Queensland Coal Mining Law Exam Practice Test
Queensland coal candidates, such as deputies, open-cut examiners, underground mine managers and site senior executives, sit the Board of Examiners law exam; for certificates of competency it must be passed before the oral panel. RSHQ describes it as a 2-hour, 2-part closed book exam on the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999 and Regulation 2017, with 70% needed in each part. Practise both pieces of law here: 120 questions in six topic sets of 20, then three mixed mocks that score the Act and the Regulation separately against 70%. Every answer is explained with the section it comes from. Start with 4 questions free.

The real exam, from RSHQ’s own pages
- Format: a 2-hour, 2-part closed book exam on the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999 and the Coal Mining Safety and Health Regulation 2017.
- Pass mark: 70% for each part.
- Question style: RSHQ says written questions may be short answer or multiple choice, depending on the competency. Our questions are multiple choice with one correct answer.
- Order of assessment: candidates must pass the law exam before they can sit the oral panel assessment (site senior executive notice applicants are the exception RSHQ names).
- Where and how: written exams are held monthly in Brisbane, Dysart, Mackay, Moranbah and Rockhampton. RSHQ is moving them online; site senior executive (coal) and open-cut examiner candidates already sit the legislation exam online.
- Resits: after a first unsuccessful attempt with a result between 30% and 70%, you can sit again 3 months from the result notification. After a second unsuccessful attempt you must send the Board a written report on your study; a third leads to a show cause request.
Checked on 31 October 2026 on RSHQ’s Examinations page, Certificates of competency page, Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999 and Coal Mining Safety and Health Regulation 2017 (RSHQ pages last updated 28 and 29 October 2026; the Act and Regulation on legislation.qld.gov.au).

What do I get?
Six practice sets of 20 questions each, 120 in all: three sets on the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999 and three on the Coal Mining Safety and Health Regulation 2017. The same 120 questions are also regrouped into three mixed mocks of 40 (20 Act, 20 Regulation), which show your Act score and your Regulation score, each held to 70%. Each set and mock runs in our exam player (timer, question palette, mark for review) and ends with your score, your time per question and the explanation of every answer, with the section it comes from. Retake any set as often as you like; access does not expire.
Which certificates is this for?
The coal mining law exam that RSHQ’s Board of Examiners sets for coal certificates of competency and site senior executive notices, such as deputy, open-cut examiner, underground mine manager and ventilation officer. The sets cover topics from across the Act and Regulation that the exam tests, including the underground chapter (explosion risk zones, gas, ventilation, self-rescuers) and the surface chapter (open-cut examiner duties). It is not for the mineral mines and quarries exam, which tests a different Act.
Are these real exam questions?
No. They are our own questions, written from the Act and Regulation, and RSHQ has not written or endorsed them. The real exam may also use short answer questions, so practise writing out the key duties and limits in your own words as well.
Is the law up to date?
The questions follow the Act as current at 1 July 2026 and the Regulation as current at 1 September 2026, as published on legislation.qld.gov.au and read on 31 October 2026. If the law changes, the legislation decides, not this practice.
Will my score here predict my result?
No. A practice score shows where you are strong and weak on our questions; it is not a forecast of your exam result.
How do I pay and get access?
One payment by card, handled by our payment provider. The price is shown and charged in Australian dollars in Australia, in your own currency elsewhere where we support it, and otherwise in Indian rupees. Access opens on this device straight after payment. Sign in afterwards to keep it on your account.
