GATE BT Qualifying Marks 2023–2026 by Category: Official Table

Checked 3 October 2026. Every figure is from the organising institutes' own statistical reports for 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026 and will not change. GATE 2027 qualifying marks do not exist until the result on 19 March 2027. No official BT report was available to us for 2022 or earlier.

The GATE Biotechnology (BT) qualifying mark for the General category was 25.8 out of 100 in 2026, 23.2 for OBC-NCL and EWS, and 17.2 for SC, ST and PwD candidates. Of 21,513 candidates who appeared, 4,124 qualified (19.2%). The mark was 28.0 in 2025, 38.9 in 2024 and 31.6 in 2023.

Those four numbers are the whole story of BT qualifying marks, and almost every page that publishes them mixes them up with the marks a candidate needs for an IIT or IISc seat. They are different things. This guide gives the official figures for all four years, with the category-wise counts, the marks distribution behind each qualifying mark, and a checker that tells you what your own marks would have been in each year.

Where other pages get this wrong

The 2026 General qualifying mark for BT was 25.8, not 28 to 33.

Commonly published instead: Pages published before the result that "expect" 28.0 to 30.5, or 31.0 to 33.5, for 2026 (including two older pages on this site), and then keep the expected figure on the page after the result.

The official GATE 2026 report prints 25.8 / 23.2 / 17.2 for BT. The 2025 and 2024 figures those pages quote (28.0 and 38.9) are correct; 2026 simply came out lower than any of them predicted because the paper was harder and the average mark fell to 15.67.

2023 (IIT Kanpur)31.628.421300 / 1842,999 of 14,097

Marks are out of 100. The General qualifying mark is always converted to a GATE score of 350; the other two categories get lower scores because their qualifying marks are lower. A qualifying score only makes your scorecard valid. It does not place you in any institute.

Official statistical reports. The three lines move together because the OBC-NCL/EWS mark is 9/10 and the SC/ST/PwD mark is 2/3 of the General mark.

The line is not a trend you can extrapolate. It jumped by seven marks in 2024, when the average mark rose to 25.71, and then fell by more than twelve marks in two years. The qualifying mark follows the average mark of that year's field and paper, not a fixed target, which is why the 2027 value cannot be predicted from these four points.

Where the number comes from

The official rule, from the GATE 2027 Information Brochure

  • General qualifying mark = max(25, min(40, μ + σ)), where μ is the mean and σ the standard deviation of the marks of all candidates who appeared in the paper.
  • OBC-NCL / EWS = 9/10 of the General mark. SC / ST / PwD = 2/3 of the General mark.
  • So the qualifying mark can never be below 25 or above 40 for any paper. BT touched neither limit in these four years; 2026 came within 0.8 of the floor.

Source: GATE 2027 Information Brochure, section 8.1. The reports print the marks to one decimal, truncated rather than rounded.

YearMean marks (μ)Std deviation (σ)μ + σ (our arithmetic)Printed General mark

202425.7113.2738.9838.9
202320.1511.4731.6231.6

The check works in every year: 20.15 + 11.47 = 31.62 prints as 31.6; 25.71 + 13.27 = 38.98 prints as 38.9; 18.74 + 9.26 = 28.00; 15.67 + 10.19 = 25.86 prints as 25.8. The rule has a floor of 25 and a cap of 40, and all four of these sums fall between them, so for these years a page that quotes a BT General qualifying mark different from the mean plus standard deviation of the official report, to one decimal, is wrong.

Percentages are ours, computed from the official counts. The number of candidates has risen every year, from 14,097 who appeared in 2023 to 21,513 in 2026 (up 53%), while the share who qualify has stayed between 19% and 23%. A rising field does not make qualifying harder by itself; the average mark does.

Each cell is appeared / qualified from table 3 of the official report. The five categories add up exactly to the paper totals in every year. Because each category qualifies at its own mark, the share qualifying differs by category (in 2026, 21.1% of General candidates who appeared, 18.9% of EWS, 15.3% of OBC-NCL, 22.5% of SC and 21.7% of ST; our arithmetic). The only way to compare categories fairly is by the score, not the mark.

