Programmes that accept a GATE score for psychology

Checked on the institutes' current admission pages; wording and thresholds change every cycle. IIT Kanpur's Humanities PhD is the only one we found that names the XH paper itself and sets a rank threshold.

What "top 5% of XH candidates" has meant in practice

IIT Kanpur's rule is the only rank threshold we found. Its page says "within the top 5% of candidates who appeared for the Humanities and Social Sciences (XH) paper" — the whole XH paper, not Psychology alone. Because XH ranks are issued per section, how IIT Kanpur applies this is for the institute to confirm. The table below shows one reading — top 5% of Psychology candidates — as estimates from the official appeared counts and mark distributions.

Two things follow. The rank number grows with the field — about 134 to about 309 in three years — while the bar itself stays at 5%, so a bigger number is not an easier bar. And the marks that reached it swung with the paper, from about 47 in a hard year to about 73 in an easy one, on these estimates.

GATE Psychology vs UGC NET Psychology vs CUET PG

Because NET comes first, many M.A. Psychology students write it in December and GATE in February, keeping whichever result is stronger for PhD applications. The two reward different things: UGC NET's Paper I covers teaching and research aptitude, and its Psychology paper is long and without negative marking; GATE XH puts 40 marks on aptitude and reasoning, and its Psychology section is shorter and heavy on research methods, with negative marks on MCQs.

Writing both NET and GATE: a month-by-month plan

The switch in late December is the one that catches people out. UGC NET has no negative marking and rewards broad recall; GATE penalises wrong MCQs and puts a quarter of its marks on puzzles, arithmetic and critical reasoning. Give yourself at least five weeks of reasoning practice and timed GATE papers after NET, rather than assuming NET preparation carries over.

What is the scope of GATE Psychology?

Mainly PhD admission and PhD fellowship at IITs and similar institutes. Programmes such as the Humanities PhDs at IIT Kanpur, IIT Delhi, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Jodhpur and IIT (ISM) Dhanbad accept GATE or UGC NET. We found no current PSU advertisement naming the XH paper.

Can I get into M.A. Psychology through GATE?

Generally no. Master's admissions in psychology run through CUET PG and institute entrance tests. The Humanities programmes that name GATE are PhD programmes.

How much is the GATE PhD fellowship?

The GATE 2027 opportunities page quotes ₹37,000 a month for the first two years and ₹42,000 for years three to five for direct-PhD scholars with a valid GATE score, under the Ministry of Finance circular of 21 June 2023. Confirm with the admitting institute the rate for a PhD after a master's degree.

Is GATE Psychology better than UGC NET?

They serve different purposes. UGC NET gives Assistant Professor eligibility and JRF; GATE does not give lectureship eligibility but is accepted for IIT PhD admission and fellowship. Most IIT programmes accept either, so many candidates write both.

What rank does IIT Kanpur need for a Psychology PhD?

IIT Kanpur's Humanities admission page asks for a GATE all-India rank within the top 5% of candidates who appeared for the XH paper, or JRF/NET in a relevant discipline. Check the current page before applying, as rules change each cycle.
