R06 Exam Dates 2026/27: Sittings, Case Study Release, Booking, Results

Checked 7 November 2026. Sitting, closing and results dates were read on the CII’s Important exam deadlines page on 7 November 2026; the CII showed the date bookings open as TBC for every 2027 sitting. Check that page and the R06 unit page before you book.

The CII R06 Financial planning practice exam sits four times in 2027: 19 January 2027, 20 April 2027, 6 July 2027 and 5 October 2027. Booking for each closes on a Monday 15 days before the exam (4 January 2027 for January), the two case studies reach you two weeks before the exam, and results come out on a Friday 38 days after it (26 February 2027 for January). Results for the 6 October 2026 sitting are released on 13 November 2026. R06 is a three-hour written exam of two case studies, typed on screen, with a standard pass mark of 55%. This guide sets out every date, what happens in the case-study fortnight, which tax year each sitting tests, and gives you a countdown from today. ProSyllabus is an independent study site. It is not affiliated with the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII), and nothing here is official. Every date, rule and exam fact below is taken from the CII’s own pages and documents, read on 7 November 2026 unless another date is given; where we add our own reading or suggestion, we say so.

R06 exam dates 2027

These are the R06 sittings the CII has confirmed for 2027, with the closing date for bookings and the results release date for each. We add the day the case studies should arrive, counted back two weeks from the exam:

Sitting, closing and results dates from the CII’s Important exam deadlines page, read 7 November 2026; “Available to book from” showed TBC for every 2027 sitting. The case-study column is the exam date minus 14 days, our reading of the R06 unit page’s “two weeks prior”: we found no exact release day on the CII pages we checked. The tax-year column follows the R06 unit page (2026/27 examined from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2027).

Day counts are ours, from the CII’s published dates.

The pattern is regular: every 2027 sitting is on a Tuesday, closes on the Monday 15 days earlier, and reports on the Friday 38 days later. The 6 October 2026 sitting followed the same 38-day gap to its results on 13 November 2026.

Booking closes before the case studies arrive

Booking for each sitting closes the day before the case studies would arrive, if they come exactly two weeks before the exam. In our reading, that means you commit to a sitting without having seen the clients you will be examined on: you cannot wait for the case studies and then decide. Book on what you know of the syllabus, not on the case.

The CII showed the date bookings open as “TBC” for every 2027 sitting on 7 November 2026, but the closing dates are confirmed. R06 runs only on the scheduled sittings above, whereas the CII says multiple-choice (MCQ) exams are available daily, subject to availability: our CII exams guide explains booking in MyCII, remote invigilation and test centres for all units.

Where and how you sit it:

  • R06 is an on-screen written exam: you type your answers. The R06 exam guides give instructions “for candidates sitting via remote invigilation or at a test centre”, and the CII’s assessment information page says written exams are available at UK and non-UK exam centres.
  • The supplementary information and tax tables are provided within the on-screen exam. An on-screen scientific calculator is provided, or you can use your own physical non-programmable calculator.
  • By remote invigilation you must download a Secure Browser add-on before testing; the CII says the download link is on the exam scheduling site 30 minutes before your exam.
  • Written exams are studied on a 12-month enrolment from the date of purchase. The CII unit shop listed an R06 Assessment Only (digital) option at £200, or £146 for members, on 5 November 2026; in our reading it is the exam entry to use for a resit, but check with CII Customer Service before you buy.

From the CII’s Assessment information page, its two “About your exam” pages for on-screen written exams and the R06 June 2026 exam guide, read 7 November 2026, and the R06 purchase options, read 5 November 2026.

The case study release: your two-week window

The R06 unit page describes the assessment as a “Three hour exam comprising two written case studies on financial planning practice (candidates receive the case studies two weeks prior to exam sitting)”. The CII’s Supporting exam documents page adds the rules for that fortnight:

  • The case studies contain the client information that forms the basis of the exam questions.
  • You cannot take your copy into the exam; the case studies are provided in the online exam, with no new or different information.
  • The questions focus on the clients’ financial objectives identified from the case studies, and a summary of the key objectives is supplied in the exam.
  • Compound interest tables are not provided in any exam, R06 included, so you need the formulae and a suitable calculator.

The CII also lists past case studies on that page: “R06 October 2026 Case Studies (PDF)” was there when we checked on 7 November 2026. They are useful for seeing the length and style of a real release before your own arrives.

Two weeks is not long, so plan the fortnight before it starts. In our suggestion, keep the case-study weeks for the two clients: the tax tables, the R01 to R05 technical content and your exam timing should already be in place by the day booking closes. The countdown below lays those steps out for your sitting.

