ANM(R) and GNM 2026 entrance structure at a glance

Life Science alone carries 50 of the 115 marks, and Life Science plus Physical Science account for 75, roughly 65 per cent of the paper. Only these two subjects contain Category 2 two-mark questions; the remaining four subjects are entirely one-mark Category 1 items. Dates and windows

WBJEEB published an extended schedule of ANM and GNM 2026 counselling and a seat matrix for ANM(R) and GNM counselling 2026 on its portal; those documents are the binding version of round dates. The Round 2 window is dated only approximately here because no source consulted gave its exact allotment date.

What this means for your preparation

The thing candidates most often get wrong here is assuming that qualifying the test is the difficult part. It is not. The eligibility conditions for admission are stricter than the eligibility conditions for sitting the exam, and they are checked at counselling, not at registration. A candidate can legitimately write the paper, obtain a good General Merit Rank, and still be refused a seat at document verification because of domicile, language or gender-of-course conditions that were never tested in June.

Exam eligibility and admission eligibility are different tests

The WBJEEB information bulletin separates the two. To appear, a candidate must be an Indian citizen domiciled in West Bengal, must have passed or be appearing in the 2026 Class 12 examination, and must be at least 17 years old as on December 31, 2026. To be admitted, further conditions apply: a minimum 40 per cent aggregate in 10+2, relaxed to 35 per cent for SC, ST and OBC candidates, a pass in English at 10+2, the ability to read, write and express in Bengali and/or Nepali, and permanent West Bengal residency for the ten years preceding December 31, 2025. Someone appearing in Class 12 in 2026 may sit the exam on a provisional basis and then fail the 40 per cent aggregate test once results arrive.

ANM(R) admits women only; GNM admits both

This is the detail most often reported the wrong way round. The WBJEEB information bulletin states that admission to ANM(R) is for female candidates only, while GNM admits both female and male candidates. At least one widely read admissions portal states the reverse. Male candidates should therefore build their choice list exclusively around GNM seats, and should not spend preference slots on ANM(R) institutes, because an allotment there cannot be converted into an admission. Because choice order drives allotment in a rank-based process, wasted preferences at the top of the list can push a candidate past the GNM seats they would otherwise have secured.

Life Science is where the paper is actually won

Of 115 marks, Life Science carries 50 and Physical Science 25. Basic English is 15, Mathematics 10, General Knowledge and Current Affairs 10, and Logical Reasoning just 5. Life Science and Physical Science are also the only two subjects carrying Category 2 questions, worth two marks each, 10 in Life Science and 5 in Physical Science. In 90 minutes for 100 questions, that is about 54 seconds per question, so the time spent on a five-mark Logical Reasoning section has to be rationed hard. The syllabus is pitched at Class 10 to 12 standard across all six subjects.

Category 1 negative marking changes the guessing arithmetic

Every Category 1 question deducts 0.25 for a wrong answer, and Category 1 items make up 85 of the 100 questions and 85 marks if you count the one-mark items separately from the fifteen two-mark ones. At four options, a pure guess returns an expected value of zero, so guessing is only worth it once you have eliminated at least one option. With 54 seconds per question on average, the disciplined approach is a first pass answering everything known outright, a second pass on questions where elimination is possible, and no third pass of blind filling. The two-mark Category 2 questions concentrated in the science sections deserve the residual time, not the reasoning section.

Reservation and PwD paperwork is verified separately

WBJEEB has published, for this cycle, a declaration of OBC class for availing reservation, an extension notice for that declaration, guidance on the applicability of OBC reservation and Non-Creamy Layer status, the governing gazette notifications, and a separate physical verification of PwD status notice carrying its own schedule. These are not counselling-day formalities. A PwD candidate who does not attend the scheduled physical verification, or an OBC candidate whose declaration was not filed within the extended window, loses the category claim and is reassessed on the general merit rank, which in a three-round process with reporting windows of two or three days usually means losing the seat entirely.

Common questions

Is WB ANM GNM 2026 counselling over?

The centralised process has completed three rounds. Round 3 reporting closed on September 6, 2026, which EduProspect describes as the final day to complete admission at the allotted college. Candidates without a seat are being directed to await a spot admission announcement against seats still vacant after Round 3. As of September 22, 2026 the WBJEEB current-events page for ANM and GNM carries no 2026 spot round notice, so nothing has been scheduled publicly yet.

Can male candidates apply for ANM or GNM in West Bengal?

Per the WBJEEB information bulletin for 2026, admission to ANM(R) is restricted to female candidates, while GNM is open to both female and male candidates. Male candidates should therefore target GNM seats only. Note that some admissions portals state this the other way round; the bulletin hosted on the government CDN is the authoritative text. Both courses additionally require the ability to read, write and express in Bengali and/or Nepali.

What were the exam date and result date for WB ANM GNM 2026?

The OMR-based common entrance test was held on June 14, 2026, a Sunday, from 12:00 noon to 13:30, across 57 examination zones in West Bengal, as listed on the WBJEEB ANM and GNM page. PW reports that the result was declared on July 30, 2026. Rank cards are retrieved from the WBJEEB portal using application number, password and a security PIN, and show the General Merit Rank, any category rank, and qualifying status.

How many marks is the ANM GNM paper and what is the negative marking?

The paper has 100 multiple-choice questions totalling 115 marks in 90 minutes.
