RBI Grade A Pay After Promotion: How an Assistant's Basic Is Fixed

Checked 30 September 2026. The scales are those printed in RBI's 2026 recruitment notices (Assistant PY2025, Non-CSG PY2026, Grade B PY2026). Gross figures move with dearness allowance and each notice gives its own. The fixation rule is Reg 69(2)(i) of the Staff Regulations in the compilation updated to 21.04.2005, subject to the Bank's instructions.

An officer in Grade A starts at a basic pay of ₹62,500 a month, in a scale that runs for 17 years to ₹1,26,100; RBI put the initial gross (without house rent allowance) at about ₹1,26,540 in February 2026 [official]. But a promoted Assistant does not simply start at ₹62,500. Regulation 69(2)(i) of the Staff Regulations fixes the new pay at the Grade A stage equal to or next above the current pay plus one increment. This guide lays out the three scales that matter, applies that rule to real Assistant pay points (our arithmetic, labelled), and explains where Grade A sits in the Bank's A-to-F ladder.

Every rule below is quoted or summarised from a published document, and the Bank's Human Resource Management Department (HRMD) decides every promotion and every application.

Read this first: how much is public

The scales and the fixation rule are official. The worked examples are our arithmetic.

  • [official] Assistant, Grade A and Grade B scales and gross figures, from RBI's 2026 recruitment notices.
  • [official] The fixation rule, Regulation 69(2)(i), from the Staff Regulations compilation "updated upto 21st April 2005". Reg 69(1) makes it subject to the Bank's special or general instructions, which are not public.
  • Ours: every fixed-pay figure in the tables and the calculator. HRMD's fixation order is the only authority on your pay.
  • [reported] The officers' association's August 2026 dispute about financial upgradation (press report).

All three notices add house rent allowance of 15% of pay if the employee does not live in Bank accommodation. The two Grade B gross figures come from two notices two months apart with the same basic and scale; the change is most likely a dearness-allowance revision (our reading). We quote the later one, with its date. A Grade B direct recruit may also be given up to four advance increments (official, PY2026 notice).

Starting basic pay by grade (₹ a month)
Assistant (Class III)₹29,000
Officer Grade A₹62,500
Officer Grade B₹78,450

Official: the 2026 recruitment notices. Starting basic is the first stage of each scale, not what a promotee is fixed at.

Look at the top of the Assistant scale: it ends at ₹78,640, well above the Grade A start of ₹62,500 (our observation from the official scales). An Assistant who has served long enough to climb the scale therefore lands well up the Grade A scale, not at its first stage. That is the whole point of Regulation 69.

The rule: Regulation 69(2)(i)

The Staff Regulations say that on promotion "from a post in Class III to Class I", the employee "shall, on such appointment, draw pay at the stage in the higher grade which is equal to or next above the pay notionally arrived at by increasing the actual pay drawn in the lower grade by one increment at the stage at which such pay is drawn". If the employee was at the maximum of the lower scale, the notional increment is equal to the last increment in that scale [official]. The same rule applies to promotion from one Class I grade to another.

Applying it in three steps (our summary of the text)

  • Take your actual basic pay in the Assistant scale today.
  • Add the increment that applies at that stage (for example ₹3,370 if you draw ₹64,480). At the maximum of ₹78,640, add the last increment, ₹4,050.
  • Find the first stage in the Grade A scale that is equal to or higher than the result. That is your new basic.

Two cautions. Regulation 69(1) makes this subject to "such special or general instructions as may be issued from time to time by the Bank", and the public text of the Regulations is a compilation updated to April 2005. A temporary promotion can also be fixed lower, at the Governor's discretion.

Pay-fixation calculator: your Assistant basic to a Grade A stage

Pick the basic pay you draw today on the Assistant scale. The calculator adds one increment at that stage (the last increment if you are at the maximum), then finds the Grade A stage equal to or next above the result, as Regulation 69(2)(i) describes.

