Checked 25 September 2026. From the official GATE 2026 and GATE 2027 ME syllabus PDFs, the GATE 2027 brochure (revised 17 Sep 2026) and a text search of the official ME papers 2023–2026. The ME exam date and session are not yet published.

The GATE 2027 brochure says the syllabi of most papers were revised. For Mechanical Engineering the change is one of substance, and we checked it line by line. The official ME syllabus published by IIT Madras grew from two pages to three and from about 850 words to nearly 1,000, with roughly twenty topics added — from PID controllers and two-degree-of-freedom vibration to combustion, pumps, non-destructive testing, programmable logic controllers and six sigma — and a few removed, including Lagrange’s equation and Heisler’s charts. Some popular pages still tell students to follow the 2026 syllabus. This guide sets out every change, subject by subject, checks which new topics have ever been asked in an ME paper, and ends with a revision plan built around the new content.

Where other pages get this wrong

The GATE 2027 ME syllabus is published and differs materially from 2026.

Commonly published instead: “The official GATE ME Syllabus 2027 will be released soon … refer to the previous syllabus.”

The 2027 ME syllabus is on the GATE 2027 website and in the brochure (printed pages 80–82); the 2026 syllabus misses roughly twenty of its topics.

Every change, subject by subject

SubjectAdded in 2027Removed or reworded
Engineering Mathematics—“Cauchy’s integral theorem and integral formula” reworded as “contour integral formula”; numerical methods now say “ordinary” differential equations
Engineering MechanicsPlane trusses; rolling resistanceLagrange’s equation removed; “rolling friction” → rolling resistance
Mechanics of MaterialsElastic constants and their relationships; 2D stress and strain transformations; thin-walled pressure vessels; mechanical properties, toughness“Testing with universal testing machine”, “thin cylinders”, “Poisson’s ratio” no longer as separate wording
VibrationsLinear systems with one and two degrees of freedom; damping estimation; transmissibility ratio; control system, PID controller, transfer function“Effect of damping” reworded
Machine DesignBelt drives—
Fluid MechanicsVelocity potential; one-dimensional high-speed compressible flow through converging and C-D nozzles“Basics of compressible fluid flow” replaced
Heat TransferBoiling and condensationHeisler’s charts removed
ThermodynamicsFirst- and second-law analysis of closed and open systems; energy and entropy changes—
ApplicationsBasics of combustion (air-fuel ratio, equivalence ratio); pumps and pump characteristicsCompressors moved under turbomachinery
Engineering MaterialsCrystal structure of common metals; metals, alloys, polymers, composites, ceramics; engineering vs true stress–strainGeneral “structure and properties” wording
Casting, forming, joiningCasting defects; solid-state welding; non-destructive testing; powder metallurgy applicationsNamed forming processes replaced by “bulk and sheet forming”
MachiningSingle-point tool geometry — ASA and ORS systemsNC/CNC moved to CAM and automation
Additive Manufacturing (new head)Principles of AM processes; products, advantages, limitations, applicationsWas one phrase under CIM
CAM and Automation (was CIM)Pneumatic, electro-pneumatic and hydraulic actuators; programmable logic controllersNC/CNC and CNC programming moved here from machining
Production planning and inventory (merged)Work study, productivity, six sigma; quality and reliability for product life-cycle analysis—

Our word-level comparison of the official GATE 2026 (IIT Guwahati) and GATE 2027 (IIT Madras) ME syllabus PDFs. The four sections are unchanged: Engineering Mathematics; Applied Mechanics and Design; Fluid Mechanics and Thermal Sciences; Materials, Manufacturing and Industrial Engineering.

Have the new topics ever been asked?

We searched the official ME question papers from 2023 to 2026 for the new topics. There were no questions at all on PID controllers or transfer functions, two-degree-of-freedom systems, air-fuel or equivalence ratio, PLCs or pneumatics, six sigma, work study or reliability — and none on the removed topics, Lagrange’s equation and Heisler’s charts, either. So there are no ME previous-year questions to practise the control, automation and quality additions from; practice has to come from textbooks, mock tests and other GATE papers that already cover them. A handful of “new” items were already examined under older wording: a C-D nozzle (2024 Q40), additive manufacturing (2025 Q40, 2026 Q31) and CAD solid models (2025 Q23, 2026 Q45). A condenser appeared as a heat-exchanger numerical (2024 Q49), which is related to but not the same as the new boiling-and-condensation topic; and the only 2026 turning question (Q63) is cutting mechanics, not the new ASA/ORS tool-geometry item. The “pump” questions in past papers are heat-pump refrigeration cycles, not the new pump characteristics.

New paper combinations

GATE 2026AE, DA, IN, NM, PI, XE
GATE 2027AE, CS, DA, IN, NM, PI, RA, XE

GATE 2026 and 2027 brochures. RA (Robotics and Automation) is new in 2027; its Mechanical option (Part B2) still uses the older ME wording for mechanics of materials.

The new ME + RA pairing is worth a look for students drawn to automation: RA has a common part and a choice of optional parts, including a mechanical one, and the new ME topics on control, actuators and PLCs overlap with it. Note that the two syllabi are not aligned — RA’s mechanical part keeps older ME wording (thin cylinders, UTM testing) that ME revised, and adds items of its own such as Castigliano’s theorems — so each paper’s own syllabus is the one to follow.

A revision plan built on the changes

From today to the first GATE 2027 exam day, 6 February 2027, is about 19 weeks; ME’s own date and session have not been announced (in 2026 ME was on the afternoon of 14 February). The paper is evenly balanced — maths is 13 marks by rule and each of the three core sections carried 23 to 25 marks in 2024–2026 (our count) — so no section can be skipped. The new topics sit inside their sections, but they need deliberate time because there are no ME past papers for them — treat them as a priority within each section. The planner below splits your hours in proportion to the marks; the shares are our suggestion.

Pick a likely exam day (the six GATE 2027 dates; ME’s is not yet known). Section weights are our count of the 2024–2026 papers; GATE publishes only the 15 marks for General Aptitude and 13 for Engineering Mathematics.

Practise it, don't just read it

The core subjects still carry almost all the marks. Our GATE ME quizzes cover mechanics, strength of materials, machines and vibrations, fluids, thermodynamics, heat transfer, refrigeration and manufacturing.

The ProSyllabus GATE ME library has topic quizzes on engineering mathematics, statics, strength of materials, theory of machines and vibrations, fluid mechanics and turbomachinery, thermodynamics, conduction, convection and radiation, refrigeration and air conditioning, and manufacturing — the first quiz is free.
