Exam overview
The NHS Graduate Management Training Scheme (GMTS) trains future NHS leaders in England in five specialisms: General Management, Human Resources, Finance, Digital – Health Informatics, and Engineering & Estates Management. For 2027 entry (applications now closed) the NHS describes three assessed stages after the application form. Stage 1, the Future Potential Assessment, is online, takes about 45 minutes and is not time-limited. Stage 2, the NHS GMTS Alignment Assessment, takes about 60 minutes and includes video responses; only the video questions are timed, with time to prepare before recording, and the NHS says its team manually reviews all video interview responses and does not use artificial intelligence for that review. Stage 3 is a half-day Virtual Assessment Centre (VAC) with several exercises, where candidates meet the NHS team and other candidates; VACs run from January to February 2027. Candidates get a feedback report after each stage, and the VAC ends in an offer, a place on the reserve list or an unsuccessful outcome. The NHS says the process assesses strengths, values and motivation rather than what or where you studied. The minimum starting salary is £31,276 (plus High Cost Area Supplement where it applies), with the opportunity to increase to £33,681 after 12 months, subject to satisfactory probation; trainees start on the first Monday of September 2027. Entry needs a 2:2 degree in any subject or an accepted equivalent (Engineering & Estates Management has its own degree rules) and the right to work in the UK for the whole Scheme.
