2026 notices.
Commonly published instead: A single pay band of “₹19,900–92,300”, and PA/SA listed among CHSL posts with Level-4 pay.

The posts and pay levels
| Post | Pay level | Pay range |
|---|---|---|
| Lower Division Clerk / Junior Secretariat Assistant | Level 2 | ₹19,900 – 63,200 |
| Data Entry Operator | Level 4 and Level 5 | ₹25,500 – 81,100 / ₹29,200 – 92,300 |
| Data Entry Operator Grade ‘A’ | Level 4 | ₹25,500 – 81,100 |
Notice of CHSLE 2026, para 1. SSC does not state which DEO posts are Level 4 and which Level 5. Probation is two years, and all posts carry All-India Service Liability.
The pay level is what the job starts on; the rest of the salary — dearness allowance, house rent allowance and transport allowance — is set by Government orders and by the city of posting, and SSC does not publish it. So any “in-hand salary” figure you see for CHSL is someone’s calculation, not SSC’s. The tool below shows the entry basic pay for each level and lets you add the current DA and your city’s HRA rate yourself.
SSC CHSL starting pay — with your own DA and HRA rates
SSC prints only the pay levels. The first figure of each range is the entry basic pay. DA and HRA change with Government orders and the city, so enter the rates yourself.
Pay levels from the CHSLE 2026 notice: LDC/JSA Level-2 (₹19,900–63,200); DEO Level-4 (₹25,500–81,100) and Level-5 (₹29,200–92,300); DEO Grade ‘A’ Level-4. SSC does not say which DEO posts are Level-4 and which Level-5. The result is a gross figure before deductions and excludes transport and other allowances.
After joining
Everyone appointed through CHSL serves two years on probation, during which the controlling authority may require training or departmental examinations; confirmation follows only if the officer is “considered fit for permanent appointment”. All the posts carry All India Service Liability — they can be posted anywhere in India — and a user ministry may allot a State, UT or zone and require proficiency in its local language before confirmation. For candidates hoping to stay near home, those conditions matter as much as the department’s name when building the preference list.
| Term | What the notice says |
|---|---|
| Probation | Two years; training or examinations as prescribed |
| Service liability | All India Service Liability — anywhere in India |
| State or zone | May be allotted by the user department |
| Local language | Proficiency may be required for confirmation |

SSC final vacancy lists (2025 total row; 2024 our column sums, reconciling to SSC’s total). Ex-servicemen and PwBD vacancies are horizontal and counted inside these.
Most CHSL vacancies are LDC/JSA-type posts — 3,396 of 3,522 in 2025 — with 37 DEO posts and 89 posts coded JHAA at the Central Government Health Scheme (post code L53, per SSC’s 2025 vacancy list and FRTA corrigendum). DEO vacancies are a small share every year — our counts of SSC’s final vacancy lists give 24 in 2023 and 13 in 2024 — which is why the DEO Tier-I cut-offs run so much higher.
How allocation works: merit-cum-preference
After Tier-II, SSC collects each candidate’s option-cum-preference for posts and departments online. A candidate who does not submit preferences is not considered at all. Posts are then allotted strictly by merit: the highest-ranked candidate gets their first preference, and so on down the list. The rule that matters most is this: in the allocation, once a candidate is given the highest available preference, “he will not be considered for any other post”, and the preferences, once submitted, are final. The one exception since 2026 is the sliding round below, where a candidate who chooses FLOAT is considered again for a higher preference. A preference listed tenth is a promise to accept that post if it is the best one left.
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1 | Tier-II result; candidates submit option-cum-preference online (in 2025: 19–25 June 2026) |
| 2 | First round of tentative allocation (FRTA) by merit-cum-preference (2025: 17 August 2026) |
| 3 | Identity verification at the SSC regional office, with Aadhaar; the candidate chooses FIX or FLOAT (2025: 1–3 September 2026) |
| 4 | One sliding round: FLOAT candidates may move up into posts freed by absentees |
| 5 | Final result; document verification by the user department |

FIX or FLOAT
CHSLE 2025 is the first CHSL where the first allocation is not the final result. Every allotted candidate must attend identity verification at an SSC regional office within about ten days; anyone who does not is dropped and their post is freed. At identity verification the candidate chooses FIX — keep the allotted post, with no chance of an upgrade — or FLOAT — be considered for a higher preference freed by absentees. A floating candidate who is upgraded must join the new post and loses the earlier one. There is only one sliding round and no waiting list.
FIX or FLOAT at identity verification?
SSC sliding-mechanism notice 03.03.2026: after the first round of tentative allocation, candidates attend identity verification and choose FIX (keep the allotted post; no upgrade) or FLOAT (be considered for a higher preference freed by absentees; if upgraded, the candidate must join that post and loses the earlier one). There is one sliding round; candidates absent from identity verification are dropped.
Building the preference list
Three things are worth deciding before the preference window, not during it. First, list only posts you would actually join — allocation is binding, and a post listed carelessly can become yours. Second, check the conditions attached to each employer: BRO LDC posts are for men only with physical standards, many departments may post you anywhere in India, and some may require the local language of the state or zone allotted. Third, use the last-selected marks from previous cycles (our cut-off guide has them) to see which departments are realistic for your expected score, and put the ones you prefer most first even if they closed higher last year — a higher preference costs nothing if it is out of reach.
| Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Would I join this post if it were the only one offered? | Allocation stops at your highest available preference |
| Is the post open to me? | BRO LDC is men-only with physical standards; some DEO posts need Science with Maths |
| Where could I be posted? | All-India Service Liability; the user department may allot a State or zone |
| Is my score near its past last-selected marks? | UR last-selected marks ran from 294 (BRO) to 322 (NITI Aayog) in the 2025 first allocation |
Practise it, don't just read it
Every extra mark in Tier-II moves you up the merit list and past more departments’ closing marks. Arithmetic and English carry most of those marks, and our CHSL quizzes drill both.
The ProSyllabus SSC CHSL library has topic quizzes on percentage and profit and loss, simple and compound interest, spotting errors, computer basics and Indian polity — the first quiz is free.
