That is the smallest science-stream PGT allocation in the notification: Physics carries 213, Chemistry 227 and Biology 146. Coaching portals later reported a revised figure of 98 Mathematics posts after the vacancy revision.</p>

Tier-1 is common to every post and carries no subject Mathematics. Everything mathematical sits in Tier-2, where the whole 100 marks are Mathematics and 40 of them are descriptive. Tier-1 deducts one mark for a wrong answer out of three per question; the Tier-2 objective section deducts 0.25.

This calendar is common to every subject and post in Recruitment Notification 01/2025, not specific to Mathematics; PGT Mathematics candidates sat the same Tier-1 on the same two days as PGT Physics, PRT and Principal applicants. The post-Tier-1 dates come from coaching portals reporting CBSE announcements rather than from a notice we could read on kvsangathan.nic.in. The application window closed in three stages: 4 December 2025 as notified, extended to 11 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 5 December, and reopened until 15 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 13 December for candidates whom the KVS/NVS qualification mismatch had blocked, after Corrigendum-2 aligned the two sets of qualifications.

The commonest mistake among PGT Mathematics applicants is preparing as though the old KVS pattern still applied. Notification 01/2025 replaced the single 180-question composite paper with a two-tier scheme in which Tier-1 contains no Mathematics at all and Tier-2 contains nothing else. The second mistake is underrating how few Mathematics posts exist: 80 in the notification, against 213 for Physics.

Tier-1 decides nothing but excludes plenty

Tier-1 is described in the notification as a qualifying paper, and shortlisting for Tier-2 is 1:10 against notified vacancies. With 80 Mathematics posts that is roughly 800 candidates from a national applicant pool, so the qualifying paper is in practice a severe filter even though its marks do not enter the final merit. Its content is general: reasoning, numeric ability, basic computer literacy, general knowledge and two language sections, 100 questions for 300 marks in two hours, with one mark deducted for each wrong answer. Mathematics graduates usually clear the numeric ability part comfortably and lose ground on computer literacy and general knowledge, which reward a few weeks of ordinary current-affairs and basic-IT revision rather than mathematical ability.

Forty marks of Tier-2 are written answers

Tier-2 is 70 questions for 100 marks in two and a half hours: 60 one-mark objective questions and 10 descriptive questions worth 40 marks between them. For Mathematics that descriptive block is the part candidates prepare least. It asks for worked solutions and reasoning set out on paper, which means legible proof structure, stated hypotheses and correct notation, not just a final answer. Because the final merit is 85 per cent Tier-2 and 15 per cent interview, those 40 descriptive marks are roughly a third of the whole selection. Practising full written solutions under a clock, and budgeting the two and a half hours so the descriptive section is not attempted in the last twenty minutes, matters more here than extra objective drilling.

Postgraduate level, and the official unit list is elusive

The notification sets the Tier-2 standard for PGT posts at postgraduate level, against graduation level for TGT and senior secondary for PRT, and directs candidates to the detailed syllabus published under the recruitment heading on the KVS and NVS websites. We could not open that subject-wise Mathematics document from the official syllabus page while preparing this note, so we are not going to reproduce a unit list we have not read. Coaching summaries describe the Mathematics scope in broad terms such as algebra, calculus, geometry, statistics and probability, which is indicative only. Treat the official syllabus PDF on kvsangathan.nic.in as the authority and check it before building a revision plan around any third-party list.

Negative marking differs between the two tiers

The two papers penalise guessing at different rates and candidates routinely carry the wrong habit from one to the other. Tier-1 questions are worth three marks each and a wrong answer costs one mark, a third of the value. Tier-2 objective questions are worth one mark each and a wrong answer costs 0.25. The Tier-2 ratio is the milder of the two, so an informed elimination down to two options is worth attempting there, while a blind guess in Tier-1 is expensive. There is no sectional cut-off in either paper, so time is better spent on the sections a Mathematics candidate scores fastest in than on forcing a weak section to a notional minimum.

No published Mathematics cut-off to aim at

KVS has historically published post-wise and subject-wise cut-offs, but the subject figures circulating for earlier cycles, such as PGT Physics at 120 for unreserved candidates, come from 2018-19 under the older 70:30 written-to-interview pattern and do not include Mathematics. Coaching portals report that Tier-2 qualifying marks in the current cycle fall somewhere between 67 and 113 depending on post and category, which is a range, not a target. Rather than chase a number, note the structural point: with 80 posts and a 1:3 interview shortlist, the Mathematics merit list is short and closely bunched, so the descriptive marks and the demonstration lesson decide outcomes more often than in the large-vacancy subjects.
