NVS PGT Chemistry at a glance

Chemistry appears nowhere in Tier-1, which is a general 100-question, 300-mark screening paper. The Chemistry syllabus governs Tier-2 alone, and Tier-2 supplies 85 per cent of the final merit.

Dates and windows

Every date here except the Chemistry result phase is common to all subjects in Recruitment Notification 01/2025 and to both KVS and NVS. The 21 August declaration is the one item specific to Chemistry. The application window closed in three stages: 4 December 2025 as notified, extended to 11 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 5 December, and reopened until 15 December 2025 by the CBSE notice of 13 December for candidates whom the KVS/NVS qualification mismatch had blocked, after Corrigendum-2 aligned the two sets of qualifications.

What this means for your preparation

Chemistry candidates lose marks to arithmetic, not to chemistry. The syllabus is only 19 senior-secondary units and a Master's holder knows the content, but roughly a third of those units are calculation-driven: thermodynamics, equilibrium, solutions, electrochemistry and kinetics. With 0.25 deducted per wrong objective answer and 60 objective questions sharing two and a half hours with ten written answers, a candidate who is slow on numericals is squeezed on both accuracy and time.

The syllabus splits three ways, unevenly

Counting the 19 published units, physical chemistry takes Basic Concepts, Structure of Atom, Chemical Thermodynamics, Equilibrium, Redox Reactions, Solutions, Electrochemistry and Chemical Kinetics. Inorganic takes Classification of Elements and Periodicity, Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure, d and f Block Elements and Coordination Compounds. Organic takes Some Basic Principles and Techniques, Classification of Hydrocarbons, Haloalkanes and Haloarenes, Alcohols Phenols and Ethers, Aldehydes Ketones and Carboxylic Acids, Amines and Biomolecules. Organic therefore has the largest unit count and is the block most often left to the end. Note also what is absent: no p-block chapter is separately listed, no polymers and no chemistry in everyday life, so time spent there is time not spent on what is examinable.

Ten descriptive answers carry 40 marks

The written section is worth two-thirds as much as the whole objective section while having a sixth as many questions, so each descriptive answer is worth about four marks against one. In Chemistry that usually means a mechanism, a derivation or a structured numerical: the SN1 and SN2 pathways, the Nernst equation applied to a cell, buffer and solubility product calculations, crystal field splitting in an octahedral complex, or the distinction between order and molecularity with an integrated rate law. These reward clean stepwise working with units carried through. Unlike the objective section there is no deduction for a wrong descriptive answer, so an incomplete attempt is always better than a blank.

121 posts and what the ratios imply

With 121 NVS Chemistry vacancies, the 1:10 Tier-1 screen admits roughly 1,210 candidates to the Tier-2 paper and the 1:3 Tier-2 screen admits roughly 363 to interview. Chemistry sits eighth of the twelve NVS PGT subjects by post count, below Physics at 186, Mathematics at 167 and Biology at 161. Candidates who assume the two laboratory sciences recruit alike are wrong by a wide margin: Physics has 65 more NVS posts than Chemistry. CBSE has not published any category-wise minimum qualifying mark, so the effective cut-off is set purely by where the 1:3 line falls in each category.

What the interview stage now asks

The Chemistry result of 21 August signals shortlisting for interview, which carries 100 marks and 15 per cent of final merit. Because the post is in a fully residential school, the notification's own description of the work is the best guide to the questions: house mastership, remedial and supervisory study, and co-curricular organisation sit alongside teaching, and appraisal covers the residential system. For a Chemistry teacher that translates into laboratory storage and disposal of reagents in a boarding campus, supervision of practical work outside timetabled hours, and running remedial sessions for students whose schooling before JNV was uneven.

Choosing NVS over KVS, or both

One application covered as many posts as a candidate wished to apply for, and the notification says a candidate applying for similar posts in both organisations pays the fee for a single post, so applying to KVS Chemistry and NVS Chemistry together cost nothing extra and involved no second paper. The difference is entirely in the posting. NVS means a rural residential JNV, compulsory campus residence, rent-free accommodation as available, and initial posting anywhere in India with requests for change of station or region not entertained. The notification also says efforts are made to post male and female teachers in proportion to the number of girl students.

Common questions

When was the NVS PGT Chemistry Tier-2 result declared?

On 21 August 2026. CBSE's press note of that date says Tier-II results for PGT Chemistry, along with Assistant Commissioner and Junior Translator, were being declared for KVS and NVS. That was the fourth of twelve result phases running from 17 August to 14 September 2026. For posts with an interview, the result shows whether the candidate has been shortlisted rather than a full marksheet; marksheets follow within 15 days of the final result once the interview process is complete.

How many NVS PGT Chemistry vacancies are there?

One hundred and twenty-one on the NVS side of the vacancy table in Recruitment Notification 01/2025, made up of 50 unreserved, 12 EWS, 32 OBC-NCL, 18 SC and 9 ST, with five posts reserved horizontally for candidates with benchmark disabilities. That places Chemistry eighth among the twelve NVS PGT subjects. KVS Chemistry posts are counted in a separate column of the same table, so the two totals should not be added together when judging competition for a Navodaya posting.

What is in the NVS PGT Chemistry Tier-2 syllabus?

Nineteen units at senior-secondary level: Basic Concepts of Chemistry, Structure of Atom, Classification of Elements and Periodicity, Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure, Chemical Thermodynamics, Equilibrium, Redox Reactions, Organic Chemistry Basic Principles and Techniques, Classification of Hydrocarbons, Solutions, Electrochemistry, Chemical Kinetics, d and f Block Elements, Coordination Compounds, Haloalkanes and Haloarenes, Alcohols Phenols and Ethers, Aldehydes Ketones and Carboxylic Acids, Amines, and Biomolecules. There is no post-graduate content in the list, so preparation at M.Sc depth is wasted effort.

Is there negative marking in the NVS PGT Chemistry paper?

Yes, in the objective section of Tier-2, where a quarter mark is deducted for each wrong answer among the 60 objective questions. The descriptive section of ten questions worth 40 marks carries no deduction. Tier-1, the general screening paper, is harsher: a full mark is deducted for each wrong answer out of its 100 questions and 300 marks. Since Tier-1 is used only for screening at 1:10 and contributes nothing to merit, guessing there costs a place in the subject paper rather than rank.

What qualification is needed for NVS PGT Chemistry?

A Master's degree in Chemistry, or in any specialisation of the concerned subject, with at least 50 per cent marks, plus a B.Ed from an NCTE-recognised institution with at least 50 per cent or a three-year integrated B.Ed-M.Ed with 50 per cent. Candidates must be able to teach in both Hindi and English medium. The maximum age is 40 years, with relaxations of five years for SC and ST, three years for OBC-NCL, ten years for women applying to teaching posts and further relaxation for PwBD and ex-servicemen.

Is NVS PGT Chemistry different from KVS PGT Chemistry?

Not as an examination. Both are recruited under the same Notification 01/2025, sat the same Tier-1 on 10 and 11 January 2026 and the same Tier-2 on 28 March 2026, and share the same 19-unit syllabus and the same 85 plus 15 merit formula. The difference is the workplace. A Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya is a fully residential school, largely rural, where the teacher lives on campus and carries house mastership and supervisory duties, and where initial posting is anywhere in India with change-of-station requests not entertained.
