People search for Fast Stream work-based scenarios answers because the test feels as if it has hidden right answers. It does have answers: each action you rate has a correct point on a four-point scale. But only one item with answers is published, so a list of answers to memorise does not exist. What you can learn is how to reach the answer yourself. This guide gives a four-step method, works it through on the official example, then answers a practice scenario in full, with a reason for every rating. It ends with tips for the 7-day test window. Are there official answers to the Fast Stream work-based scenarios?

Only for one item. The online-tests page describes the test: you watch short videos of work situations and rate how effective several possible actions would be. It links to a separate example-question page with one scenario, four actions, the correct rating for each and an explanation. The page notes that the actual test uses video and audio content, and that the example shows how to rate the effectiveness of different actions. No other items, no answer key and no pass mark are published.

So a page that offers "the answers" to the real Fast Stream work-based scenarios cannot be offering official ones. What is useful is a way of thinking that reproduces the official answers on the example, applied to new scenarios with the reasoning shown.

The four-point scale the answers are given on

an unacceptable action that would make the problem worse

a useful action that would be of some help

a good action that would help resolve the situation

The descriptions are printed as the official online-tests page gives them, in lower case. Every answer in this guide is one of these four ratings.

A four-step method for working out the answer

Four questions, in order (our method)

1. Name the real problem in one sentence. Not the first thing that happens in the scenario, but the thing that would still be wrong if nobody acted. Details in the scenario are there for a reason; note any that point to a solution.

2. Does the action leave anyone or anything worse off? A person, a relationship, a rule, a deadline someone else relies on. If yes, the answer is Counterproductive, however much it gets done.

3. Does it move the real problem forward at all? If it does no harm but changes nothing about the problem from step 1, the answer is Ineffective.

4. If this were the only thing done, would the situation be on its way to being resolved? If yes, Effective. If it helps but leaves part of the problem, or a person, without an answer, Partially effective.

This is our way of applying the official descriptions, not an official marking rule. Test it against the official example below before you rely on it.

Two habits make the method work. Rate each action on its own, against the scenario, never against the other actions: the scale does not ask you to rank them. And answer from the role you are given in the scenario, which decides what is in your power to do.

The official example puts you in charge of a team on a National Survey project that shares IT equipment with another department. Kamala, a member of your team, says your team has been unable to use the equipment because the other department has been booking a lot more time with it, that she hears they have recently taken on more work, and that some other teams have similar equipment that is not in use right now.

Step 1, the real problem: two teams need the same equipment, and spare equipment exists elsewhere. The detail about other teams’ equipment is the clue.

The official answers are in the last column; the middle columns are our application of the method. The official explanations say A restricts the use of shared equipment, C places the burden on colleagues rather than solving the issue, and D limits the other team’s work, does not open dialogue and creates conflict. B opens a dialogue and offers a constructive alternative. Note what the method had to get right: C sounds assertive and A sounds polite, and both still land on Ineffective.

Worked answer: a colleague falling behind

This scenario is from the ProSyllabus Fast Stream practice set. It is our own practice material in text, not an official item, and the answers are our reading of the published scale. Try it before reading the answers.

You are a team leader in an operational casework team in a government department. Marcus, an experienced caseworker, has missed his weekly target three times running, and the quality team has found two errors in his recent decisions. Other team members have been picking up his overdue cases. One of them, Aisha, has complained to you that this is unfair. Marcus has not raised anything with you himself. The team's monthly performance report is due in two weeks.

Step 1, the real problem: an experienced caseworker’s work has slipped, nobody has talked to him about it, and the team is absorbing the cost. A is the only action that goes to the cause, with the person concerned, and sets a review date, so it is Effective. B fails step 2: it hides the problem and loads more work onto the colleagues who already feel the load is unfair, so it is Counterproductive even though the report would look better. C does something real, since Aisha is heard, but Marcus’s performance is untouched: Partially effective. D looks like action and changes nothing for Marcus: Ineffective.

What the answers had in common across three scenarios

Putting the official example together with the practice scenario on our online tests guide and the one on this page gives three keyed scenarios and 12 rated actions. This table is our reading of what the actions at each rating shared. Only the official example’s answers are official.

The pattern most worth remembering is the bottom row. Counterproductive actions often look decisive. Each of them achieves something, and each makes the situation worse. If an action solves your problem by creating one for someone else, step 2 of the method catches it.
