Twenty new KNM exam questions in A2 Dutch with English translations, at least two per theme, a grader that scores each theme, and the end term behind every answer.

KNM-examen Oefenen A2: 20 Exam Questions Across the 8 Themes (2026)Open the full article →

Checked 13 October 2026. The questions are our own, written from the end terms for KNM (Staatscourant 2024, 15802), in force for exams since 1 July 2025. The spread of questions over themes in the real exam is not stated in the sources we read; the spread here is ours.

KNM-examen oefenen works best theme by theme, because the exam itself is organised that way. DUO says you get several themes and answer questions for each. The law fixes eight themes, and the end terms list what you must know under each one. This page gives you twenty new questions in A2 Dutch, at least two for every theme, with an English translation under each. The grader gives a total and a score per theme, so you leave knowing which of the eight to study, not just how many you got right. None of the twenty repeats our 10-question KNM practice exam with explanations; do that page first if you have not. ProSyllabus is an independent study site. We are not affiliated with, or endorsed by, DUO, the IND or the Dutch Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment; every rule below is quoted or summarised from their published pages and regulations, and DUO or the IND decides every individual case.

How the twenty questions are spread

No official source we read says how many questions each theme gets in the real exam, so we did not imitate a split we cannot see. Every theme gets two questions, and themes 1, 3, 6 and 7 get a third. The extra four went where the end terms offered separate facts that our other questions had not used, not where we think the exam is heavier. The table shows which end terms the questions were written from.

KNM oefenen: the twenty questions

Answer all twenty before you check. The theme number is printed next to each question, as a study aid; the real exam does not need you to name the theme. Read the Dutch first. If you need the English line to understand a question, mark that question: needing the English line points to a language gap, and then check whether you also had a knowledge gap by answering the question once you have understood it.

Reading your score per theme

With two or three questions per theme, one miss is a signal and not a verdict. Use the per-theme line from the grader with the table below. The point is to decide where the next hour goes.

Per-theme resultWhat to do (our advice)
All correctSkim the end terms of that theme once for the facts we did not ask, then move on.
One missRead the end term of the missed question in Dutch, with the sentences around it. Retest in two days.
Two or more missesTreat the theme as not yet studied. Work through all its end terms before more questions.
Correct only with the English lineList the Dutch key words of the theme and learn them aloud. Use DUO’s practice exams for listening.

The size of each theme tells you how long "work through all its end terms" will take. By our count, Work and income and Institutions have 13 end terms each, Health and Constitution 12 each, Education 11, Manners 7, Housing 6, and History and geography 4. History and geography looks small, but its four end terms carry sixteen separate indicators by our count, from the seventeenth century to public transport. The two-week KNM plan built on the end terms uses both counts to divide two weeks.

Theme by theme: what these questions sample, and what they leave out

Themes 1 to 4: work, manners, housing, health

Work and income. The three questions cover who withholds tax, the ban on discrimination at work, and the duty, in principle, to accept offered work while on a benefit. Not asked here, and worth reading: the ways people find vacancies, the difference between a permanent contract, a temporary contract and a contract through an employment agency, the works council, and what the end terms say about contact with the UWV or the municipality when you lose work.

Manners, values and norms. Two questions: living together unmarried, and building a network through voluntary work and clubs. Left out: that people in the Netherlands can be direct, the official holidays and days of remembrance, and customs at family events such as a birth, a wedding or a death.

Housing. Three questions: saving energy, the estate agent, and reporting a fault. Left out: what a rental contract contains, the three routes to a home (social rent, the free rental sector and buying), meter readings, energy contracts with temporary and fixed rates, and the rules for separating waste.

Health and healthcare. Two questions: the right to an interpreter and referral by the GP. Left out on purpose, because our kit and the other set already test them: the out-of-hours GP service, 112, the prescription, the basic package and the eigen risico. Also read what the end terms say about maternity care and the consultatiebureau, and about welfare help from the municipality.

