Checked 3 October 2026. Compared against the official GATE 2027 BT syllabus PDF (IIT Madras) and the 2026 and 2025 PDFs as published on 3 October 2026. IIT Madras has revised the brochure more than once since July; re-check the official page before the exam. The BT paper date and session were not announced.
IIT Madras, which runs GATE 2027, revised the Biotechnology syllabus in July 2026. The notifications page records "Please note updates on BT syllabus" with Information Brochure version 1.1 on 23 July 2026, and the syllabus file itself was produced that day. The new syllabus has six sections instead of seven, and the biggest change is not an addition. It is a deletion.
We put the official 2027 PDF next to the 2026 and 2025 ones and compared them word for word. This guide lists every real change and only real ones, because a lot of what is being published as "new" was already in the 2026 syllabus. Then it turns the result into a topic tracker and an 18-week plan, which is ours and is labelled as ours.
Where other pages get this wrong
The 2027 BT revision did not add CRISPR-Cas, bioinformatics, immunology, epigenetics or systems biology. They were already there.
Commonly published instead: Pages that say the revision "revised over half the content" and "added new topics such as CRISPR-Cas, genomics, next-generation sequencing, bioinformatics, proteomics, immunology, epigenetics and systems biology", and that date it 28 July.
CRISPR-Cas, bioinformatics resources and search tools, a full immunology list, epigenetics, and metabolic engineering and systems biology are all in the 2026 syllabus. Our word-for-word comparison finds about 80% of the sequence unchanged. What is genuinely new in tools is that sequencing is now named as "Sangers and next generation sequencing" and that "DNA-protein and protein-protein interaction tools" and "genomics and proteomics-based approaches" are listed. The official notice and the PDF are dated 23 July, not 28 July.
Section and heading counts are from the official PDFs; the 80% and the 63 of 425 are our arithmetic.
Section by section: 2026 against 2027
| 2026 section | 2027 section | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Engineering Mathematics | 1. Engineering Mathematics | Small additions: multivariable calculus with gradient, divergence and curl; Bayesian statistics |
| 2. General Biology | 2. General Biology | Microbiology loses ecology and interactions and gains operons, Archaea, two-component systems; immunology list rewritten and longer; biochemistry names pathways |
| 3. Genetics, Cellular and Molecular Biology | 3. Genetics, Cellular and Molecular Biology | Minimal: bacterial gene mapping and sex determination added; prokaryotic cell structure no longer named |
| 4. Fundamentals of Biological Engineering | (removed as a section) | Engineering principles, thermodynamics and bioenergetics, transport processes: not in the 2027 syllabus |
| 5. Bioprocess Engineering and Process Biotechnology | 4. Fundamentals of Biological Engineering | Renamed and merged: bioreaction engineering, upstream and downstream processing (control folded in), with longer kinetics and reactor wording |
| 6. Plant, Animal and Microbial Biotechnology | 5. Plant, Animal and Microbial Biotechnology | Almost unchanged: cell fate transition and organogenesis added for plants |
| 7. Recombinant DNA technology and Other Tools | 6. Recombinant DNA technology and Other Tools | Sequencing wording expanded; interaction tools and genomics and proteomics approaches added; gene transfer technologies dropped |
The paper itself has not changed shape: 65 questions, 100 marks, three hours, General Aptitude 15 marks, subject 85 marks with 13 of them Engineering Mathematics. The two-paper table has widened: in the 2026 brochure BT could be combined with BM or XL, and the tentative table in the 2027 brochure adds ES and EY.
The big change: three headings gone
The 2026 syllabus had a section called Fundamentals of Biological Engineering. It listed three things that the 2027 syllabus does not:
No longer named in 2027
- Engineering Principles Applied to Biological Systems: material and energy balances for reactive and non-reactive systems; recycle, bypass and purge; stoichiometry of growth and product formation; degree of reduction, electron balance and theoretical oxygen demand.
- Classical Thermodynamics and Bioenergetics: laws of thermodynamics; solution thermodynamics; phase equilibria and reaction equilibria; ligand binding; membrane potential; energetics of metabolic pathways.
- Transport Processes: Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids; laminar and turbulent flow; mixing in bioreactors and mixing time; molecular diffusion and film theory; oxygen transfer and kLa; conductive and convective heat transfer, LMTD, heat exchangers.
Source: GATE 2026 and GATE 2027 BT syllabus PDFs. The 2027 section 4 keeps Bioreaction Engineering and Upstream and Downstream Processing.
