Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic exam blueprint at a glance

The six activities total 125 questions. The blueprint follows the system lifecycle, from planning through installation and commissioning to service, rather than dividing by equipment type, so questions on a given system can appear in four different blocks.

There is no national exam calendar for this trade. Exams are administered on demand by provincial and territorial apprenticeship and certification authorities, so the only firm dates are the eligibility, processing and rewrite clocks in the jurisdiction you apply through.

Refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics arriving from abroad tend to research the Red Seal exam and stop there. The exam is the easy part to research because it is national. What is not national, and what actually determines whether you can sit at all, is the hour requirement, and in this trade the provincial spread is unusually wide: 6,210 work-based hours in British Columbia against 7,200 in Newfoundland and Labrador, and 9,315 hours for a BC challenger who never registers as an apprentice.

A lifecycle blueprint, not an equipment blueprint

The six major work activities follow a system through its life: common occupational skills at 13 questions, routine trade activities at 19, planning installation at 18, performing installation at 26, commissioning at 21 and maintenance and service at 28. That structure matters for revision because it cuts across equipment categories. Knowledge of, say, a supermarket rack system is not a single topic worth a fixed number of marks; the same system generates planning questions in activity C, pipework and charging questions in D, start-up and balancing questions in E and fault-finding questions in F. A candidate who revises by equipment type will find the same gap opening in four places, whereas one who revises by stage of work maps directly onto the question counts.

Maintenance and service at 28 questions and performing installation at 26 are 54 of the 125 questions between them, 43 per cent. Add commissioning at 21 and the hands-on execution blocks are three-fifths of the exam. With a 70 per cent pass mark, roughly 88 correct answers are needed, so a strong performance on the two smaller front-end blocks, common occupational skills and planning installation at 31 questions combined, does not compensate for weakness in service. The flat distribution is a feature of this trade's blueprint: no activity is below 13 questions, so unlike trades with a 7 per cent tail block there is nothing here that can safely be written off.

Hours are provincial and this trade shows the widest spread

SkilledTradesBC sets the programme at 6,210 hours of work-based training across four levels, with technical training of 180, 210, 300 and 300 hours by level, 990 hours in total, taking about four years. Newfoundland and Labrador's trade profile for the same trade puts it at four years and 7,200 hours. Alberta's Trades Qualifier route takes the minimum months and hours from the individual trade profile rather than a single figure, verified with the employer named on the application, and gives 18 months to complete. Ontario runs the trade as Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic, code 313A. Document the hours against the province you intend to certify in, because a shortfall found at assessment is months lost.

The challenge route costs more hours, not fewer

British Columbia's program profile requires 9,315 documented hours of directly related experience to challenge the certification exam, against 6,210 for an apprentice, a premium of over 3,000 hours for not having served a registered apprenticeship. SkilledTradesBC also states more generally that over five years of practical experience is needed to challenge as a Trade Qualifier, that all documents must be in English, that references are contacted by telephone and employers contacted to verify employment, that processing takes about 10 to 12 weeks and longer for international experience, and that the exam must be scheduled and passed within 24 months of approval. Build the evidence file before the application, not after.

Exam mechanics are the same everywhere; the fees are not

The Red Seal Exam Preparation Guide sets four hours, a 70 per cent pass mark, and multiple choice with one correct answer and three incorrect options, each worth one mark. Candidates are supplied with the exam booklet, a diagram booklet where needed, pencil, eraser, calculator, reference materials and scrap paper, and personal electronic devices are prohibited. Fees diverge. Ontario charges 150 dollars plus HST per exam attempt, 235 dollars plus HST for a Trade Equivalency Assessment and 100 dollars plus HST for a reassessment. British Columbia charges nothing for a level exam or its rewrite, 120 dollars for a first challenge certification exam, nothing for a second attempt below 70 per cent, and 100 dollars each for attempts three and four.
