CII Exams Explained: Units, Booking, Remote Invigilation, Cost and Results

Checked 5 November 2026. Exam rules, dates, fees, pass marks and pass rates were read on cii.co.uk and in the CII’s Qualification and Assessment rules (June 2026) on 5 November 2026. CII prices and dates change; check the unit page and the Important exam deadlines page before you book.

R01 to R05 and the IF units of the Certificate in Insurance are on-screen multiple-choice (MCQ) exams with no fixed dates: you buy a unit, then book your own date in MyCII and sit it at a PSI test centre or by remote invigilation from a private room of your choice. The CII says MCQ exams “are available daily (subject to availability)”. Your result appears on screen at the end and in MyCII normally within two working days. Written units, such as R06, are the exception: they run on set dates a few times a year. A UK non-member pays £334 for R01 with the digital study text and one exam entry, and £200 for an Assessment only entry (exam entry, no study material), which in our reading is the option for a resit when you no longer need the study text. This guide covers how the exams run, the units and their pass marks, booking, remote invigilation, cost, results and resits. ProSyllabus is an independent study site. It is not affiliated with the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII), and nothing here is official. Every date, fee, rule and exam fact below is taken from the CII’s own pages and documents, read on 5 November 2026 unless another date is given; where we add our own reading or suggestion, we say so.

How CII exams work

The CII’s assessment information page says its qualifications involve completing one or more units, each an individually assessed topic, and describes MCQ exams, written exams, coursework and mixed assessment (one coursework assignment plus an MCQ exam); its Results information page also covers dissertations. The R0 units R01 to R05 and the Certificate in Insurance units IF1 to IF9 are all MCQ exams; R06 is a written exam.

For an MCQ unit there is no sitting to register for. You buy the unit in the CII unit shop, and on the R01 page every purchase option includes an assessment entry: Enrolment only and Enrolment plus give 12 months of access to the study material and an exam voucher “valid for 18 months” from purchase; Assessment only is the entry without study material. Check your own unit’s purchase terms. You then book an available date yourself, in advance. For MCQ exams the CII’s assessment rules say you can only book a date “more than two days ahead of the current date, subject to availability”, and not beyond your enrolment period.

Under its MCQ heading, the assessment information page says study is based on set yearly periods: 1 January to 31 December for general insurance units, 1 September to 31 August for personal finance units, and 1 May to 30 April for mixed assessment and non-UK units. These yearly periods are not your own access or voucher dates: on the R01 page, study material access runs 12 months from enrolment and the exam voucher 18 months from purchase. The R01 examination guide is dated “for exams from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2027”. The CII’s assessment rules point you to each unit’s syllabus and the updates on its unit page for what is tested and when legislative changes are assessed, so check those dates for your own unit, especially where tax or legislative changes affect it.

Worked example 1: which R01 syllabus applies to your date?

Worked example 1 · syllabus edition

You plan to sit R01 either on 20 August 2027 or on 3 September 2027. Which syllabus and examination guide apply?

  1. R01 is a personal finance unit, so its year runs from 1 September to 31 August.
  2. The current R01 examination guide is “for exams from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2027”. 20 August 2027 falls inside it.
  3. 3 September 2027 falls in the next year, which starts on 1 September 2027, so it would be examined on the 2027/28 edition.

20 August 2027: the 2026/27 R01 syllabus. 3 September 2027: the 2027/28 one. Our suggestion: if you study the 2026/27 text, aim to sit before 1 September 2027, or switch to the new edition when it is released, and check the syllabus and updates for your exam date.

Yearly periods from the CII’s Assessment information page (read 5 November 2026); edition dates from the R01 examination guide (saved 25 October 2026). The R01 page says enrolled learners automatically receive a new edition on RevisionMate if it is released during their 12 months of access.

CII exam dates

For MCQ units there are no CII exam dates to wait for. The Important exam deadlines page says MCQ exams “are available daily (subject to availability)”, booked through your MyCII dashboard. In our reading, that means you choose the day when you are ready, within your enrolment period, rather than plan around a sitting.

