Checked 29 September 2026. Dates from the SQE booking-windows page as captured by the Wayback Machine on 20 July 2026, the latest capture available; dates it showed as TBC are printed as TBC, with any reported date labelled as reported. QWE, character and suitability and admission rules from SRA pages (updated 26 Jan 2024, 1 Aug 2026 and 23 Jan 2025).
Qualifying as a solicitor through the SQE is a sequence with clocks in it. SQE1 runs twice a year and SQE2 four times; results take weeks for SQE1 and months for SQE2; a six-year window opens on the day you sit your first assessment; and on the standard route two years of qualifying work experience (QWE) must be done and confirmed before you can be admitted. This page lays out every 2026–27 date the SRA has published, the rules that turn those dates into a plan, and the final steps to admission, with a planner for your own start date. The SQE assessment website (sqe.sra.org.uk) now sits behind a security check we did not bypass, so its pages are quoted from Wayback Machine captures, with the capture date given. ProSyllabus is an independent study site. We are not affiliated with, or endorsed by, the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) or Kaplan, which delivers the SQE for the SRA; every rule below is quoted or summarised from their published pages, and the SRA decides every application.

Your SQE timeline and six-year clock
Pick your first SQE1 sitting and your route. Official dates are shown as official; anything the SRA has not confirmed is shown as TBC or labelled as our estimate.
Official dates from the SQE booking-windows page (Wayback capture 20 Jul 2026, the latest available). Dates marked reported come from a coaching site that says it read the live SQE page on 20 Sep 2026; confirm them in your SQE account. Estimates are our arithmetic from the SQE website rules: SQE1 results 5–6 weeks after a sitting, booking closes about 5 weeks before one. Not advice from the SRA.

Source: SQE booking-windows page, Wayback capture 20 July 2026; the January 2026 row is printed as that page gave it, as one window. January 2027 booking-close and results dates are reported (SQE1 Prep, read 20 September 2026), not verified. You attend one oral sitting (two consecutive half days); written and oral must be completed in the same window.
Four rules from the SQE website turn this table into a plan. SQE2 can be booked only after you pass SQE1 (or hold a full SQE1 exemption). Booking closes about five weeks before a sitting. SQE1 results arrive five to six weeks after the sitting and SQE2 results 14 to 18 weeks after, so in practice SQE2 resits are at least about six months apart. And from 2027 the April SQE2 window starts a week earlier and runs for about four weeks, because April is the largest SQE2 sitting; the other windows are typically two to three weeks long.
Where other pages get this wrong
You choose your SQE2 oral sitting when you book, subject to availability — and an SQE2 window can run well past two weeks.
Commonly published instead: Some notices say oral sittings are allocated to you, or that SQE2 spreads over "roughly two weeks".
The booking-windows page says you attend one oral sitting and "will be able to select which sitting when booking opens, subject to availability". What is allocated is the report time on the day: some candidates are randomly given a 12:40 report time with about three hours of supervised waiting. October 2026 runs from 27 October to 11 November, and April 2027 from 20 April to 14 May.
The six-year clock and the three-attempt rule
The SQE website puts it plainly: "You have six years in which to complete SQE1 and SQE2. The six-year period starts from the first day you sit your first SQE assessment. You have up to three attempts at SQE1 and SQE2 within this time." Under regulation 4.3 of the SQE Assessment Regulations you must sit FLK1 and FLK2 in the same window, unless you are resitting the one paper you failed, or the SRA has approved mitigating circumstances or reasonable adjustments that allow otherwise. Fail both and you retake both together; fail one and you resit only that one. The clock does not start when you register, validate your degree or apply for an exemption — only when you sit. Regulation 7.4 lets the SRA extend the six years, but only in exceptional circumstances and at its discretion, so do not plan on it. The SRA's exemptions Q&A adds that there is no time limit on when you must sit any remaining assessment after an exemption is granted. Twice-yearly SQE1 sittings mean six years hold up to twelve SQE1 windows, far more than three attempts need; the clock is more likely to bite a candidate who passes SQE1 and then delays SQE2 for years.
Qualifying work experience (QWE)
| Rule | What the SRA says |
|---|---|
| Length | Two years full-time, or the equivalent |
| Where | Up to four organisations, paid or volunteer; in England and Wales or overseas, and it need not cover the law of England and Wales |
| Content | Must involve providing legal services and give you the chance to develop at least two of the competences in the Statement of Solicitor Competence |
| Who confirms it | A COLP, or a solicitor of England and Wales who has direct knowledge of the work (from direct supervision, working with you, or reviewing your work). A solicitor outside the organisation can confirm only where the rules on external confirmation are met (rule 2.2(c)) — they must review your work and get feedback from someone who supervised it |
| When | Before, during or after the SQE; it can be claimed retrospectively, with no limit on how far back |
| Registration | Recorded and confirmed in mySRA; must be registered by the time you apply for admission; the end date cannot be in the future |
| Qualified lawyers | QWE does not apply to them |
Source: SRA qualifying work experience pages (updated 26 January 2024), the SRA QWE questions and answers, and QWE registration guidance.
For an Indian law graduate who is not yet enrolled, the retrospective rule matters: legal work already done in India can count as QWE, as long as a solicitor of England and Wales with direct knowledge of the work, or a COLP, can confirm it. That confirmation, not the location of the work, is usually the hard part for someone who worked outside a UK-regulated firm. An enrolled Indian advocate whose professional qualification gives current rights to practise is a qualified lawyer in the SRA's sense, and qualified lawyers need no QWE (see our guide for Indian advocates).
The last steps to admission
| Step | What you need | Fee or timing |
|---|---|---|
| Degree | A degree in any subject, or a UK level 6 equivalent qualification — or relevant work experience, which the SRA considers case by case — validated through Atlantic Data | £54.84 international / £36 UK or Ireland |
| SQE | Pass SQE1, and SQE2 unless exempt, within six years | £2,006 / £3,086 for sittings from October 2026 (the SRA's own two wordings of the start differ) |
| QWE | Two years, confirmed (standard route only) | No SRA fee listed |
| English | Proof of English or Welsh proficiency if you were exempted from SQE2 | SELT within three years, if used |
| Character and suitability | Background screening before applying; a free early assessment is optional | UK screening £34; overseas-only screening no SRA fee, but overseas criminal-record checks at each country's charge; early assessment closed 1 Aug to 31 Oct 2026 |
| Good standing (qualified lawyers) | A certificate of good standing from every jurisdiction where you are admitted | Less than three months old; the SRA recommends no more than two |
| Admission | Apply in mySRA after retrieving your SQE results | £100; the SRA aims to admit within 30 days |

