Alerts and Updates for UPSC EPFO (Enforcement Officer / Accounts Officer / APFC)

Updates as of September 22, 2026

The live UPSC EPFO cycle is for Assistant Provident Fund Commissioner only. Veranda Race reports a short notice on 19 August 2026 followed by the full notification on 22 August 2026, with the application window running from 22 August to 11 September 2026 and the recruitment test scheduled for 20 December 2026. Prepp dates the notification a day earlier, on 21 August 2026, but gives the same window and test date.

The Enforcement Officer and Accounts Officer posts are not part of this cycle. Unacademy states that EPFO withdrew its requisition for the 311 EO/AO vacancies on 8 June 2026, and Prepp independently records that the 311 EO/AO vacancies were withdrawn and that the current recruitment is limited to APFC. Anyone preparing specifically for EO/AO should treat the post as having no live notification as of 22 September 2026.

Unacademy (coaching site)

One source contradicts that position. iXamBee states that UPSC advertised 156 EO/AO vacancies on 22 July 2026 with applications from 29 July to 18 August 2026, split UR 78, OBC 42, SC 23, ST 12 and EWS 1. Two other trackers describe the EO/AO requisition as withdrawn, and Careerpower's EO/AO page still shows the notification as awaited. The conflict is unresolved in the sources reachable here; verify before acting on it.

The 80 APFC posts break down as 29 unreserved, 18 OBC-NCL, 15 SC, 10 ST and 8 EWS, with 3 vacancies reserved horizontally for PwBD candidates. Prepp sets that against recent cycles: 159 APFC posts in 2023, 74 in 2025 and 80 in 2026, so the current figure is a marginal recovery on last year and still roughly half the 2023 requisition.

Prepp (coaching site)

UPSC EPFO does not appear in the UPSC annual examination calendar for 2027 released on 20 May 2026, unlike the Civil Services, Engineering Services, Combined Geo-Scientist and Combined Medical Services examinations. It is a recruitment test raised against a departmental requisition rather than a calendared examination, which is why its timing moves year to year and why a withdrawn requisition can remove a post from the cycle altogether.

UPSC EPFO recruitment test structure

Mode and formatOffline pen-and-paper OMR, objective multiple choiceStage one
Questions and marks120 questions at 2.5 marks each, two hours300 marks
Negative markingOne third of the marks for each wrong answer0.833 per error
InterviewFor candidates called after the recruitment test100 marks
Final weightingRecruitment test to interview, as reported for both posts75 to 25

The recruitment test is a single objective paper covering nine areas: General English, Indian Freedom Struggle, Current Events and Developmental Issues, Indian Polity and Economy, General Accounting Principles, Industrial Relations and Labour Laws, General Science and Computer Applications, General Mental Ability and Quantitative Aptitude, and Social Security in India. The same structure is reported for both the APFC and the EO/AO posts; the papers differ in level rather than in shape. The paper is set in both Hindi and English. Because it is offline and OMR-based rather than computer-based, there is no on-screen review or question flagging, and the answer sheet has to be managed by hand within the two hours allowed.

The application window closed on 11 September 2026, so the only action left in this cycle is the recruitment test on 20 December 2026 and the admit card release that precedes it. Testbook's EPFO page headline refers to an extension of the application deadline; no extended date was visible in the sources reachable here, so treat 11 September 2026 as the reported close and check UPSC's own notices if you believe an extension applied to you.

What this means for your preparation

The most damaging assumption about UPSC EPFO is that it is an annual examination like the Civil Services. It is not. It is a recruitment test that UPSC runs when the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation raises a requisition, and a requisition can be withdrawn. The reported withdrawal of 311 Enforcement Officer and Accounts Officer posts in June 2026 is exactly that happening, and it left a cohort of candidates who had prepared for EO/AO with nothing to sit this year except the separate APFC test.

APFC and EO/AO are different recruitments

They share a syllabus and a test format but not their eligibility or their grade. Unacademy gives the maximum age as 35 years for APFC and 30 years for EO/AO, with a bachelor's degree in any discipline required for both. Veranda Race reckons the APFC age limit as on 11 September 2026, the application closing date, with relaxations of three to ten years by category. Careerpower places EO/AO at Level 8 of the seventh pay commission matrix, quoting Rs 43,600 to Rs 55,200; APFC is the senior of the two and is a Group A entry. The practical point is that a candidate aged between 30 and 35 may be eligible for APFC while being time-barred for EO/AO, and should plan around APFC accordingly.

One third negative on 2.5-mark questions

The recruitment test is 120 questions for 300 marks in two hours, so each question is worth 2.5 marks and each wrong answer costs roughly 0.833. That ratio is harsher than it looks against a 300-mark maximum, because the cut-off sits at a low fraction of the total. Careerpower reports the 2023 EO/AO recruitment test cut-off for the general category at 138.33 marks, under half the paper, with a minimum of 50 in the interview. At that level, twenty reckless guesses can erase the benefit of ten extra correct answers. The paper is offline and OMR-based, which also means no on-screen review, no flagging and no automatic tally, so marking discipline has to be built into the attempt strategy rather than managed at the end.