Which tax year each sitting tests

The R06 unit page says exams are based on the published syllabus and on English law and practice unless otherwise stated, that the general rule is the English legislative position three months before the exam, and that the tax year 2026/2027 will be examined from 1 September 2026 until 31 August 2027. The R06 July 2026-27 syllabus says it is examined over the same dates. The Supporting exam documents page says the 2026-2027 tax tables are provided for candidates taking exams from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2027, so they cover the January, April and July 2027 sittings; for October 2027, confirm the syllabus and tax tables on the R06 unit page.

Two updates sit on the R06 unit page after the Autumn Budget of 28 October 2026: a Budget summary and an October 2026 version of the 2026-27 tax tables. Our suggestion: check the latest materials on the unit page and confirm which updates apply to your sitting’s syllabus and testing position.

Worked example 2

Which tax year will the 5 October 2027 sitting test?

  1. The R06 unit page says the tax year 2026/2027 will be examined from 1 September 2026 until 31 August 2027, and the 2026/27 syllabus is examined over the same dates.
  2. The January, April and July 2027 sittings all fall before 31 August 2027, so they test 2026/27.
  3. 5 October 2027 falls after 31 August 2027, outside that window.

Not confirmed yet, and outside the 2026/27 window. In our reading, the October 2027 sitting falls in the next testing year, which on the same pattern would be 2027/28. We did not find a 2027/28 R06 syllabus or tax tables on the CII pages we checked, so confirm on the R06 unit page before you start studying for October 2027.

From the R06 unit page and the R06 July 2026-27 syllabus, read 7 November 2026. The 2027/28 reading is ours, not a CII statement.

A countdown plan for your sitting

R06 countdown: your sitting, step by step

Choose your sitting. The countdown counts the days from today (your device’s date when the page loads or you change the sitting) to each step, using the CII’s dates. The case-study day is our reading of “two weeks prior”, so it is marked “about”.

Dates from the CII’s Important exam deadlines page, read 7 November 2026. The study suggestions are ours.

WhenWhat the CII setsOur suggestion
Until booking closesBook your sitting (closing dates above)Refresh R01 to R05, learn the tax tables for your sitting (2026/27 for January, April and July 2027) and practise timed answers on past-style cases

Exam dayThree hours, 150 marks, two case studies; the exam guides advise about 90 minutes per case studySpend your time by the marks shown next to each question part
38 days after the examResults, typically by 09:00 UK time, in MyCIIUp to the July 2027 results, the next listed sitting’s closing date is still ahead; check when its booking opens

From the R06 unit page, the Supporting exam documents page and the R06 exam guides of January and June 2026 (150 marks, about 90 minutes per case study), read 7 November 2026. The suggestions are ours.

Our suggestion: practise timed answers before the case-study fortnight starts. The ProSyllabus CII R06 Case Study Pack has four original practice case studies in the R06 layout for 2026/27, with typed answers marked point by point against model answers and your score against the 55% pass mark. They are our own cases, not CII case studies or past papers.

R06 results dates

For on-screen written exams, the CII says results are typically released by 09:00 (UK time) on the published release date, in the Bookings and Results section of MyCII, and a record of achievement for a pass is available on the day of the results release. Results for the 6 October 2026 sitting are released on 13 November 2026. The 2027 results dates are in the table above: 26 February 2027, 28 May 2027, 13 August 2027 and 12 November 2027.

From October 2026 to July 2027, each results date falls before the next sitting closes: the October 2026 results come 52 days before the January closing date, and the January, April and July 2027 results come 38, 24 and 38 days before the next one. The tightest gap is from the April results (28 May 2027) to the July closing date (21 June 2027). The standard pass mark is 55%, and the R06 unit page gives a 2025 pass rate of 71.34%.

Worked example 1

You sat R06 on 6 October 2026. If the result is a fail, can you still sit in January 2027?

  1. The October 2026 results are released on Friday 13 November 2026.
  2. Booking for the January sitting closes on Monday 4 January 2027: 52 days after the results.
  3. The January case studies arrive about Tuesday 5 January 2027 (two weeks before the exam), and the exam is on Tuesday 19 January 2027.
  4. A post-results review of marking must be requested within 20 UK business working days of the results date, and the CII aims to give its outcome within 25 UK business working days of the request, so a review may still be open when booking closes.

Yes, very likely. The January closing date is 52 days after your results, so you have time to decide; check when January bookings open (TBC on 7 November 2026) and book by Monday 4 January 2027. The January results follow on Friday 26 February 2027. Our suggestion, if you ask for a review of marking: consider booking January before its closing date while you wait, because the CII says that if you have booked a resit and the review results in a pass before you re-sit, you can contact Customer Service to claim a refund of the entry fee.

Dates from the Important exam deadlines page, read 7 November 2026; review rules from the Post-results services page, read 5 November 2026. The day count is ours.
