Ad Appel KNM Book vs DUO Practice Exams: What Is Enough? (2026)

Two questions sit behind the search "Ad Appel KNM": is that book worth buying, and is DUO’s official material enough without it? This page answers what can be answered from sources. It sets out what the publisher itself says about the book, what DUO offers, and what the regulation says about study material. Then it gives you a planner that lists what the end terms require for each theme, so you can check any book, course or website against the syllabus yourself. The book is the "Studieboek inburgering KNM", sold by Ad Appel Taaltrainingen on its own site. Everything in this table is taken from the publisher’s pages on 13 October 2026 and is the publisher’s own description. We report it; we have not verified it.

Three things the pages we read do not say. They give no edition or print date for the book. They do not mention the end terms of 1 July 2025 by name; the wording is that the book is "up-to-date". And the sentence that someone who knows the book "will certainly pass" is a seller’s statement, not a guarantee anyone can check: the DUO pages we read give no results by study method. None of that is a criticism of the book. It is what you should ask before paying for any KNM book, new or second-hand: which edition is this, and does it follow the exam as it has been since 1 July 2025?

DUO’s page does not say how many questions a practice exam contains, which themes it samples, or how its result compares with a pass. When the exam changed, DUO told candidates to use the old practice exams only for an exam before 1 July 2025 and announced an adjusted practice exam afterwards; our guide to the eight themes and 78 eindtermen has those two announcements. So the practice exams on the page today belong to the current exam, and in our view they are the best rehearsal of the format available. They are still two papers. Treat them as a mirror of the format, not as the syllabus.

The regulation that introduced the new end terms speaks about study material directly, which is unusual and useful. Its foreword says the considerable differences between the old and the new end terms will inevitably have consequences not only for the exam but also for teaching material and textbooks. Its explanatory note adds that publishers must adapt or renew their KNM material, that course providers bear the cost of buying it, that there were 154 course institutions with the Blik op Werk quality mark for civic integration at the time, and that a course book costs EUR 40 on average. The regulation names no book and recommends none.

This is the practical part. The end terms group what you must know into 27 sub-areas under the eight themes. Pick a theme, tick the material you have, and the planner shows the sub-areas to cover and what each source says about its own coverage. Use the list as a table of contents test: open your book, course notes or website and see whether each sub-area is there.

You cannot read a whole book in a shop or from a product page, but you can look up five things. Each is in the current end terms. We have not compared them line by line with the 2015 end terms, so we do not call them all "new"; the first two are the points the government itself named when it announced the new exam.

Which route you need also depends on why you are sitting KNM. A knowledge migrant who takes the exam voluntarily for permanent residence has no integration duty and so no DUO deadline (our reading of the Besluit inburgering 2021, art 2.2), while a family migrant with an integration duty does; see KNM for Indian knowledge migrants and partners and the deadline and fines for family migrants.