Past papers asked these topics every year. By our count they supplied 12, 8, 11, 13 and 19 of the 85 subject marks in 2022 to 2026 (14.8% over five years; our placement of eleven contested questions moves the five-year total between 53 and 74, listed in our weightage guide). The 2026 paper was the heaviest: degree of reduction and growth stoichiometry, oxygen transfer, mixing, fluid flow and Gibbs energy together made up about a fifth of the subject marks.
The full question-by-question count is in GATE BT topic-wise weightage, counted from official papers. Treat the removed headings as lower priority rather than as zero: the 2027 paper is set by a new organising institute, and the wording of Bioreaction Engineering still names diffusion effects, the Thiele modulus, the effectiveness factor and Michaelis-Menten and inhibition kinetics. We cannot tell you whether the 2027 paper will respect the syllabus line exactly, and neither can anyone else before the paper is held.
Our count of the official papers and keys, 85 subject marks a paper. The amber bar is the three headings removed in 2027.
The smaller changes, with the real text
Engineering Mathematics
- Added: "Multivariable calculus (limits, continuity, and differentiability)" and "Gradient, divergence, and curl (for applications in fluid mechanics, transport processes, etc.)" under Calculus. The syllabus still mentions transport processes here although that heading is gone elsewhere.
- Added: "Bayesian Statistics" in Probability and Statistics.
- Unchanged: matrices, eigenvalues, ODEs with Laplace transforms, mean and median, Poisson, normal and binomial distributions, regression, numerical solution of equations, trapezoidal and Simpson's rule.
General Biology
- Biochemistry: adds "detailed pathways like glycolysis, citric acid cycle, and fatty acid oxidation" alongside regulation of metabolism. The 2027 text repeats the regulation line, which looks like an editing slip rather than a new topic.
- Microbiology added: history of microbiology; bacterial cell wall composition, Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, Archaea; lac, trp and ara operons; two-component systems; bacterial communication. Dropped: microbial ecology (marine, fresh water and terrestrial) and microbial interactions. A 2024 question on syntrophism is now outside the syllabus.
- Immunology rewritten: innate immunity and inflammation, cytokines and chemokines, effector responses, memory responses and immunodeficiency are now named. "Antigen-antibody reaction" and the stand-alone "adaptive immunity" line are not. Complement, MHC, antigen processing, tolerance, hypersensitivity, autoimmunity and vaccines stay.
Genetics, Cell and Molecular Biology
- Added: bacterial gene mapping; sex determination; non-cell autonomous cell signalling.
- Cell biology now says "Eukaryotic cell structure"; "prokaryotic" is gone. Molecular biology is word-for-word the same.
Fundamentals of Biological Engineering (the 2027 section 4)
- Bioreaction Engineering gains longer wording: more advanced kinetic models including Michaelis-Menten kinetics and inhibition kinetics for enzyme reactions; design and operation of microbial and enzyme reactors; case studies of large-scale production of antibiotics and biofuels.
- Upstream and Downstream Processing keeps media, sterilization, filtration, centrifugation, cell disruption, chromatography, extraction, adsorption and drying. The separate "Instrumentation and Process Control" heading is gone but its content survives here: measurement devices, valves, first and second order systems, feedback and feed forward control, P, I and D controllers, tuning. In the past five papers control gave 2, 2, 1, 4 and 3 marks.
Biotechnology and tools
- Plants: adds cell fate transition and direct and indirect organogenesis. Animals and microbes are unchanged.
- Recombinant DNA: adds recombination-based gene cloning. Molecular tools: "DNA/RNA labelling and sequencing" becomes "Sangers and next generation sequencing"; adds DNA-protein and protein-protein interaction tools and genomics and proteomics-based approaches; "gene transfer technologies" is dropped from this list, though plant gene transfer stays under Plants.
- Analytical and computational tools are essentially unchanged: microscopy, spectroscopy, electrophoresis, microarrays, immunoassays, flow cytometry, whole genome and ChIP sequencing, sequence and structure databases, alignment, phylogeny, gene prediction, metagenomics, metabolic engineering and systems biology.

