The commonest and costliest mistake in JELET is treating counselling as a slow administrative tail to the exam. It is not. Mathematics alone is 50 of the 120 Paper I marks

Paper I awards 50 marks to Mathematics against 35 for Physics, 25 for Chemistry and just 10 for Fundamentals of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Mathematics and Physics together are 85 of 120, roughly 71 per cent. The FEEE section, which diploma holders often over-prepare because it feels closest to their coursework, is the smallest block in the paper at ten one-mark questions. Within Mathematics, the 40 questions are spread across both Category 1 and Category 2 items, so the same topic can appear as a one-mark single-correct question and as a two-mark multiple-correct one.

The two categories punish guessing very differently

Category 1 questions carry minus 0.25 for a wrong answer, so a blind guess across four options has a negative expectation once you can eliminate nothing. Category 2 questions carry no negative marking at all, but selecting even one incorrect option scores zero for that question, with partial credit only for a subset of genuinely correct options. The practical rule that follows: never leave a Category 2 question blank, because there is no downside, but mark only the options you are confident about, since adding a doubtful fourth option to three correct ones destroys the partial credit you had already earned. On Category 1, attempt only where you can rule out at least two options.

Jadavpur University sets a higher bar than the rest

Collegedunia records that Jadavpur University applies a stricter eligibility threshold than other JELET institutes, 60 per cent for general-category candidates against the 45 per cent general and 40 per cent reserved thresholds that apply elsewhere for a three-year engineering or technology diploma, or a B.Sc. or B.Voc. with Class 12 Mathematics. Candidates in the 45 to 59 per cent band should not build a choice list around Jadavpur; the seat will not be confirmable at document verification even if the rank supports it. The same source puts historical Jadavpur CSE closing ranks for general category in the 8 to 20 band, and government engineering college closing ranks between roughly 150 and 1,200 depending on branch.

Complete the OBC declaration before, not during, counselling

WBJEEB has published a separate declaration of OBC class for availing reservation, an extension notice for it, and guidance on Non-Creamy Layer applicability, alongside the relevant gazette notifications, all listed on the JELET page. These are prerequisites rather than counselling-time paperwork. A candidate who claims OBC reservation in choice filling but has not completed the declaration, or whose Non-Creamy Layer certificate does not match the gazette-notified position, risks the claim being rejected at verification, which converts a reserved-category allotment into no allotment at all. With reporting windows of two to three days, there is no time to repair a certificate problem after allotment.
