Alerts and Updates for GATE Biomedical Engineering

IIT Madras is the organizing institute for GATE 2027 and released the official notification and brochure on 20 July 2026 at gate2027.iitm.ac.in. The exam, covering 30 papers including Biomedical Engineering (BM), will be a computer-based test held on 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027.

GATE 2027 registration, originally planned for 14 August 2026, was postponed; the GOAPS application portal opened on 27 August 2026 and is open now. Regular registration (no late fee) closes 27 September 2026, with an extended late-fee window until 5 October 2026.

IIT Madras has revised the GATE syllabus across papers for the first time in five years as part of GATE 2027 and added a new Robotics and Automation (RA) paper. BM covers Engineering Mathematics, Electrical Circuits, Bioinstrumentation, Medical Imaging, Biomechanics and Human Physiology; candidates should check the current BM syllabus PDF on the official portal.

The specific date and session (forenoon or afternoon) for the BM paper within the six exam days has not been announced yet; IIT Madras will assign each of the 30 papers a slot, confirmed only when admit cards are released, expected around early January 2027.

The GATE 2027 notification has not been released yet. IIT Madras is widely reported as the organising institute for GATE 2027 under the IIT-IISc rotation, but this is still described as expected rather than officially confirmed, and the official brochure and portal are projected to go live in the last week of July or in August 2026.

As per the tentative calendar being reported, GATE 2027 registration is expected to open around August 24, 2026, with a normal deadline near September 29 and an extended late-fee window to October 13, 2026. The exam is tentatively listed for February 6, 7, 13 and 14, 2027, with results expected in March 2027.

Biomedical Engineering (BM) continues as one of the 30 GATE papers. Its syllabus centres on Anatomy and Physiology, Biomechanics, Biomedical Materials, Medical Instrumentation and Biomedical Imaging, alongside Engineering Mathematics and General Aptitude. The official 2027 syllabus is still awaited and arrives with the brochure.

The BM paper follows the standard GATE structure: 65 questions for 100 marks in 180 minutes, with General Aptitude worth 15 marks and the rest split between Engineering Mathematics and the biomedical core. Candidates may also opt for a second paper from the permitted two-paper combinations.

For the current cycle, IIT Guwahati issued GATE 2026 scorecards from March 27, 2026; free download ran to May 31, 2026 and a paid download at Rs 500 is available till December 31, 2026. A GATE score is valid for three years, so a GATE 2026 BM score stays usable while you prepare for 2027.