A week-by-week plan to the first exam day (ours)
This plan is ours, not an official schedule. It starts on Monday 5 October 2026 and runs 18 weeks to Saturday 6 February 2027, the first of six possible exam days; the BT date had not been announced when we checked. If BT falls later in February you gain up to two weeks for revision. The study hours follow the average marks of the past five papers, with the three removed headings given two evenings rather than a block.
| Weeks (2026-27) | Study focus | Paper work |
|---|---|---|
| 1: 5 to 11 Oct | Read the 2027 syllabus; set up the tracker; take two topic quizzes to find gaps | - |
| 2 to 3: 12 to 25 Oct | Engineering Mathematics: linear algebra, calculus, differential equations, probability, numerical methods | Solve the mathematics questions of all five papers |
| 4 to 6: 26 Oct to 15 Nov | General Biology: biochemistry and enzymes, microbiology, immunology | By-topic questions from the five papers |
| 7 to 9: 16 Nov to 6 Dec | Genetics, cell and molecular biology | Week 9 weekend: timed 2022 paper, self-marked |
| 10 to 12: 7 to 27 Dec | Fundamentals of Biological Engineering: bioreaction, upstream and downstream, control; two evenings on degree of reduction, kLa and heat exchangers | Week 11: timed 2023 paper; week 12: timed 2024 paper |
| 13: 28 Dec to 3 Jan | Plant, animal and microbial biotechnology | By-topic questions |
| 14: 4 to 10 Jan | Recombinant DNA and tools; the newly named sequencing and interaction tools | Sequence-analysis questions from all papers |
| 15 to 17: 11 to 31 Jan | Rework your three weakest sections from the error log | Week 16: timed 2025 paper |
| 18: 1 to 6 Feb | Formula sheet, quizzes on weak topics, rest the last two days | Week 18: the 2026 paper as dress rehearsal |
How many study hours until the exam?
Choose your likely exam day and how many hours a week you can study. The planner counts the weeks left from today and splits your total hours across the paper.
The split is ours: the first six shares follow the past five papers' average marks, scaled down to leave 12% for timed papers and review. If the planner does not load, work from the week table above.
What to do about the removed topics
- Do not delete them from your notes. A candidate who drops thermodynamics and kLa and then meets a question on them loses marks the paper-setter may still award. Keep a one-page sheet: degree of reduction and growth stoichiometry, Gibbs energy and equilibrium constant, oxygen transfer rate, Reynolds number and power number, LMTD.
- Do finish the named topics first. Bioreaction kinetics, chemostat and fed-batch balances, sterilization kinetics, chromatography, control and the enzyme-kinetics questions together supplied more marks than the three removed headings.
- Use older papers selectively. The question index in our weightage guide marks every question by subsection, so you can skip or defer the ones on removed headings.
Practise it, don't just read it
Quizzes on enzyme kinetics, Monod growth, Mendelian inheritance, flux balance and the four tools topics fit weeks 4 to 14 of the plan.
The ProSyllabus GATE BT library has nine topic quizzes of ten questions each: Michaelis Menten Enzyme Kinetics Fundamentals, Mendelian Inheritance Patterns Fundamentals, Monod Microbial Growth Model Fundamentals, Oxygen Transfer in Bioreactors Advanced Challenge, Metabolic Flux Balance Analysis Advanced Challenge, and the Molecular Tools, Analytical Tools, Computational Tools and Recombinant DNA Technology practice quizzes. Note that oxygen transfer (kLa) sits under the Transport Processes heading of the 2026 syllabus, which the 2027 syllabus no longer lists; the other eight map onto topics that are still named.
Frequently asked questions
What changed in the GATE 2027 Biotechnology syllabus?
Comparing the official 2026 and 2027 syllabus PDFs, the 2027 syllabus has six sections instead of seven; the headings Engineering Principles Applied to Biological Systems, Classical Thermodynamics and Bioenergetics and Transport Processes are no longer named; and small additions appear in mathematics, microbiology, immunology, genetics, bioreaction engineering, plants and molecular tools.
Were CRISPR-Cas and bioinformatics added to GATE BT in 2027?
No. CRISPR-Cas, bioinformatics resources, a full immunology list, epigenetics and systems biology were already in the 2026 BT syllabus. What is new is explicit wording about next generation sequencing, interaction tools and genomics and proteomics approaches.
Is thermodynamics removed from GATE BT 2027?
Classical Thermodynamics and Bioenergetics is not named in the 2027 BT syllabus, and neither is material and energy balances or transport processes. The Information Brochure is silent on how the paper will treat questions in those areas, so treat them as lower priority rather than zero.
How many weeks are left for GATE 2027?
On 5 October 2026 there are 18 weeks to Saturday 6 February 2027, the first of the six exam days. The BT paper date and session were not announced when we checked.
Does the GATE 2027 BT paper pattern change?
No. The paper has 65 questions for 100 marks in three hours, General Aptitude carries 15 marks and the subject part 85 marks, of which Engineering Mathematics carries 13, according to the GATE 2027 Information Brochure. MCQs carry negative marking; MSQ and NAT questions do not.
