Tier-I runs 2 hours 30 minutes, deducts one third of a mark for each wrong answer and is qualifying only; the PGT merit list is prepared on Tier-II alone. Shortlisting into Tier-II is at 1:10 against notified vacancies, so about 980 Geography candidates contested 98 posts. The 30 domain marks in Tier-I are case and activity based pedagogy plus NEP-2020, so Tier-I tests no Geography at all; the subject appears only in the Tier-II paper.

This schedule is common to every subject in the ESSE-2025 recruitment: a single notification, a single application window and one Tier-I and Tier-II sitting for all PGT subjects as well as the TGT, Principal and non-teaching posts. Only the Tier-II result date is specific to Geography, because NESTS is finalising and declaring results post by post.

Geography candidates most often mis-read the paper as a theory paper. The syllabus NESTS published on 19 September 2025 devotes two of its nineteen heads to maps alone, Fundamentals of Maps and Topographic and Weather Maps, which is the practical half of the senior secondary course and the part a postgraduate who specialised in, say, population studies is least likely to have touched in years. The second misreading is of the level: these heads are school heads, not research fields.

The syllabus is physical, then India, then human

The published heads run in three arcs. Physical geography comes first: Geography as a Discipline, The Earth, Landforms, Climate, Water and Oceans, and Life on the Earth. India follows as its own block: India Physical Environment, Physiography, Climate, Vegetation and Soil, and Hazards and Disasters with their causes, consequences and management. Human geography closes the list: People, Human Activities, Human Settlements, Transport, Communication and Trade, Resources and Development, Transport, Communication and International Trade, and a final head on geographical perspectives on selected issues and problems. Between them sit Fundamentals of Maps and Topographic and Weather Maps. A candidate can predict the shape of the paper from that ordering: roughly a third physical, a third India, a third human and practical.

Maps are examinable, and they are written

Because the descriptive section carries 60 of the 100 Tier-II marks across 15 questions, map content in Geography does not stay multiple choice. Topographic map interpretation, contour reading and relief identification, scale conversion, direction and grid references, and the symbols of a weather map with isobars, fronts and station models all produce answers that must be drawn and annotated under time pressure. So do the standard diagrammatic answers elsewhere in the syllabus: the pressure belts, ocean current circulation, the hydrological cycle, a fold and fault sequence, the Indian monsoon mechanism. A Geography candidate who prepares only in prose is competing for 60 marks with one hand. Practising the diagram itself, quickly and labelled, is the single highest-return activity for this paper.

98 posts and the highest cut-off in the family

Geography is advertised at 98 posts, the smallest of the four social science and language subjects in this group, with only 42 unreserved. Against that, Adda247 and CareerPower report the highest unreserved Tier-I cut-off of the PGT subjects at 64, ahead of Hindi and History on 62.667 and Commerce on 62.333. The reported OBC cut-off of 59.667 sitting above the EWS figure of 59 is the other signal: the OBC pool for Geography was deep enough to push past the EWS band despite 26 posts against 9. The practical conclusion for a future attempt is that Geography is not the soft option inside the social sciences that its smaller syllabus suggests. A further point for planning: because the merit list rests on Tier-II alone, a Geography candidate who scraped past 64 in Tier-I starts the deciding paper level with someone who scored 80, and nothing from the screening stage carries forward.

Hazards and disasters is the head that pays

Of the nineteen heads, Hazards and Disasters, with causes, consequences and management, and the closing head on geographical perspectives on selected issues and problems are the two most likely to appear as long descriptive questions, because both are structured as problem, cause, effect and response. They also connect directly to the Part-V requirement in Tier-I, where domain knowledge is tested through activity and case-based questions alongside NEP-2020, and to the teaching context: an EMRS teacher in a tribal block may be teaching flood, landslide or drought management in a district that experiences it. Preparing these two heads as case studies with Indian examples, dates and administrative responses covers both tiers at once and gives the descriptive answers the specificity that generic answers lack.

Eligibility and what the posting commits you to

For Geography the bulletin requires a master's degree in Geography or the relevant specialisation with at least 50 per cent, conditional on having studied Geography at graduation, plus a B.Ed. with 50 per cent from an NCTE-recognised institution. The upper age is 40, relaxed to 55 for serving EMRS employees. Beyond the paper, the commitment is specific: the bulletin states that selected candidates can be posted in any EMRS across the country with all-India transfer liability, with rent-free accommodation as available on campus and residential duties beyond normal teaching. Pay is Level 8, Rs 47,600 to Rs 1,51,100, plus a 10 per cent special allowance for those duties, and probation is two years and extendable. No state-wise vacancy table is published, so the 98 posts are a national pool.