Written exams, which include R06 and units such as AF1, AF4, AF5, AF7, J02, J05 and J07, have fixed dates. These are the R06 Financial planning practice sittings the CII has confirmed for 2027:

Tuesday 5 October 2027Monday 20 September 2027Friday 12 November 2027

From the CII’s Important exam deadlines page, read 5 November 2026. The page showed “Available to book from” as TBC for every 2027 sitting. The 2026 R06 sitting on 6 October 2026 has its results released on Friday 13 November 2026.

R06 is different in another way too: its page describes a three-hour exam of two written case studies, and candidates receive the case studies two weeks before the sitting.

All R0 and IF units: format and pass marks

These are the six R0 units and the nine IF units with the exam each unit page describes. “Standard format” MCQs have four options and one correct answer; a “multiple response” question has four to six options with more than one correct, and you must pick all of them to gain the mark. Unit names link to our format guide where we have one.

Each unit page states “The 2025 pass rate for this unit was …”, read 5 November 2026. These are the CII’s published 2025 pass rates; they do not predict your own result. Pass rates for the IF units are in the table above.

Two things in that table catch people out. R05’s unit page gives a standard pass mark of 70%, while R01 to R04 give 65%, though all five are core units of the Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning. And R03 Personal taxation had the lowest 2025 pass rate of the R0 units, 59.61%. The Results information page sets the standard pass marks by type: 70% for Certificate and Award MCQ units, 65% for Diploma MCQ units, and 55% for Diploma and Advanced Diploma written units, except AF7 at 60%.

How to book a CII exam

All exam bookings must start on the CII website. For an MCQ exam, first buy the unit (any enrolment option, or Assessment only), which puts an exam voucher in your account; the CII’s remote invigilation guide then gives these steps:

  1. Log in to your MyCII dashboard and go to “Booking and results”.
  2. Click “view unit” on the exam voucher for the unit you want to sit.
  3. Click “Book exam”. You are sent to the PSI platform.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to book your date and time. For a remote exam you can upload photo ID now or at check-in on the day.
  5. Look for the confirmation email: for a remote exam it holds the link you use on the day.

Steps from the CII’s guide to remote invigilation for MCQ exams. A test-centre exam is also booked from MyCII: the CII’s Exam venues page says all bookings must be initiated from the CII website. The CII’s Exam booking guidance page has short videos for booking at a test centre, booking a remote exam and amending a booking. Booking rules from the Qualification and Assessment rules, June 2026.

For written exams such as R06, use the CII’s booking guidance and the closing dates on the Important exam deadlines page instead. For MCQ exams, two rules decide your earliest and latest dates: an MCQ exam must be booked more than two days ahead, and it cannot be after the end of your enrolment period. If you need help, the guide points you to CII Customer Service’s web chat.

Remote invigilation or a test centre?

The CII describes remote invigilation as the option “to sit multiple choice exams online in a suitable location of the candidate’s choice, using a PC or laptop with access to a webcam, instead of at a test centre.” The exam itself is the same; the rules around it differ.

If something goes wrongAsk the invigilator; if the delay is too long the exam may need to be rescheduled. The CII is not liable for faults with your own equipment or internet.Tell the invigilator at once and ask for an incident report.

From the CII’s Qualification and Assessment rules (June 2026), its guide to remote invigilation for MCQ exams, and its About your exam pages for remote and test-centre MCQ exams, read 5 November 2026. For either route, apply for special consideration to online.exams@cii.co.uk within five working days of the exam.

In our reading, remote invigilation suits you if you have a quiet room you can clear and a reliable wired or strong Wi-Fi connection; the CII’s guide recommends an internet speed test before you book and on the exam day itself, and a system compatibility check before you book and again at least 48 hours before the exam. A test centre suits you if your home set-up is shared, unreliable, or only a tablet or Chromebook.

