Both services share one notification, one application form, one fee and one written sitting, but the qualifying degree and four of the six papers differ. What this means for your preparation

The commonest mistake is reading IES/ISS as a lighter Civil Services Examination. It is not. There is no preliminary screening stage in the usual sense, the whole written examination is a single three-day sitting, and for IES every one of the six papers is descriptive. The second mistake is arithmetic: 44 posts against a national applicant pool is a far narrower funnel than the headline familiarity of the UPSC name suggests.

Pick the service your degree allows, not the one you prefer

The two services do not share an eligibility route. IES requires a postgraduate degree in Economics, Applied Economics, Business Economics or Econometrics. ISS is open on a bachelor's degree that carried Statistics as a subject in all years, or on a master's in Statistics, Mathematical Statistics or Applied Statistics. A statistics graduate therefore has a genuine entry at bachelor's level that the economics side does not offer, which is one reason ISS intake tends to be the larger of the two, 28 against 16 in the 2026 notification. Check the exact wording in the year's notification before choosing, because the qualifying-degree clause is the most frequent ground on which candidature is cancelled at document verification.

The descriptive papers are where the exam is won

For IES all six papers are descriptive: General English and General Studies at 100 marks each, then General Economics I, II and III and Indian Economics at 200 marks each. For ISS the two General papers and Statistics III and IV are descriptive, while Statistics I and II are objective and run two hours rather than three. That means 600 of the 1,000 ISS written marks and all 1,000 IES written marks are written out by hand under time pressure. Practising full three-hour papers with derivations, diagrams and properly structured answers matters more here than question-bank volume, because there is no objective stage to hide a weak writing habit.

Forty-four posts changes the preparation calculus

With 16 IES and 28 ISS posts advertised in 2026, the margin between a shortlisted candidate and one who misses is small and sits inside the 200-mark personality test as well as the written score. Grand total is 1,200 marks. A candidate who writes a competent but unremarkable set of six papers cannot rely on the interview to rescue the position, because the interview cohort is itself tiny and uniformly strong. The practical implication is to treat the two 200-mark specialist papers you are strongest in as the place to build a lead, rather than trying to be evenly average across all six.

Use the 2027 calendar as a fixed runway

UPSC's annual calendar puts the 2027 notification on 10 February 2027, closing 2 March 2027, with the written examination beginning 18 June 2027 and running three days. That is roughly four and a half months from notification to examination and just under nine months from September 2026. Because the 2026 sitting used two sessions a day across three consecutive days, stamina planning is part of preparation: six three-hour descriptive sessions, or four descriptive and two objective for ISS, compressed into 72 hours. Build at least two full simulated three-day sittings into the final eight weeks rather than single isolated papers.

Age and attempts are tighter than in the Civil Services

The age band is reported as 21 to 30 years, reckoned as on 1 August of the examination year, with the usual relaxations of five years for SC and ST, three for OBC, ten for PwBD and five for ex-servicemen. Attempts are reported as six for general candidates, nine for OBC and unlimited for SC and ST within the age limit. The 30-year ceiling is lower than the Civil Services ceiling, so a candidate running both examinations in parallel should map how many IES/ISS windows actually remain before committing to a multi-year plan; in practice the specialist route closes first.

Is the UPSC IES/ISS 2026 final result out?

Not as of 22 September 2026. The written result was declared on 4 August 2026 and the Detailed Application Form for candidates called to the personality test was open from 11 to 25 August 2026. Personality test dates and the final result had not been announced when this page was last checked. The personality test carries 200 marks on top of the 1,000-mark written examination, giving a grand total of 1,200 marks.

When will the UPSC IES/ISS 2027 notification come out?
