Checked 25 October 2026. The exam format and breakdown are as red-seal.ca showed them on 25 October 2026. Red Seal says exams based on the 2026 occupational standard are under development. The breakdown these questions are written to is the current one and may be superseded when those exams are introduced; check the Exam Information page for updates.
These are four practice questions for the Red Seal Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) exam, from four of the trade’s six Major Work Activities: rigging, shaft alignment, hydraulics and vibration analysis. Each has four options and one correct answer, and the answer below it explains the reason and names the sub-task of the occupational standard it was written to. They are not Red Seal questions and not Red Seal’s sample questions. Red Seal publishes its own sample questions for the trade, written by the same people who write the exam, and you should try those too. These four are ProSyllabus’s own, and they are the free sample of our practice exam.
ProSyllabus is an independent study site. It is not part of the Red Seal Program, Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), the Canadian Council of Directors of Apprenticeship (CCDA) or any provincial or territorial apprenticeship authority, and nothing here is the official exam. Every exam fact on this page is quoted or summarised from the official pages listed at the foot of the page.

How to use these questions
Work each question out before you open "Show the answer", and give yourself under two minutes for each: that is about the average time per question on the real exam. Three of the four are calculations: questions 1 and 3 give the formula from the sheet Red Seal supplies for this trade in the stem, and question 2 uses the rim-reading relationship explained in its answer. When you check an answer, read the explanation, and work out for yourself why each wrong choice is wrong. Red Seal’s own advice on practice questions is to ask why the right answer is right and why each wrong choice is wrong, because that is what carries over to a question you have not seen.
| Question | Major Work Activity | What it tests | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | B. Rigging, hoisting/lifting and moving | Using the formula sheet’s working load limit rule for wire rope | Calculation |
| 2 | C. Mechanical power transmission | Reading a rim indicator in a rim-and-face alignment | Calculation |
| 3 | E. Fluid power systems | The force a hydraulic cylinder produces | Calculation |
| 4 | F. Maintenance, commissioning and decommissioning | Reading a vibration pattern | Critical thinking |
Question 1: rigging, hoisting/lifting and moving
Question 1 · B. Rigging, hoisting/lifting and moving
Using the rule working load limit of a 6 × 19 wire rope = diameter² × 8 (tons, with the diameter in inches), what is the WLL of a 3/4 in. rope?
- (A) 4.5 tons
- (B) 3 tons
- (C) 9 tons
- (D) 6 tons
Show the answer
Answer: (A) 4.5 tons. RSOS sub-task B-7.02, Selects rigging equipment. Diameter² × 8 = 0.75² × 8 = 0.5625 × 8 = 4.5 tons. This is the rule of thumb given on the trade's formula sheet; the rope manufacturer's rated capacity governs on the job.
An original ProSyllabus question written to the Red Seal Occupational Standard. Not a Red Seal question, and not one of Red Seal’s sample questions.
Why this matters on the job: the formula sheet gives a quick rule, but the rope’s own rated capacity is what governs a lift. The rule is useful for a sense check: if a rope sling’s tag shows a capacity far from what the rule suggests, find out why before you rig with it. Rigging is 17 questions on the current exam, split across planning a lift (task B-7, 8 questions) and doing it (task B-8, 9 questions).
Question 2: mechanical power transmission
Question 2 · C. Mechanical power transmission
In a rim-and-face alignment, the rim indicator reads 0.010 in. between the top and the bottom of the coupling. What is the vertical offset of the shaft centrelines?
- (A) 0.020 in.
- (B) 0.0025 in.
- (C) 0.010 in.
- (D) 0.005 in.
Show the answer
Answer: (D) 0.005 in.. RSOS sub-task C-14.02, Performs dial alignment. The rim indicator sweeps a full diameter, so its total reading is twice the offset of the centrelines. Offset = 0.010 ÷ 2 = 0.005 in.
An original ProSyllabus question written to the Red Seal Occupational Standard. Not a Red Seal question, and not one of Red Seal’s sample questions.
Why this matters on the job: at the top and bottom positions, the shaft offset changes the rim reading in opposite directions, so the difference between the two readings is twice the vertical offset. Using the full rim reading as the offset doubles the parallel-offset part of the correction. Shaft alignment (task C-14) has 6 questions on the current exam, and the formula sheet also includes a separate alignment shim relationship, G × A ÷ B.
Question 3: fluid power systems
Question 3 · E. Fluid power systems
A hydraulic cylinder has a 4 in. bore. Using force = pressure × area and area of circle = π × radius², what force does it produce on extension at 1,500 psi?
- (A) About 75,400 lb
- (B) About 4,712 lb
- (C) About 18,850 lb
- (D) 6,000 lb
Show the answer
Answer: (C) About 18,850 lb. RSOS sub-task E-21.02, Diagnoses hydraulic systems. Radius = 2 in., so area = 3.1416 × 2² = 12.57 in². Force = 1,500 × 12.57 = about 18,850 lb. Using the diameter in place of the radius gives four times too much.