Our application of Reg 69(2)(i) of the Staff Regulations (compilation updated to 21.04.2005) to the scales printed in the 2026 recruitment notices. Regulation 69(1) makes it subject to the Bank's own instructions, so HRMD's fixation order is the answer, not this tool. Basic pay only; allowances, personal allowances and stagnation increments are not modelled.

Worked examples of Reg 69(2)(i) on the 2026 scales, for readers whose browser does not run the calculator. All fixed figures are our arithmetic, not RBI's. ₹78,640 is the maximum of the Assistant scale, so the last increment (₹4,050) is used.

Three things stand out (our reading of the table). First, anyone whose notional pay is below ₹62,500, which on these scales means a basic of ₹58,580 or less, is fixed at the first stage, ₹62,500; the jump is largest for the most junior promotee. Second, from ₹61,530 upward each step up the Assistant scale moves you one stage up the Grade A scale, and the monthly rise in basic settles at roughly ₹4,500 to ₹6,400. Third, even a promotee at the Assistant maximum lands at ₹85,000, stage 7 of 17, so there is room to grow before the efficiency bar at ₹1,05,250.

Where Grade A sits in the ladder

Officers are graded from A (lowest) to F, above which sit Executive Directors, Deputy Governors and the Governor. RBI's RTI disclosure on scales of pay shows the six grades, but with pre-revision figures only (Grade A 11,250 to 22,500), so it is useful for the shape of the ladder, not for pay. The 2018-19 Annual Report glosses Grade C as "Assistant General Managers". Current scales for Grades C to F are not published in any notice we found.

The live dispute: financial upgradation after 7 or 5 years

In August 2026 the RBI Officers' Association wrote to the Governor that the promotion policy announced on 26 May 2026 "falls short" [reported]. It said the Bank's negotiating committee had offered Financial Upgradation after 7 years in Grades A, C and D, the Association did not accept, and the Bank issued the circular anyway; the Association wants 5 years of qualifying service for upgradation in every grade up to E and time-bound promotion up to Grade E (Business Standard, 10.08.2026). The circular itself is internal and we have not seen it. For a new promotee the practical point is that how fast you move beyond Grade A is under negotiation right now; ask your Regional Office HR for the current circular.

What is the starting basic pay of RBI Grade A?

₹62,500 a month, in the scale 62500–3600(4)–76900–4050(7)–105250–EB–4050(4)–121450–4650(1)–126100, a 17-year scale. The initial gross without HRA was about ₹1,26,540 in RBI's February 2026 notice.

Will I start at ₹62,500 if I am promoted from Assistant?

Only if your pay plus one increment is ₹62,500 or less. Regulation 69(2)(i) fixes you at the Grade A stage equal to or next above your current pay plus one increment. A senior Assistant is fixed higher; at the Assistant maximum of ₹78,640 our arithmetic gives ₹85,000.

How is the increment chosen?

It is the increment at the stage you currently draw. At the maximum of the Assistant scale, the rule uses an increment equal to the last one in the scale (₹4,050).

What is the RBI Assistant pay scale?

₹29,000 rising to ₹78,640: 29000–1700(3)–34100–2040(4)–42260–2720(6)–58580–2950(2)–64480–3370(3)–74590–4050(1)–78640, with an initial gross without HRA of about ₹58,514 (PY2025 notice).

Is the calculator official?

No. It is our application of the published rule to the published scales. The Bank's instructions under Reg 69(1) may change the result, and HRMD issues the actual fixation.

What is the Grade B pay?

₹78,450 starting basic in a 16-year scale to ₹1,41,600; initial gross without HRA about ₹1,54,936 in the April 2026 notice (₹1,53,675 in the February 2026 notice).

Do Grade C to F scales appear in any notice?

Not in any 2026 notice we found. RBI's RTI disclosure shows the six grades only with old, pre-revision figures.
