Law questions say which part of the UK they apply to. Each question has one correct answer and an explanation of why.

Not in this pack yet

  • the visual identification test (20 images): we will not use photos we do not hold a licence for, so the photo trainer is not ready; the species questions in the written mocks practise the identification features in words
  • a live safety assessment or a range: the safety walk and the shooting test are explained below

What you see after every mock

  • Your score against DMQ's pass mark: 40 of 50 on a written mock, 32 of 40 on a hygiene mock.
  • Your score in each area, so you can see whether law, species or the larder costs you the most marks.
  • Your time per question and any answer you changed from right to wrong.
  • The reason behind every answer, with the law or guidance it rests on.

A score here is your score on our questions. It is not a DSC1 result and does not predict one.

The five DSC1 modules, as DMQ describes them

  • Written: 50 multiple-choice questions taken from a bank; pass with at least 40 correct.
  • Visual: 20 images covering the six species of wild deer in the UK; name the species and the sex of each, both right for the mark; pass with at least 16 of 20.
  • Game Meat Hygiene: 40 multiple-choice questions; pass with at least 32 correct. Passing it completes the theory element of trained hunter status.
  • Safety: see below.
  • Shooting: see below.

You register with an assessment centre and have three years to pass all five modules; a module you fail is the only one you resit. DMQ says a candidate can request an Assessment-only DSC1 and complete the assessments in one day without attending a full DSC1 course. Some assessment centres offer training courses; training fees are payable to the provider, not to DMQ.

The safety assessment

You walk a safety assessment path and are shown four deer targets: for each you say whether you would shoot or not. You are also asked nine other questions on safety, and every answer must be right to pass. DMQ's DSC1 page does not give the topics of those questions. Our written mocks include safety questions on topics we chose: backstops, skylined deer, ricochet, muzzle awareness, proving a rifle clear and carrying it loaded.

The shooting test

  • Two shots into the chest killing area of a DMQ deer target at 100 m, prone or from a simulated high seat (if available); normal stalking aids such as a rucksack or bipod may be used.
  • Two shots into the chest killing area at 70 m, standing, kneeling or sitting; aids such as a bipod or sticks may be used.
  • Two shots into the humane despatch (head) killing area at 10 to 20 m, standing, sticks allowed; shooting safety glasses must be worn. DMQ says the range for this discipline may vary due to individual range requirements.

Before you buy

Are these DMQ's bank questions?

No. Every question is our own, written from the Deer Act 1991, the Scottish and Northern Irish deer law, the Firearms Act 1968, the food hygiene rules for wild game, FSA and Home Office guidance and the Wild Deer Best Practice guides. None is copied from DMQ's question banks or a real test.

Is this made or recommended by DMQ or BASC?

No. It is independent practice by ProSyllabus, not affiliated with DMQ, BASC or any assessment centre.

What is free?

A 5-question sample of the written test, with the full result page. One payment unlocks all 6 written mocks and the 4 game meat hygiene mocks.

Is the law up to date?

The questions follow the law as it stood on 30 October 2026, including Scotland's removal of the close season for male deer (21 October 2023) and Scotland's reduction of the minimum bullet weight for deer of any species from 100 to 80 grains (3 November 2023), with the separate 50-grain roe deer provision unchanged. Questions on Scottish rules that the Natural Environment (Scotland) Act 2026 is changing but has not yet brought into force are left out.

Will this make me pass?

We do not claim that it will. It gives you timed practice at DMQ's question counts, your score against the pass mark on our questions and the reason behind every answer, so you can see where to revise.

How do I pay and get access?