How much a CII exam costs

The exam entry is bought with the unit. For R01, Enrolment only (study text plus assessment entry) and Enrolment plus (adds revision aids such as the Knowledge Checker) include an assessment entry; Assessment only is an entry that, in the R01 page’s words, “does not include access to any study material”, which in our reading is the natural way to pay for a resit. Check the package contents for your own unit. On the R01 page, study material access lasts 12 months from enrolment and the exam voucher 18 months from purchase. These are the UK prices of each purchase option in the CII unit shop, read on 5 November 2026. For the Certificate in Insurance units and what membership saves, see our Cert CII guide.

UnitEnrolment only, digitalEnrolment plus, digitalAssessment only (exam entry, no study material)

R05£242 (member £200)£346.25 (member £289.18)£159 (member £134)
R06£334 (member £234)£398.08 (member £295.15)£200 (member £146)
IF1£359 (member £274)£371.78 (member £281.03)Not listed on 5 November 2026

Non-member prices first, member prices in brackets; from the purchase options each CII unit page loads, read 5 November 2026. Digital and print Enrolment only cost £359 (member £254) for R01-R04 and R06, £260 (£213) for R05 and £399 (£301) for IF1. We read the UK English prices only.

Worked example 2: what failing R01 once costs

Worked example 2 · resit cost

A non-member buys R01 Enrolment only (digital), fails the first attempt and resits. What do the two attempts cost the CII way, and what if they had bought the unit again?

  1. First attempt: Enrolment only, digital = £334.
  2. Resit: Assessment only, £200. Total for two attempts: £334 + £200 = £534.
  3. Buying Enrolment only a second time instead: 2 × £334 = £668.

£534 for two attempts, £134 less than buying the unit twice. At member prices the same two attempts cost £234 + £146 = £380. Your study text access runs for 12 months from enrolment, so a resit inside that year needs only the Assessment only entry, in our reading.

Prices from the CII R01 unit page purchase options, UK, read 5 November 2026. Arithmetic ours. If your resit falls in a new syllabus year, the exam follows the new edition.

CII exam results

For on-screen MCQ exams, the CII’s remote invigilation guide says results “will be shown on the screen at the end of the examination”, and the Results information page says they “will normally be available on MyCII within 2 UK business working days”. MyCII shows your score and the percentage of marks you gained on each learning outcome; the CII warns that you cannot work out your score by averaging those percentages, because learning outcomes are weighted. Results are never sent by post, phone or email.

AssessmentWhen you get the resultRecord of achievement
On-screen MCQ exam (R01-R05, IF units)On screen at the end; in MyCII normally within 2 UK business working daysFor a pass: usually within 4 UK business working days of taking the exam
Written exam (R06, AF units)Typically by 09:00 UK time on the published release dateFor a pass in an on-screen written exam: on the results release date
Coursework / dissertationNormally within 63 / 73 calendar days of submissionFor a pass: usually within 4 UK business working days of the result

From the CII’s Results information page and guide to remote invigilation, read 5 November 2026. A qualification certificate is typically in MyCII by the end of two calendar weeks after the unit pass (or prior learning award) that completes the qualification has been applied to your record, and in some cases it takes up to 30 days.

A pass is about the standard, not a quota: the CII says it “does not operate a policy of setting a quota of candidates who will be passed.” Each correct MCQ answer earns one mark, and wrong answers lose nothing. Exam versions can differ slightly in difficulty, and the CII’s “Understanding your exam result” (read 25 October 2026) explains that for MCQ exams it works out in advance, and applies where necessary, an adjustment to the marks for each version, up or down, so the same pass standard holds. That is why the raw mark you need can differ slightly from the standard pass mark.

