        <p>The Autorite des marches financiers has published pass rates for the period 1 September 2025 to 31 August 2026. Its ethics examination, coded 01-111, was passed by 65 per cent of the 3,441 candidates sitting it for the first time and by 55 per cent of the 1,257 candidates on a subsequent attempt. That makes it the sector examination most often repeated in Quebec.</p>

        <p>The Alberta Insurance Council states that it has suspended all virtual examinations until further notice, to improve the security and integrity of its exams. Alberta candidates must therefore sit the ethics module in person at one of seven centres: Calgary, Edmonton, Grande Prairie, Lethbridge, Fort McMurray, Medicine Hat and Red Deer, the last booked through Red Deer Polytechnic's own system.</p>

The AMF lists E111, Ethics and professional practice (Quebec), as the 11th edition 2024, published on 24 October 2024 and effective in examinations from 6 January 2025.         <p>The Financial and Consumer Services Commission of New Brunswick sets the pass mark at 60 per cent and gives the ethics module 20 questions in 75 minutes, against 30 questions in 75 minutes for each of the other three modules. A life insurance agent must complete all four; an accident and sickness agent completes only Accident and Sickness Insurance plus Ethics and Professional Practice.</p>

LLQP Ethics and Professional Practice at a glance

The ethics module is the shortest of the four but carries the same time allowance, so it is the only module on which pace is not the binding constraint. Alberta supplies the approved study material on an electronic reader during the sitting, which changes how the paper should be worked.

There is no national sitting calendar. Common law candidates book on demand through their provincial regulator, while Quebec candidates pick a seat from the AMF calendar for the city they choose, with seats described as limited and further days added periodically.

The commonest mistake is assuming the ethics module is interchangeable across Canada. It is not. There are two distinct ethics examinations, one written in the context of the common law and one in the context of the Civil Code of Quebec, and passing the wrong one does not satisfy the requirement. FCNB states plainly that a first-time applicant from Quebec must complete the Ethics and Professional Practice module within the context of common law, and that the Civil Law version does not fulfil the requirement.

Two ethics exams, one licence requirement

Quebec runs its own programme under the AMF. Its ethics competency is examination 01-111, phrased as developing an ethical professional practice in compliance with the rules governing the insurance of persons sector, and its manual is E111, Ethics and professional practice (Quebec), 11th edition 2024. A Quebec representative who wants certification elsewhere in Canada takes the separate Canada-context route: manual E112 and examination 01-112, described on the AMF registration form as ethics and professional practice in insurance of persons and group insurance of persons for Quebec residents wishing to practise outside Quebec. Movement the other way is governed by the receiving regulator; FCNB is explicit that the Civil Law paper does not count for a New Brunswick first-time application. Decide which jurisdiction you intend to be licensed in before you buy a course, not after.

Twenty questions, 75 minutes, 60 per cent

FCNB puts the ethics module at 20 questions in 75 minutes and the other three at 30 questions each in the same 75 minutes, with a 60 per cent pass mark throughout. The Alberta Insurance Council adds that each module carries five pilot questions on top of the scored set, so the ethics paper is 25 items in the seat. Two arithmetic consequences follow. First, on a 20-question scored paper each question is worth five percentage points, so eight correct answers out of twenty is a fail and twelve is a pass; there is no margin for casual errors of the kind a 30-question paper absorbs. Second, at roughly three minutes per item the time pressure is materially lower than on the product modules, which is why careless reading rather than pace is the usual cause of a fail.

The Alberta Insurance Council states that a copy of the approved study material is provided on an electronic reader during the exam. That makes the module a navigation test as much as a memory test. The practical preparation is to learn where things sit in the manual rather than to memorise them: the structure of the legal framework section, where beneficiary designation and exemption rules appear, where the claims and benefit payment rules are set out. CISRO's own published set of sample ethics questions references specific sections of the reference manual in its answer explanations, which is a strong hint about how the real items are built. Candidates who have never opened the reader before the sitting lose minutes they cannot recover on the harder scenario items.

CISRO publishes example questions for Ethics and Professional Practice (Canada) under the overarching competency of developing an ethical professional practice in compliance with the rules governing the life insurance sector. The sub-competencies run across the legal framework, the parties to the contract, the rules on contract formation and termination, the main contract provisions, beneficiary designation and exemption from seizure, and the rules governing payment of benefits. The worked topics include Do Not Call obligations, policy ownership, premium payment requirements, the suicide exclusion, conflicting beneficiary designations, FINTRAC reporting duties and client identification standards. Each item is a scenario with four options and a full explanation of why the three distractors fail. Study the distractor reasoning, not just the key.

FCNB sets out a staged attempt rule: two attempts, then a three-month wait before a third, with a six-month wait before a fifth. It also puts a hard shelf life on success, with the course certificate valid only one year and exam results valid a maximum of 12 months from the pass date, so a candidate who passes ethics first and then stalls on the product modules can lose the pass. Booking is provincial. In Alberta you book through your Alberta Insurance Council profile, and virtual sittings are currently suspended, so plan travel to one of the seven listed centres. In Quebec you book a seat from the AMF calendar and payment must clear five business days before the session.
