The Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) interprovincial exam runs to 135 multiple-choice questions, ten more than the Automotive Service Technician paper. Mechanical power transmission is the largest single block at 32 questions, or 23.7 per cent of the paper, ahead of common occupational skills at 25 questions.

The six Major Work Activities are A common occupational skills at 25 questions, B rigging, hoisting, lifting and moving at 17, C mechanical power transmission at 32, D material handling and process systems at 24, E fluid power systems at 21, and F preventative and predictive maintenance and commissioning at 16. Unlike the automotive and heavy duty blueprints there is no very small block: the spread from 16 to 32 questions is comparatively even, so no section can safely be written off. The interprovincial Red Seal paper is allowed four hours in British Columbia.

No national sitting dates exist for this trade. British Columbia publishes a downloadable annual exam schedule with fixed sessions, while Ontario lets you pick a date and time in the Portal, so the practical booking experience differs materially by province.
What this means for your preparation
Millwrights arriving from outside Canada, or from another province, routinely assume that because Red Seal is a national programme the entry route is national too. It is not. Red Seal publishes the standard and the blueprint; provinces and territories decide who is eligible, how many hours count, what the assessment costs and how many attempts you get. The second common error is importing a study plan from another mechanical trade, because this paper is weighted very differently.
This paper rewards memory more than the others
Between 30 and 40 per cent of the millwright exam is knowledge and recall, compared with 5 to 15 per cent on the Automotive Service Technician and Heavy Duty Equipment Technician papers. Critical thinking is only 20 to 30 per cent here, against 35 to 45 per cent on heavy duty. In practice that means definitions, classifications, component naming, standard clearances, bearing and coupling designations, lubricant grades and rigging capacities carry real, direct marks. A candidate who spends the whole revision period on diagnostic scenarios, which is the correct approach for automotive, is optimising for the smallest third of this exam. Build recall drills into the plan deliberately, then layer application practice on top.
Mechanical power transmission is a quarter of the paper
Major Work Activity C alone is 32 of 135 questions, 23.7 per cent. Combine it with D, material handling and process systems, at 24 questions, and E, fluid power systems, at 21, and those three blocks are 77 questions, 57 per cent of the exam. Shafts, bearings, couplings, gearing, belt and chain drives, alignment, pumps, compressors, conveyors, hydraulics and pneumatics are where a pass is won. Rigging, hoisting, lifting and moving at 17 questions and preventative and predictive maintenance and commissioning at 16 are smaller but not marginal, and at a 70 per cent pass mark neither can be abandoned.
Do not treat common occupational skills as padding
At 25 questions, 18.5 per cent, block A is the second largest on this blueprint. On the heavy duty paper the equivalent block is only 10 questions and on automotive only 8, so millwright candidates who have seen another trade's sheet consistently under-rate it. Block A covers safety practice, lockout and tagging, hazard controls, documentation and work orders, measurement and layout tools, and communication with operations and engineering. These are examinable in their own right, not just as context for mechanical questions. Twenty-five questions is more than the entire fluid power section, and losing most of them makes the required 70 per cent arithmetically very hard to reach.
Hours and eligibility are decided provincially
Alberta sets the millwright apprenticeship at four periods of 1,560 on-the-job hours, 6,240 in total, with eight weeks of technical training per period, and treats the Red Seal Endorsement as an optional exam on completion. Ontario requires either a Certificate of Apprenticeship or approval through a Trade Equivalency Assessment costing 235 dollars plus HST, with hours counted at roughly 1,800 per year of full-time work. British Columbia runs a separate challenge application at 120 dollars with contactable references and about 10 to 12 weeks of processing, longer for experience earned outside Canada. Start the eligibility file before the study plan.
Book the attempt you can actually afford to fail
Ontario charges 150 dollars plus HST per attempt, waives the first for apprentices completing from 1 January 2025 onward, and enforces a 30-day wait plus a repeat fee after a failure. British Columbia allows unlimited rewrites on the apprenticeship pathway, free for the first two attempts and 100 dollars from the third, with a completions team contacting candidates before a fifth attempt. The challenge pathway in BC is capped at four attempts in total since 1 December 2023, all of which must fall inside the 24-month approval window. Sit when prepared, not when the booking page is convenient.

Is the millwright exam harder than the automotive Red Seal exam?
It is different rather than uniformly harder. Millwright has more questions, 135 against 125, and a much larger recall component, 30 to 40 per cent against 5 to 15 per cent on automotive. Automotive loads 40 to 50 per cent of its paper onto critical thinking, while millwright allocates only 20 to 30 per cent there. Candidates strong at diagnostic reasoning may find automotive more natural; candidates with solid theory and component knowledge often find millwright more tractable.
How many hours do I need to become a millwright in Canada?
There is no single national figure because apprenticeship hours are set provincially. Alberta requires four periods of 1,560 on-the-job hours, 6,240 hours in total, plus eight weeks of technical training per period. Ontario instead assesses experienced workers through a Trade Equivalency Assessment, requiring hours at least equal to the prescribed total training time for the trade and counting roughly 1,800 hours per year of full-time employment. Can I challenge the millwright exam as an internationally trained tradesperson?
Usually yes, but only after an assessment. Skilled Trades Ontario's Trade Equivalency Assessment is explicitly open to applicants with experience from outside Canada and costs 235 dollars plus HST, with reassessment at 100 dollars plus HST. SkilledTradesBC's challenge route costs 120 dollars to apply, requires references who can be telephoned and employer verification, and takes about 10 to 12 weeks, longer where the experience is foreign. Approval is not certification; you still sit the same exam.
What can I take into the millwright exam room?
In British Columbia, very little. SkilledTradesBC states that for Certificate of Qualification and Red Seal exams, study materials, code books and personal calculators are not permitted because all required materials are supplied at the sitting. Identification must be original, legible and unaltered, with a driver's licence, passport, permanent residency card, provincial ID card or BC Services Card accepted. Rules are set by the administering jurisdiction, so confirm with the authority that issued your authorisation to test.
How many times can I retake the millwright Red Seal exam?
It depends on both your province and your pathway. On the SkilledTradesBC apprenticeship pathway rewrites are effectively unlimited, with the first two attempts free and 100 dollars from the third, and outreach from a completions team before a fifth. On the BC challenge pathway the cap is four attempts in total, in force since 1 December 2023.
