NPPF Sergeants' Legal Exam (Step Two) Group Discussion
The NPPF Step Two sergeants' legal examination is the national law and procedure exam that police constables in England and Wales take on the way to promotion to sergeant under the National Police Promotion Framework (NPPF), which is run by the College of Policing. It is step two of four: competence in current rank, the legal examination, local selection and matching to vacancies, then 12 months' temporary promotion with a work-based assessment. The exam is a single three-hour online paper of 150 multiple-choice questions covering crime, evidence and procedure, and general police duties, and the questions are drawn solely from the current edition of the Blackstone's Police Manuals. Ten questions are removed in marking, so candidates are scored on 140, and the sergeants' pass mark is 55% (77 correct answers out of 140). It is held twice a year. Regular constables can enter once they have two years' service and have completed probation, through their force examinations officer. A pass is valid for five years (less one day).
