IIT Guwahati has officially scheduled the Textile Engineering (TF) paper for the first morning of the 2026 window. This single-session paper requires a sharp focus on technical accuracy.

Exam Pattern & Question Types
The TF paper consists of 65 questions totaling 100 marks. The paper is balanced between polymer chemistry, mechanical engineering principles, and chemical processing.
• MCQ (Multiple Choice): 1 or 2 marks with standard negative marking (1/3 or 2/3).
• MSQ (Multiple Select): One or more options can be correct. No negative marking. Frequently used for fibre properties and testing standards.
• NAT (Numerical Answer): Precise calculation required. No negative marking. Critical for spinning and weaving production calculations.

Core Syllabus: The Technical Pillars
To target an AIR under 50, you must master these domain-specific areas:
1. Fibre Science: Polymerization kinetics, molecular weight determination, and morphology of natural and synthetic fibres.
2. Yarn Manufacture & Structure: Ginning, Opening/Cleaning, Carding, Combing, and Ring/Rotor spinning systems. Focus on production and twist calculations.
3. Fabric Manufacture & Structure: Winding, Warping, Sizing, and Weaving mechanisms (Shuttle & Shuttleless). Knitted and Non-woven fabric basics.
4. Textile Testing & Chemical Processing: Fibre/Yarn/Fabric testing, Pre-treatments, Dyeing, Printing, and Finishing techniques.
Engineering Math for Textile Science
Apart from the 13 marks of Engineering Math, many technical questions in TF rely on Probability & Statistics for quality control and Calculus for polymer kinetics.
• Linear Algebra: Eigenvalues for structural vibrations in textile machinery.
• Statistics: Normal distribution and confidence intervals for textile testing results.
Success Roadmap for 2026
1. Zero-Error in Production Numericals: Nearly 30% of the paper involves NATs related to production efficiency and yarn geometry. Master the virtual calculator early.
2. Fibre Properties Table: Create a master comparison table for Cotton, Silk, Wool, Polyester, and Nylon (Birefringence, Density, Moisture Regain). This is a goldmine for MSQs.
3. Revision of Chemical Recipes: Dyeing and finishing recipes/pH values are frequently tested. Memorize the standard chemicals used for different fibre classes.
4. PYQ Drills (2015-2025): TF questions often repeat concepts in spinning and weaving kinematics. Solve the last 10 years of papers to identify the IIT Guwahati trend.
