Extra questions & answers
How did China and Japan differ around 1800?
China, ruled by the secure Qing dynasty, was a vast continental land; Japan was a small island country that seemed isolated, yet Japan modernised faster.
How was Japan "opened" to the West?
In 1853–54 the USA sent Commodore Perry, whose "black ships" forced Japan to sign a treaty permitting trade and diplomatic relations.
What was the Meiji Restoration?
The 1868 movement that removed the shogun, restored the emperor and made Edo the capital, renamed Tokyo ("eastern capital").
What did "fukoku kyohei" mean and involve?
"Rich country, strong army" — building the economy and a modern military through compulsory schooling, railways, banks, imported machinery and zaibatsu firms.
What were the zaibatsu?
Large family-controlled business houses (e.g. Mitsubishi, Sumitomo) that dominated Japan's economy until after the Second World War.
How did the Opium War affect China?
Britain used force (1839–42) to expand its opium trade; this defeat undermined the Qing dynasty and strengthened demands for reform.
Who was Sun Yat-sen and what were his ideas?
Regarded as the founder of modern China, he led the 1911 republic and gave the Three Principles — nationalism, democracy and socialism.
How did Mao Zedong differ from earlier Marxists?
He based his revolution on the peasantry rather than the urban working class, building support during the Jiangxi soviet and the Long March (1934–35).
What major campaigns shaped the People's Republic after 1949?
The Great Leap Forward (1958) for rapid industrialisation and people's communes, and the Cultural Revolution (1965 onwards), which disrupted the economy and education.
What did Deng Xiaoping's reforms from 1978 bring?
The Four Modernisations (science, industry, agriculture, defence) and a socialist market economy with strong Party control and integration into the world market.
