Spread across the material the S-12 exam covers (chapters 1 to 16 of the S-12/S-15 booklet). On the real S-12 the FDNY hands you reference material (a temperature rating table and inspection, testing and maintenance reference guides). Our practice exam gives you none, so the frequency questions are a little harder here than on the day.
Who needs the S-12
A person who inspects, tests and maintains sprinkler systems in New York City buildings must hold this certificate. The S-12 exam covers chapters 1 to 16 of the S-12/S-15 study material. How were the answers checked?
Every answer is tied to a line of the FDNY study material, and every question was then answered again, independently and without our answer key, with the study material to hand. A question went in only when those answers matched ours and nobody raised an objection to it.
Is this the current S-12 format?
It follows the S-12 exam as the FDNY's study material (revised March 2024 (application and payment details)) describes it: 75 multiple-choice questions in about 135 minutes, at least 70% to pass. Format last checked 23 October 2026. The FDNY asks candidates to check for the latest booklet before the exam, so look at it before your test day.
Is it official?
No. This is independent practice by ProSyllabus, not produced, endorsed or checked by the FDNY or the City of New York.
