View Complete ArticleChecked 25 September 2026. Our count of the official GATE ME question papers and final keys 2024–2026. GATE publishes no section-wise weightage for ME apart from 13 marks for Engineering Mathematics.
GATE publishes the question papers and keys but no topic-wise weightage — apart from one rule: Engineering Mathematics is 13 of the 85 subject marks. Every other “weightage” figure is somebody’s count. This is ours: each of the 55 subject questions in the official 2024, 2025 and 2026 ME papers, assigned to a section and subject, with the marks from the official key. The result is a paper far more evenly balanced than most students assume, with the swings happening inside sections rather than between them.

Where other pages get this wrong
Engineering Mathematics carries exactly 13 marks in GATE ME, and did in 2024, 2025 and 2026.
Commonly published instead: “Expected weightage: Engineering Mathematics 12.25 marks.”

Our classification of the official papers; marks from the official keys. About a dozen questions straddle two sections (for example a hydraulic crane: statics or fluid statics); we recorded one section and noted the alternative.
The three core sections have carried between 23 and 25 marks every year. There is no “big” section to prioritise and no small one to drop: a student strong in thermal and weak in manufacturing is giving away as much as the reverse. The useful unit of planning is the subject, where the year-to-year swings are real.

Our classification of the official ME papers 2024–2026.
Three subjects stand out. Industrial engineering — production planning, inventory, operations research — averaged 8 marks and reached 10 in 2026, and its questions are mostly short numerical problems that reward practice. Mechanics of materials held at 7–8 every year. Heat transfer averaged over 7 despite a dip in 2025. Engineering mechanics is the volatile one: 2 marks in 2025, 8 in 2026.
| 2024 | 2025 | 2026 | Topic |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 5 | 2 | Calculus |
| 2 | 3 | 5 | Differential equations |
| 3 | 1 | 0 | Linear algebra |
| 2 | 1 | 2 | Probability and statistics |
| 1 | 2 | 2 | Complex variables |
| 1 | 1 | 2 | Numerical methods |
| 13 | 13 | 13 | Total |
Marks per maths topic, our classification of the official papers. By our count, in 2026 all 13 maths marks were MCQs, so all carried a penalty.
Maths is the one section with a fixed size, and it is the most reliable 13 marks on the paper for a prepared candidate. Calculus and differential equations together carried 6, 8 and 7 marks in the three years; linear algebra, a favourite of coaching schedules, had no question at all in 2026. Numerical methods now explicitly includes ordinary differential equations in the 2027 syllabus.
| 2025 | 2026 | Section | 2024 marks via MCQ / MSQ / NAT |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 / 0 / 7 | 13 / 0 / 0 | Engineering Mathematics | 7 / 0 / 6 |
| 10 / 0 / 13 | 14 / 0 / 11 | Applied Mechanics & Design | 6 / 2 / 16 |
| 5 / 2 / 17 | 10 / 0 / 13 | Fluid Mechanics & Thermal Sciences | 8 / 2 / 14 |
| 15 / 0 / 10 | 10 / 0 / 14 | Materials, Manufacturing & Industrial Engg | 12 / 0 / 12 |
Marks by question type in each section, our classification of the official papers and keys.
The move towards penalty-carrying MCQs was uneven: in 2026 it hit maths (all 13 marks MCQ) and applied mechanics hardest, while manufacturing actually shifted the other way, towards numerical questions. For revision that means practising calculations to a numerical answer in manufacturing and industrial engineering, and practising careful option elimination in maths and mechanics.
Each of the 55 subject questions in the official 2024, 2025 and 2026 papers was read and assigned to one of the syllabus’s four sections and to a subject within it; the question type and marks come from the official final key. About a dozen questions sit on a boundary — a hydraulic crane that is both statics and fluid statics, a von Mises question that is both failure theory and forming — and for those we recorded one section and noted the alternative. So the counts are ours, not GATE’s, and a different reader could move a mark or two between neighbouring subjects; the section totals are much less sensitive than the subject totals.
What the counts cannot tell you is where the 2027 additions will fit. Roughly twenty topics were added to the syllabus, but the paper is still 85 subject marks, and there is no official statement about how many questions the new material will carry. Since the sections have been held at 23–25 marks each, it is most likely that new topics replace older ones within their own section rather than enlarge it — an inference, not a rule.
| Topic | Papers |
|---|---|
| Inventory / EOQ | 2024 Q38, 2025 Q64, 2026 Q61 |
| Rankine cycle / regeneration | 2024 Q21, 2025 Q52, 2026 Q44 |
| Radiation view factor | 2024 Q50, 2025 Q48, 2026 Q54 |
| Gears (trains and tooth interference) | 2024 Q52 (epicyclic train), 2025 Q59 (interference), 2026 Q17 (gear train) |
| PERT / CPM | 2025 Q65, 2026 Q65 |
| Linear programming | 2024 Q39, 2026 Q46 |
| Taylor’s tool life | 2024 Q60, 2026 Q64 |
| Solidification time (Chvorinov) | 2024 Q61, 2025 Q62 |
| Thin pressure vessels | 2024 Q57, 2026 Q51 |
Question numbers in the official ME papers (our reading).
These are the best return on practice time: each has appeared in at least two of the last three papers, most as numerical questions with no penalty. The official papers and keys for 2021–2026 are free on the GATE 2027 website — work them as full timed papers first, then by topic using the table above.
Practise it, don't just read it
Industrial engineering, strength of materials and heat transfer carried the most marks. Our GATE ME quizzes cover each subject in 10-question sets.
The ProSyllabus GATE ME library has topic quizzes on engineering mathematics, statics, strength of materials, theory of machines and vibrations, fluid mechanics and turbomachinery, thermodynamics, conduction, convection and radiation, refrigeration and air conditioning, and manufacturing — the first quiz is free.
GATE publishes only maths (13 marks); by our count each core section carried 23–25 marks in 2024–2026.
Industrial engineering averaged 8 marks (10 in 2026), followed by mechanics of materials and heat transfer.
13, exactly, in every paper.
Inventory/EOQ, Rankine cycle, radiation view factor and gear trains appeared in each of 2024, 2025 and 2026.
On the GATE 2027 website’s downloads page, with official keys, for 2021–2026.
Sections are stable (23–25 marks); individual subjects swing by several marks.
65: 10 General Aptitude and 55 subject questions.
It varied from 2 marks (2025) to 8 (2026).
The control, automation and quality additions did not appear in 2023–2026.
No — it is our count of the official papers.
Calculus and differential equations, 6–8 marks together in each of 2024–2026.
GATE has not said; sections held at 23–25 marks in 2024–2026, so new topics most likely replace older ones within a section (our inference).
Engineering mechanics: 2 marks in 2025, 8 in 2026.
No, by our count; it had 3 marks in 2024 and 1 in 2025.
