Checked 3 October 2026. From the 2021 and 2023 guidelines, SAI’s prize-sponsorship EOI of 24 July 2024 and PIB releases. The same table has been used since 2021; a new edition could change it.
The Fit India Quiz has one of the largest prize pools of any school quiz in India: ₹3.25 crore per edition in both the 2021 and 2023 guidelines. Most of the money goes to schools, and the rules tie it to sport: the 2021 guidelines say the cash “may be utilized only for promotion of sports and fitness”. Students win smaller amounts that are paid to the team of two, not to each student. This guide goes through every line of the table, adds up what a school can take home at each stage, and shows where published figures disagree.
Status on 3 October 2026
The last Fit India Quiz we can find is the 2023 edition (the third): its preliminary round ran on 21–22 December 2023 and its State rounds on 26 March – 10 April 2024. No 2024, 2025 or 2026 edition has been announced. The official quiz page still shows the 2023 text, the NTA registration portal does not respond, and National Sports Day 2026 (28–30 August) ran without the quiz. Any “2026 dates” you see elsewhere are guesses.

The official prize table
The table is the same in the 2021 and the 2023 guidelines. “Students” means the team of two; the guidelines mark the student column as awarded to a team of 2 students. The per-student column is our arithmetic if a team splits its prize equally, which the rules do not require.
| Level | School (₹) | Student team of 2 (₹) | Each student if split equally (our arithmetic, ₹) |
|---|---|---|---|
| National champion | 25,00,000 | 2,50,000 | 1,25,000 |
| National 1st runner-up | 15,00,000 | 1,50,000 | 75,000 |
| National 2nd runner-up | 10,00,000 | 1,00,000 | 50,000 |
| State/UT champion (36) | 2,50,000 | 25,000 | 12,500 |
| State/UT 1st runner-up (36) | 1,00,000 | 10,000 | 5,000 |
| State/UT 2nd runner-up (36) | 50,000 | 5,000 | 2,500 |
| Every school in the State round | 15,000 | 2,000 | 1,000 |
| Other (see below) | 9,69,000 | — | — |
| Total | 3,25,00,000 |
Sources: 2021 and 2023 guidelines; PIB, 22 July 2022 and 10 August 2023 for the national student prizes.
The ₹9,69,000 line changed meaning between editions. In the 2021 guidelines it is “cash prizes to teachers, principals and parents”. In the 2023 guidelines the same amount is for “trophies, medals & certificates”. Every student who takes part receives a participation certificate, and the 2023 rules add recognition for the school with the most participation in each State.
Adding it up: what a school takes home
A school that goes further also keeps the prizes for the stages it passed through, if the prizes add up. The Sikkim government note on the 2023 State champion lists the ₹15,000 qualifier award as going to all schools in the State round, which implies that the champion also gets it, but no rulebook says so in so many words. The table below is our arithmetic on that assumption.
| Furthest stage reached | School total (our arithmetic) | Student team total (our arithmetic) | Each student if split equally (our arithmetic) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Qualified for the State round only | ₹15,000 | ₹2,000 | ₹1,000 |
| State/UT 2nd runner-up | ₹65,000 | ₹7,000 | ₹3,500 |
| State/UT 1st runner-up | ₹1,15,000 | ₹12,000 | ₹6,000 |
| State/UT champion (national round, not on the podium) | ₹2,65,000 | ₹27,000 | ₹13,500 |
| National 2nd runner-up | ₹12,65,000 | ₹1,27,000 | ₹63,500 |
| National 1st runner-up | ₹17,65,000 | ₹1,77,000 | ₹88,500 |
| National champion | ₹27,65,000 | ₹2,77,000 | ₹1,38,500 |
What could a school and its team take home?
Our arithmetic on the official prize table, assuming a school keeps each stage’s prize as it moves up (the Sikkim government note implies this but no rulebook states it). Student prizes are for the team of two; the rules do not say how the team divides them.
Where the ₹3.25 crore goes
The guidelines give the total but not the number of qualifying schools it assumes. Working backwards is revealing. The national podium costs ₹55 lakh. Each State podium costs ₹4.4 lakh, so 36 of them cost ₹158.4 lakh. The trophies line is ₹9.69 lakh. What is left, about ₹101.9 lakh, pays for the ₹17,000 qualifier awards (₹15,000 to the school and ₹2,000 to the team): enough for about 599 schools. All of this is our arithmetic.
| Block | Calculation (our arithmetic) | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| National podium (3 schools and 3 teams) | (25 + 15 + 10) lakh + (2.5 + 1.5 + 1) lakh | ₹55 lakh |
| State podiums (36 States × 3 places) | 36 × (4 lakh + 0.4 lakh) = 36 × 4.4 lakh | ₹158.4 lakh |
| Trophies, medals and certificates (2023 wording) | as listed | ₹9.69 lakh |
| Left for qualifier awards | 325 − 55 − 158.4 − 9.69 | ₹101.91 lakh |
| Qualifier awards that pays for | 101.91 lakh ÷ ₹17,000 | about 599 schools |
Our arithmetic on the official prize table.
Does that fit what was actually paid? For the 2022 edition, PIB said the Fit India Quiz “gives away over Rs 2 Crore” at the State stage. With 348 schools in the 2022 State rounds, the State podiums (₹158.4 lakh) plus 348 qualifier awards of ₹17,000 (₹59.16 lakh) come to ₹217.56 lakh, which is indeed just over ₹2 crore. The numbers hang together.
| Check against 2022 (our arithmetic) | Amount |
|---|---|
| State podiums | ₹158.4 lakh |
| 348 qualifier awards × ₹17,000 | ₹59.16 lakh |
| State-stage total | ₹217.56 lakh |
| PIB, 23 July 2023 | “over Rs 2 Crore” |
Figures that disagree
Several published figures do not match the rulebook. We print both sides and say which we use.
| Claim | Who says it | Official figure | We use |
|---|---|---|---|
| National champion students win ₹5 lakh | NKTV, June 2024 (reported) | ₹2.5 lakh for the team (guidelines; PIB, 10.08.2023) | ₹2.5 lakh |
| State champion students win ₹25,000 each | NKTV (reported) | ₹25,000 for the team (guidelines; PIB, 23.07.2023) | ₹25,000 per team |
| Sikkim 2023 champion won “Rs.3 Lacs” | Sikkim government note, headline | Same note’s body: ₹2,50,000 to the school and ₹25,000 to the team = ₹2.75 lakh | The itemised figures |
| State champion prize described as ₹2.75 lakh | PIB on the 2021 State finals | ₹2.5 lakh school + ₹25,000 team | Consistent: the two added together |
| ₹9,69,000 is for teachers, principals and parents | 2021 guidelines | 2023 guidelines: trophies, medals and certificates | Both, by edition |
With the ₹17,000 qualifier award added, the Sikkim champion’s total would be ₹2.92 lakh (our arithmetic), which is still not ₹3 lakh; the headline looks like rounding.
| Sikkim 2023 champion, itemised (our arithmetic) | Amount |
|---|---|
| School prize | ₹2,50,000 |
| Team prize | ₹25,000 |
| Qualifier awards (₹15,000 + ₹2,000) | ₹17,000 |
| Total | ₹2,92,000 |
Where other pages get this wrong
A State champion school wins ₹2.5 lakh; ₹1 lakh is the 1st runner-up’s prize, not the bottom of a range.
Commonly published instead: An older guide on this site says State champions receive “₹1 lakh to ₹2.5 lakh”.
The official table gives ₹2,50,000 to the State champion school, ₹1,00,000 to the 1st runner-up and ₹50,000 to the 2nd runner-up, plus ₹15,000 to every qualifying school and separate team prizes for students.
Was the 2023 prize money paid?
We could not confirm it. On 24 July 2024, more than three months after the 2023 State rounds ended, SAI published an expression of interest seeking a sponsor for the ₹3.25 crore prize money of Fit India Quiz 2023. On 1 August 2024 it sought an OTT partner to broadcast the State and national rounds, describing a “combined audience of 22 million viewers” for the first two editions. The Sikkim note of 31 July 2024 announces the State prizes. We found no record of the 2023 national final or of the national prizes being awarded.