An original ProSyllabus question written to the Red Seal Occupational Standard. Not a Red Seal question, and not one of Red Seal’s sample questions.
Why this matters on the job: force equals pressure times area, and the area depends on the radius squared, so using the diameter where the radius belongs makes the answer four times too big. The same rule works backwards when a cylinder will not lift its load and you need to know what pressure it should take. Hydraulic systems (task E-21) carry 12 questions, more than any other single task on the exam.
Question 4: preventative and predictive maintenance
Question 4 · F. Maintenance, commissioning and decommissioning
A motor and pump show high axial vibration with strong peaks at 1× and 2× running speed. What is the most likely cause?
- (A) A defect on the outer race of one of the pump bearings
- (B) Misalignment between the motor and pump shafts
- (C) Cavitation at the pump suction
- (D) Imbalance of the pump impeller
Show the answer
Answer: (B) Misalignment between the motor and pump shafts. RSOS sub-task F-23.02, Performs vibration analysis procedures. Misalignment typically produces high axial vibration (angular misalignment) and strong 1× and 2× components, often with a 2× peak higher than usual. Imbalance is mainly radial at 1×, localized rolling-bearing defects typically produce characteristic frequencies that are not synchronous with shaft speed, and cavitation gives broadband noise.
An original ProSyllabus question written to the Red Seal Occupational Standard. Not a Red Seal question, and not one of Red Seal’s sample questions.
Why this matters on the job: vibration patterns point to causes. A strong once-per-revolution radial reading points to imbalance, a pattern with high axial vibration and strong 1× and 2× peaks points to misalignment, and peaks at frequencies that are not whole multiples of running speed point to rolling bearing defects. Knowing which is which saves a balancing job on a machine that needed an alignment. Preventative and predictive maintenance (task F-23) carries 11 questions.
What the full practice exam covers
Each of the two full mocks in the ProSyllabus practice exam has 135 questions, with exactly the number of questions per task that Red Seal publishes for this trade. The four questions on this page come from outside the mocks, so buying the mocks does not repeat them. The table compares the real exam and the mocks.

One difference to be aware of: Red Seal says the current exam is based on the 2017 occupational standard and that exams based on its newer 2026 standard are still being developed. These questions follow the 2017 standard and its breakdown. The published breakdown may change when exams based on the new standard are introduced; check the Exam Information page for updates. Our exam guide compares the two standards’ weightings.
Using practice questions well
Red Seal is direct about outside practice material. In its Preparation Guide it says it does not endorse any test preparation company, that questions on a practice test from an outside source are very unlikely to be similar to those on the Red Seal exam, and that memorising practice questions may not help. We agree with the advice, and it is how the mocks are meant to be used: take one before you study to see which tasks cost you marks, study those tasks from the standard and your own references, then take the second to see what changed. Your result shows your score by Major Work Activity and your time per question, so you can see both what you got wrong and where you ran slow.
Independent practice from ProSyllabus
Start with Red Seal’s own sample questions and self-assessment. ProSyllabus sells an independent Red Seal millwright practice exam: two timed mocks of 135 questions in four hours, each with exactly the number of questions per task in the published breakdown, with your score by Major Work Activity and the reason behind every answer. The questions are our own, written to the sub-tasks of the occupational standard; none comes from Red Seal’s sample questions or the real exam, and it is not the official exam or endorsed by Red Seal. Four questions are free, on the practice questions page. A practice score does not guarantee a result on the real exam.
Frequently asked questions
Are these real Red Seal exam questions?
No. They are ProSyllabus’s own questions, written to the sub-tasks of the Red Seal Occupational Standard. They are not Red Seal exam questions or Red Seal sample questions, and this is not the official exam.
Where can I find official Red Seal millwright practice questions?
Red Seal publishes sample questions for the trade on red-seal.ca, along with a self-assessment and an Exam Preparation Guide.
How many questions are on the real exam?
135, Red Seal says, spread across 24 tasks of the occupational standard, with a writing time of four hours and a pass mark of 70%.
Do I need to memorise formulas?
Red Seal publishes a formula sheet for this trade and says it is provided with the exam sitting. Knowing what each formula means and when to use it matters more than memorising it.
Does the ProSyllabus practice exam follow the published breakdown?
Yes. Each of its two mocks has 135 questions with exactly the number of questions per task that Red Seal publishes for the current exam.
Will passing the ProSyllabus mocks mean I pass the real exam?
No. A practice score does not guarantee a result on the real exam. The mocks follow the published format, but the questions are ours, and Red Seal says questions on a practice test from an outside source are very unlikely to be similar to those on the exam.