A timing trap for autumn 2026. The SRA's voluntary early character and suitability assessment is closed from 1 August to 31 October 2026, its busiest time for admissions. Anyone who wants an early assessment once it reopens after 31 October is asked to complete background screening no earlier than 1 October 2026. If something in your history (a conviction, a financial or regulatory issue) needs an early view, plan around that window; the SRA aims to decide within 120 days of a complete application.
When is the next SQE1?
January 2027: FLK1 11 to 15 January and FLK2 18 to 22 January 2027. Then July 2027: 12 to 16 and 19 to 23 July.
When will January 2027 SQE1 results come out?
The latest official capture we could read shows TBC. A coaching site that says it read the live SQE page on 20 September 2026 reports 9 March 2027; we could not check that against the official page. Confirm it in your SQE account.
How long do I have to pass the SQE?
Six years from the first day you sit your first SQE assessment, with up to three attempts at each part.
Can the six-year period be extended?
Only in exceptional circumstances, at the SRA's discretion, under regulation 7.4 of the SQE Assessment Regulations. Plan to finish inside the six years.
Can I sit SQE2 straight after SQE1?
Only after passing SQE1, and only if booking is still open for the next SQE2 window when your result arrives. Booking closes about five weeks before a sitting.
Where are the SQE2 orals held?
Only in Birmingham, Cardiff, London and Manchester. The written assessments are at Pearson VUE centres in the UK and internationally.
Can QWE be done in India?
Yes. The SRA says QWE can be gained overseas and need not cover English law, but it must be confirmed by a COLP or a solicitor of England and Wales with direct knowledge of the work; an external solicitor has extra conditions.
Can QWE be counted retrospectively?
Yes, with no limit on how far back, as long as it meets the QWE rules and someone eligible confirms it.
How long does admission take?
The SRA aims to admit within 30 days of an application, unless there is a character and suitability issue. The fee is £100.
Why can I not apply for an early character assessment now?
The SRA has closed the voluntary early assessment from 1 August to 31 October 2026, its busiest period for admissions.