Counts of candidates who appeared, added up by us from the official 10-mark distribution. In 2026, 71% of the field scored below 20 marks and only 561 candidates scored 40 or more; in 2024 the same 40-plus group had 2,620 candidates. That one difference explains why the 2024 qualifying mark was 38.9 and the 2026 mark 25.8.

Check your own marks against all four years

Would your marks have qualified? Check all four years

Enter marks out of 100 (after negative marking) and your category. The tool compares them with the official qualifying mark of each year and shows the GATE score those marks would have been worth that year.

Past years only; the 2027 qualifying mark is set after the exam from that year's mean and standard deviation. The same numbers are in the table above for readers without scripts.

If the checker does not load, use the first table: find your category, then compare your marks with each year's mark.

What the qualifying mark does not decide

Qualifying gives you a valid scorecard for three years from the result date. It does not give you a seat. IISc, the IITs and the NITs set their own conditions: IISc publishes a GATE-score cut-off for being called to an interview, and the NIT counselling publishes the lowest score each programme allotted. Those thresholds run from about 380 to 750 on the 1000 scale for General candidates, while the qualifying score is 350. Our guide to the admission side (linked below) sets out each published rule and what it means.

The older guide on this site, GATE Biotechnology expected cutoff, IIT/IISc admission scores and placements, carries "expected" admission ranges. Treat those as estimates; the official numbers are in our guide to M.Tech and PhD admission after GATE BT.

What we could not find

Gaps, stated plainly

  • 2022 and earlier. The GATE 2022 statistical report was published by IIT Kharagpur as a link to a private file that no longer downloads, and we found no official copy for 2021 or earlier. Careers360 printed 35.5 / 31.9 / 23.6 for BT 2022 from the IIT Kharagpur release (reported, not checked against an original); it fits the 9/10 and 2/3 rules but we leave it out of the table and the chart.
  • Normalisation. BT was a single-session paper in 2025 (Sunday 16 February, forenoon) and 2026 (Saturday 7 February, afternoon), so these marks are raw marks. If a 2027 paper is held in more than one session, marks are normalised before the score is computed.
  • 2027. The BT paper date and session had not been announced on 3 October 2026; results are due on 19 March 2027.

Practise it, don't just read it

Moving from 25 to 40 marks is fifteen marks: seven 2-mark questions and one 1-mark question. Topic quizzes show which of those you can already take.

The ProSyllabus GATE BT library has nine topic quizzes of ten questions each: Michaelis Menten Enzyme Kinetics Fundamentals, Mendelian Inheritance Patterns Fundamentals, Monod Microbial Growth Model Fundamentals, Oxygen Transfer in Bioreactors Advanced Challenge, Metabolic Flux Balance Analysis Advanced Challenge, and the Molecular Tools, Analytical Tools, Computational Tools and Recombinant DNA Technology practice quizzes. Note that oxygen transfer (kLa) sits under the Transport Processes heading of the 2026 syllabus, which the 2027 syllabus no longer lists; the other eight map onto topics that are still named.

Frequently asked questions

What was the GATE BT qualifying mark in 2026?

According to the official IIT Guwahati report, 25.8 for General, 23.2 for OBC-NCL/EWS and 17.2 for SC/ST/PwD. 4,124 of 21,513 candidates who appeared qualified.

What were the GATE BT qualifying marks in 2025, 2024 and 2023?

General 28.0, 38.9 and 31.6; OBC-NCL/EWS 25.2, 35.0 and 28.4; SC/ST/PwD 18.6, 25.9 and 21.0, from the official reports of IIT Roorkee, IISc and IIT Kanpur.

Why did the GATE BT qualifying mark fall so much in 2026?

The General qualifying mark is the mean plus one standard deviation of all candidates' marks, within a floor of 25 and a cap of 40. The average BT mark fell from 25.71 in 2024 to 18.74 in 2025 and 15.67 in 2026, so the qualifying mark fell from 38.9 to 28.0 to 25.8.

Does qualifying in GATE BT guarantee admission to an IIT or IISc?

No. The GATE organising institute says qualifying does not guarantee admission. Each institute sets its own eligibility and selection, and the scores that institutes use are far higher than the qualifying score of 350.

How long is a GATE BT score valid?

The GATE 2027 information brochure says the score stays valid for three years from the date the results are announced. The 2026 NIT counselling (CCMT) accepted scores from GATE 2024, 2025 and 2026.