Resits, re-checks and appeals

If you fail an MCQ unit, in our reading you resit by buying an Assessment only entry for that unit and booking a new date in the usual way. The pages we read set no waiting period between attempts, but the more-than-two-days booking rule still applies. MCQ exams are marked by computer with a pre-set pass mark. Re-checks and reviews of marking are limited to the assessments below, while a formal appeal can cover assessment results in any format:

ServiceWho it is forDeadline and fee
Clerical re-checkNon-MCQ exams delivered on paperApply within 10 UK business working days of the results date; fee not stated on the page we read
Post-results review of markingFails in written response exams, coursework or dissertations£93, refunded if the review results in a pass; apply within 20 UK business working days of the results date for exams, 25 for coursework and dissertations
Formal appealAssessment results (any format), on marking or the standards of the assessment, once all other routes of enquiry are exhausted£126, refunded if the appeal succeeds; within 28 calendar days of the CII closing the enquiry

From the CII’s Post-results services page, read 5 November 2026. If you have booked a resit for the same unit and a re-check or appeal results in a pass, the entry fee for that unit is refunded; after a review of marking for an exam, the pass must come before you resit, and you claim the refund from Customer Service.

If something on the day affected your MCQ exam, such as a technical fault or illness, the route is special consideration: tell the invigilator at the time and apply to online.exams@cii.co.uk within five working days.

Where to start

Not sure which CII exam to sit first? Start with R01

If you are heading for financial advice or paraplanning, R01 Financial services, regulation and ethics is where we suggest you start (our suggestion, not a CII rule). The CII calls it a core unit of the Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning, which the CII says meets the FCA’s qualification requirements for retail investment advisers.

Working in general insurance instead? IF1 is one way to meet the Certificate in Insurance’s core requirement (LM1 and LM2 is another), and the CII strongly recommends sitting the required core unit or units first; our Cert CII guide sets out that route.

Frequently asked questions

Are CII exams online?

Yes. CII multiple-choice exams are taken on screen, either at a PSI test centre or at home by remote invigilation. Written exams such as R06 are delivered on screen too; the CII names AF4 as the one written unit on paper.

When are the CII exam dates?

Multiple-choice exams have no fixed dates: the CII says they are available daily, subject to availability, and you book your own date in MyCII. Written exams have fixed sittings; R06 in 2027 is on 19 January, 20 April, 6 July and 5 October.

How do I book a CII exam?

For a multiple-choice exam: buy the unit, then in your MyCII dashboard go to Booking and results, click view unit on the exam voucher and then Book exam, which takes you to the PSI platform to choose remote invigilation or a test centre and a date. MCQ exams must be booked more than two days ahead and within your enrolment period.

How much does a CII exam cost?

The exam entry is bought with the unit. For R01 to R04 a UK non-member paid £334 for digital Enrolment only on 5 November 2026 (£234 for members); an Assessment only entry, which in our reading is the one for a resit, was £200 (£146 for members).

How long do CII exam results take?

For multiple-choice exams the result is shown on screen at the end and normally appears in MyCII within 2 UK business working days. Written exam results are typically released by 09:00 UK time on the published date.

What is the pass mark for CII exams?

The CII’s standard pass marks are 70% for Certificate and Award multiple-choice units, 65% for Diploma multiple-choice units and 55% for written Diploma and Advanced Diploma units (AF7 60%). By unit page: R01 to R04 65%, R05 and the IF units 70%, R06 55%. Where necessary, the CII adjusts marks for the difficulty of each exam version.

Can I resit a CII exam?

Yes. For R01 to R06 the unit shop lists Assessment only, an exam entry without study material, which in our reading is the way to pay for a resit. An MCQ resit needs an available booking more than two days ahead; a written resit, such as R06, follows the published sittings and closing dates. The shop listed no Assessment only for IF1, so ask CII Customer Service. The pages we read set no waiting period between attempts.

What do I need for a CII remote invigilation exam?

A laptop or desktop PC with one screen and a webcam you can move for a 360-degree room scan, a quiet private room and a stable internet connection. Tablets, Chromebooks and mobile phones cannot be used.
