Fit India Quiz State Round: How Many Schools Each State Sends

Checked 3 October 2026. From PIB releases on the 2021 and 2022 State rounds, the 2021 and 2023 guidelines and the Sikkim government note on 2023. No consolidated 2023 State list was published; later editions have not been announced.

After the preliminary round, the Fit India Quiz becomes a contest between schools. Each State and Union Territory sends a fixed number of schools, each represented by a team of two students, to a State round hosted online by a professional quiz master and streamed. The winner of each of the 36 State rounds goes to the national round. This guide shows, State by State, how many teams took part in the 2022 State rounds, how many rounds each State needed, who won, and which 2021 champions won again.

Status on 3 October 2026

The last Fit India Quiz we can find is the 2023 edition (the third): its preliminary round ran on 21–22 December 2023 and its State rounds on 26 March – 10 April 2024. No 2024, 2025 or 2026 edition has been announced. The official quiz page still shows the 2023 text, the NTA registration portal does not respond, and National Sports Day 2026 (28–30 August) ran without the quiz. Any “2026 dates” you see elsewhere are guesses.

How places are shared out

Places in the State round are allocated by a slab: the more schools from a State take part in the prelim, the more of them go through. Within a State, the merit list is walked from the top and each place goes to the school of the next student, skipping schools that already have a place. The 2023 rule is the latest official version.

Schools from the State taking partSchools qualifying (2023 rule)Schools qualifying (2021 rule)

501–1,000816 (slab 501–2,500)
1,001–5,0001624 (slab 2,501–5,000)
More than 5,0003232

Official 2021 and 2023 guidelines. The 2022 slab was never published, but every 2022 State had 4, 8, 16 or 32 teams, which fits the 2023 numbers (our inference).

Every State in 2022: teams, rounds and champion

PIB Mumbai published a table on 23 July 2023 listing, for each State and UT, the number of teams in its State round, the number of rounds played and the champion school. It is reproduced below without the students’ names. The team counts add up to 348 and the rounds to 120, matching the totals PIB gave in June 2023.

Uttar Pradesh stands out because it also had by far the most participants: in the 2022 prelim, 20,470 students from 5,368 schools in UP took part, the most of any State, followed by Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh (SAI, 15 February 2023). A few team counts look odd against the slab. Himachal Pradesh sent 16 teams while Karnataka and Tamil Nadu sent 8; the count depends only on how many schools took part in the prelim, not on the size of the State. And Sikkim sent 8 teams in 2022 but only 4 in 2023, when just 11 of its schools took part.

Your State in the 2022 State round

2022 teams, rounds and champions: PIB Mumbai, 23 July 2023. 2021 champions: PIB, 4 April 2022 (only the States listed in this guide’s 2021 table are shown). The number of places depends on how many schools from the State take part, so it can change from edition to edition.

Schools that won their State twice

PIB published the 2021 State champions on 4 April 2022. Comparing that list with the 2022 table, six schools won their State in both editions: that is our comparison of the two official lists. It is a strong hint that the State round rewards schools that prepare as a team year after year.

Government schools do well in the State round. Twelve of the 36 State champions in 2022 were government schools (PIB, 23 July 2023), and several of them are in the table above: Kendriya Vidyalayas in Arunachal, Assam, Bihar, Mizoram, Punjab, Rajasthan and West Bengal, and government schools in Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Lakshadweep and Sikkim. For the 2021 edition the Fit India page says 40% of the schools in the national round were government schools.

What happens in a State round

The State rounds are not a written test. The 2021 guidelines describe a quiz on a web platform, anchored by a professional quiz master and webcast, with between 3 and 11 rounds per State depending on how many teams qualified, and with questions on local sport. The 2023 guidelines say only that the “modalities will be finalized”, and list audio-visual and image-based questions, buzzer rounds and a physical challenge. The 2021 guidelines also mention a “phone a teacher or parent” concept.

In practice, the 2022 State rounds became a web series: 84 episodes were streamed on YouTube and Facebook from 10 June 2023, and the State finals were shown on Doordarshan (PIB, 7 June 2023). The 2023 State rounds were held from 26 March to 10 April 2024 with 256 schools, and 92 episodes were put on YouTube from 18 June 2024 (SAI; the episode count is reported by NKTV).

Sikkim 2023: the one official State result for the last edition

No consolidated list of 2023 State champions was ever published. The one official State result we found is a Sikkim government press note of 31 July 2024. Eleven Sikkim schools took part in the prelim and four went through, exactly what the 2023 slab gives a State with 0–500 schools. The Sikkim champion was Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Pakyong, and the note said the national finals were “scheduled in Delhi”. We found no record that they took place. An NKTV report names Army Public School, Tezpur as the Assam champion; that is reported, not official.

Where other pages get this wrong

No official list of “top 10 schools” in the Fit India Quiz exists, and there was no 2024 edition.

Commonly published instead: An older news page on this site describes a “FIT India Quiz 2024” held on 28 December with 10,000+ schools, and a top-10 list including The Doon School and Mayo College.

The last prelim was 21–22 December 2023. Official lists are by State, one champion per State; neither Doon nor Mayo appears in any official list we read. Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram was Delhi’s champion in 2021 only.
