The distinctive fact about UP PGT Sociology is that it combines a small vacancy count with the highest reported historical cut-off in the family. Candidates routinely treat it as a soft social science and prepare it at the level of a school textbook, which is exactly the wrong reading: 84 posts against a very large pool of sociology postgraduates produces a merit list where a few marks separate selection from nothing.

Small subject, historically the hardest cut-off

Sociology has 84 posts, 75 in boys' schools and 9 in girls' schools. In the 2016 subject-wise tables that Testbook and Adda247 both publish, Sociology recorded 447.96 for general category boys, 439.88 for OBC and 433.00 for SC, higher than Physics at 412.97 and far above Psychology at 372.47. Those figures are from coaching sites, belong to the old 500-mark scheme with no negative marking and an 85:10:5 weighting, and cannot be transposed onto the current 400-mark structure. What they indicate is a pattern: Sociology draws a large field of postgraduates against a modest number of posts, and the margin at the top is narrow. Plan the paper as one where near-perfect accuracy in the subject section, not breadth alone, decides the result.

Theorists and Indian social structure in equal measure

Testbook's syllabus guide describes the UP PGT Sociology syllabus as covering Western thinkers including Comte, Durkheim and Weber alongside Indian scholars; social institutions, stratification and mobility; family structures and marriage systems across religions; caste organisation and rural development; urban problems and social disorganisation; and crime, poverty and welfare programmes. Two halves are visible. One is the classical theory canon, where objective questions attack precise attributions, the titles of works and the exact wording of concepts such as anomie or verstehen. The other is Indian social structure, where the questions are more factual. The overlap with the general knowledge block

Per the revised syllabus summary published by PW, the compulsory 30-question general section covers Indian history and the freedom movement, the physical and economic geography of India and Uttar Pradesh, the Constitution, economic planning and sustainable development, elementary science and Uttar Pradesh culture, demography and agriculture. For a Sociology candidate this is not foreign ground: welfare schemes, rural development, demography and the constitutional provisions on social justice reappear in the subject units. That overlap is worth roughly 90 marks and is one of the few structural advantages this subject has over Physics or Sanskrit, where the two sections share nothing. Prepare the two together rather than as separate projects.

Attribution questions and negative marking

Under Advertisement 06/2026 a correct answer is worth 3 marks and a wrong or multiple answer costs 1. Sociology's theory questions are unusually vulnerable to this, because the distractors are typically other named theorists or adjacent concepts, and a candidate who half-remembers whether a formulation belongs to Durkheim or Merton has a genuine one-in-two chance of losing a mark. In the 2016 cycle, which ran 125 questions with no deduction as reported by GovtExamAlert, there was no cost to that guess. The discipline now is to be strict about attributions and definitions in revision, and to leave the genuinely unrecalled attribution unanswered rather than split the difference.

Eligibility, fee and the compressed window

The post requires a postgraduate degree in Sociology from a recognised university with a B.Ed. from an NCTE-recognised institution, age from 21 years as on 1 July 2026 to a maximum of 62. Fees are 1,500 rupees for general, OBC and EWS candidates, 750 for SC and ST and 500 for persons with disabilities, payable by 17 October 2026. One Time Registration on the UPESSC portal must be completed first. From the close of applications on 17 October to the written examination on 15 December there are under two months, so a Sociology candidate should be revising the theory canon now rather than waiting for the admit card. Pay is Level 8, 47,600 to 1,51,100 rupees.