| 24.07.2024 | SAI EOI: sponsor the prize money of Fit India Quiz 2023 | ₹3.25 crore |

How the money is paid
The 2023 rules ask a qualifying school to enter its own bank details and the students’ on the Fit India website, so the school prize and the student prize reach separate accounts. Schools also carry duties that cost money: they must run a fair internal selection, pay the registration fee and arrange travel for their team where a round is held in person. The prize table is therefore partly a return on that outlay, and the 2021 rule that school prize money go to sport and fitness makes it a sports budget rather than a windfall.
| Registration fee per student | Amount | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 2021 | ₹250 (waived for the first 2 lakh students from the first 1 lakh schools, at most 2 per school) | Guidelines; PIB, 14.09.2021 |
| 2022 | ₹50 | Nagaland government, 18.11.2022 |
| 2023 | ₹100 (refunded to government schools for students who appeared, reported) | Guidelines; Khel Today (reported) |
Taking the 2023 fee, a school that entered 10 students paid ₹1,000; the ₹15,000 qualifier award alone repays that fifteen times over (our arithmetic). The catch is the odds: in 2022 about 2.1% of participating schools reached the State round, as our prelim guide explains.
| Example (our arithmetic) | Amount |
|---|---|
| 10 students at the 2023 fee | ₹1,000 |
| Qualifier award to the school | ₹15,000 |
| Schools reaching the State round in 2022 | 2.1% |