Themes 5 to 8: history, institutions, the state, education

History and geography. Two questions: the anthem, and the seat of government. Left out: the seventeenth century, colonies and slavery, living with water, the occupation in the Second World War and the Holocaust, immigration since the war, cooperation in the EU, NATO and the UN, and public transport tickets. The end terms also ask you to know the names and location of the provinces.

Institutions. Three questions: keeping the jaaropgave, reporting a move to the municipality, and compulsory motor insurance. Left out: BSN and DigiD, municipal taxes, allowances from the Belastingdienst, the duty to report a serious crime, the ombudsman, and the Juridisch Loket.

Constitution and rule of law. Three questions: the three levels of government, organ donation, and appeal. Left out: the King’s mainly ceremonial role, the two chambers, the three powers, the EU, freedom of expression and of religion, Article 1 of the Constitution, privacy, and women’s right to self-determination. The end terms also expect you to know the name of the King and of the prime minister. Office-holders change, so check the current names on the government’s own site shortly before your exam; we do not print them here.

Education and upbringing. Two questions: parents’ liability and binding school holidays. Left out: the structure of the school system, freedom of education, public and special schools, compulsory lessons on sexuality and sexual diversity, parent meetings, school costs, and study finance from DUO.

What twenty text questions cannot rehearse

The real exam is 45 minutes on a computer, with video fragments and images, and the questions are read aloud through headphones as well as shown on screen. A page of text can test knowledge but not that experience. DUO’s Practising page links two KNM practice exams (Practice exam A2 KNM 1 and 2) and says a desktop computer is the preferred device. They are free according to the IND (page read 13 October 2026); DUO’s own practice page states no price. Sit one of them after you have studied the themes, not before: there are only two, and they are the closest thing to the real screen.

DUO also points to netinnederland.nl, which has videos on exam subjects, and to oefenen.nl for more lessons. If you are weighing a paid book against all this official material, read the Ad Appel book compared with DUO’s practice exams. Who has to take KNM at all, and under which law, is in KNM for Indian knowledge migrants and partners and exemptions and which law applies to you.

Preview the KNM revision kit

Twenty questions touch twenty end terms; the other fifty-eight are still on the syllabus. The kit is a seven-page PDF that restates all eight themes of the official end terms in plain English with the Dutch words the exam uses. Page 1 is free to read in full, so look at it before you decide anything. It is a revision aid from an independent site, not an official document and not a substitute for DUO’s practice exams.

Frequently asked questions

How do I practise for the KNM exam at A2?

Study the eight themes from the end terms, learn the Dutch key word for each fact, test yourself with questions such as the twenty on this page, and rehearse the format with DUO’s two KNM practice exams on inburgeren.nl (free according to the IND, page read 13 October 2026; DUO’s own practice page states no price).

Are these the questions from the real KNM exam?

No. They are our own questions written from the official end terms. We found no published real exam questions.

How many questions per theme are in the real exam?

Not stated in the DUO pages we read. DUO says only that there are several themes and that you answer questions for each. The spread on this page is ours.

Which KNM theme is the biggest?

By our count of end terms, Work and income and Institutions are the largest with 13 each, followed by Health and Constitution with 12 each. A count of end terms is not a count of exam questions.

Why is the English translation shown?

So that you can spot a language gap. If you need the English line to understand a question, work on the Dutch words of that theme, and check that you also know the fact behind it.

Do I need to know the name of the prime minister?

The end terms say a candidate knows the name of the King and of the prime minister. Check the current names on the government’s site shortly before your exam, because office-holders change.

Is there a pass mark I can compare my score with?

No. The DUO pages we read give no pass mark for KNM, so the score here is a learning score, not a pass or fail result.

Are these questions the same as in your other KNM practice page or the revision kit?

No. The twenty here, the ten on our other practice page and the self-check questions in the kit are all different.
