LLQP Accident and Sickness module at a glance

Of the four harmonized modules, Accident and Sickness is the one that appears in every licence class the programme leads to. Segregated Funds and Annuities and Life Insurance are only required where the candidate wants the full life licence, which is why an A and S licensee topping up in Alberta writes only those two.

No sitting calendar is published because none exists: each module is booked individually with the provincial administrator. The two hard deadlines are internal to the candidate's own progress, namely the 24-hour spacing between attempts and the one-year expiry that starts with the first pass.

Candidates most often get the scope of this module wrong in one of two directions. Some assume accident and sickness is a minor adjunct to life and can be revised in an evening; it is a full-length paper of the same size and weight as the Life module, with the same 60 per cent bar. Others assume it is optional if they only want to sell life products; in the harmonized programme all four modules are required for a life licence.

Decide early which licence class you are aiming at

FSRA's licensing FAQ states that the LLQP qualifies an applicant for either a life and accident and sickness agent licence or an accident and sickness only licence. That choice determines how many modules you sit. An A and S only licence rests on the A and S and Ethics content, while the full licence requires Life and Segregated Funds and Annuities as well, which the Alberta Insurance Council confirms by allowing existing A and S licensees to top up with only those two exams. Candidates who intend to sell disability, critical illness and health benefits but not life products should confirm the exact module requirement with their own provincial regulator before paying for a four-module course package they will not use.

The paper is the same size as Life, not smaller

The Insurance Council of BC's examinee guide places Accident and Sickness in the same bracket as Life Insurance and Segregated Funds and Annuities: 35 questions, of which five are pilot items, scored out of 30, with 75 minutes allowed. Only Ethics and Professional Practice is shorter, at 25 questions scored out of 20. Applying the 60 per cent pass mark to a 30-point paper means 18 correct scored answers, so the safety margin is 12 questions across the entire syllabus. Because pilot items are not identified, every one of the 35 must be answered as though it counts, and the effective pace is a shade over two minutes per question.

Use the supplied reference material as a lookup only

The Canadian Securities Institute describes the harmonized exam as open-book with standardised preparation material supplied on tablets. The Insurance Council of BC sets out the conditions: a tablet or, at some locations, a computer holding an electronic version of the approved reference material, calculators supplied, and no other materials permitted. Personal notes stay outside the room. For an accident and sickness paper this matters more than it might for a conceptual subject, because the material is definition-dense, covering benefit structures, waiting periods and contractual terms that reward recall rather than reasoning. Plan to consult the reference for at most a handful of items; anything more and the 75 minutes will run out.

In-person-only sittings reshape the Ontario timetable

Since July 1, 2026 Ontario's LLQP modules must be written in person, following FSRA's March 23, 2026 announcement that online exams were being discontinued to combat misconduct and cheating. FSRA said support remains for candidates facing distance-related difficulties. For a candidate sitting all four modules, that is four supervised appointments rather than four logins, and the scheduling friction is the real cost rather than the 66 dollar per module fee. Because the one-year validity clock runs from the first module passed, candidates in smaller centres should secure appointments for the remaining modules before sitting the first, not after receiving the result.

Budget for what follows the exam, not just the exam

FSRA's licensing FAQ sets out the obligations that begin once the licence is issued: errors and omissions coverage with minimum limits of one million dollars for a single occurrence and two million dollars in the aggregate, including extended coverage for fraudulent acts, maintained throughout the licensing period whether or not the agent is actively selling. Life licences carry two years of mandatory sponsorship, after which an agent can move to non-sponsored status by holding current E and O coverage and completing 30 hours of continuing education. The licence fee is quoted at 150 dollars for a two-year period, and renewals are filed online through Licensing Link within the 60 days before expiry.