Two subjects are not general studies

Seven of the nine listed areas overlap with any general competitive examination. Two do not: General Accounting Principles, and Industrial Relations and Labour Laws, with Social Security in India sitting close behind. These are where the paper is actually decided, because the general studies portion is well served by existing preparation across the candidate pool while the labour and accounting portions are not. For a post whose day-to-day work is provident fund compliance and enforcement, the labour codes, the Employees' Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act framework and the social security architecture are also the most defensible ground in the interview. Front-load these rather than treating them as the last month's work.

The interview is a quarter of the outcome

Selection runs on a 75 to 25 weighting between the 300-mark recruitment test and the 100-mark interview, reported consistently by Unacademy, Veranda Race and Careerpower. Against 80 posts, the interview list will be a multiple of that, so the 100-mark stage separates candidates who are otherwise close on a paper where the top of the range is compressed. The 2023 reference point of a 50-mark interview minimum, as reported by Careerpower, indicates that the interview also has a qualifying function and is not purely additive. Candidates should prepare it as a domain interview about social security administration, not as a general personality test.

Watch the requisition, not the calendar

UPSC EPFO is absent from the UPSC annual examination calendar for 2027 published on 20 May 2026, which lists the Civil Services, Engineering Services, Combined Geo-Scientist and Combined Medical Services examinations with notification and exam dates a year ahead. EPFO gets no such advance entry, so there is no forward date to plan against and no guarantee of an annual cycle. Prepp's vacancy series makes the volatility concrete: 159 APFC posts in 2023, none reported for 2024, 74 in 2025 and 80 in 2026. A candidate whose whole plan depends on EPFO alone is exposed to a requisition decision they cannot see coming, which is a reason to keep the preparation portable to other graduate-level recruitment with a labour or accounting component.

Common questions

When is the UPSC EPFO APFC exam 2026?

The recruitment test for Assistant Provident Fund Commissioner is scheduled for 20 December 2026, reported consistently by Veranda Race and Prepp. The notification appeared on 22 August 2026, following a short notice on 19 August, and the application window ran from 22 August to 11 September 2026. Prepp dates the notification to 21 August 2026, a one-day discrepancy between trackers. The admit card date has not been announced in any source reachable here; UPSC normally releases e-admit cards a short period before the test.

Is UPSC EPFO EO/AO recruitment happening in 2026?

Probably not, but the sources conflict. Unacademy states that EPFO withdrew its requisition for 311 Enforcement Officer and Accounts Officer vacancies on 8 June 2026, and Prepp separately records that the 311 EO/AO vacancies were withdrawn and the current recruitment is limited to APFC. Careerpower's EO/AO page still shows the notification as awaited. Against that, iXamBee reports 156 EO/AO vacancies advertised on 22 July 2026 with applications from 29 July to 18 August 2026. Treat the withdrawal as the more widely reported position and verify with UPSC before relying on either.

How many APFC vacancies are there in 2026?

Eighty. Prepp and Veranda Race give the same category split: 29 unreserved, 18 OBC-NCL, 15 SC, 10 ST and 8 EWS, with 3 posts reserved horizontally for PwBD candidates. Prepp places that against the recent series of 159 APFC posts in 2023 and 74 in 2025, so 2026 is an increase of six on last year and still well below the 2023 figure. Assistant Provident Fund Commissioner is a Group A entry in the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation.

What is the exam pattern for UPSC EPFO?

A single offline objective paper followed by an interview. The recruitment test is pen-and-paper OMR with 120 multiple-choice questions worth 2.5 marks each, 300 marks in total, over two hours, with one third of the marks deducted for each wrong answer. The interview carries 100 marks. Final selection uses a 75 to 25 weighting between the test and the interview. The question paper is available in both Hindi and English. The same structure is reported for the APFC and EO/AO posts.

What is the age limit for UPSC EPFO APFC and EO/AO?

Unacademy gives a maximum of 35 years for Assistant Provident Fund Commissioner and 30 years for Enforcement Officer and Accounts Officer, with a bachelor's degree in any discipline required for both. Veranda Race reports the APFC limit as 35 years reckoned as on 11 September 2026, the application closing date, with category relaxations of three to ten years. Careerpower gives the EO/AO relaxations as five years for SC and ST, three for OBC and ten to fifteen for PwBD candidates depending on classification. Confirm the reckoning date in the notification, since it moves with each cycle.

What subjects are in the UPSC EPFO syllabus?

Nine areas, as listed by Unacademy: General English; Indian Freedom Struggle; Current Events and Developmental Issues; Indian Polity and Economy; General Accounting Principles; Industrial Relations and Labour Laws; General Science and Computer Applications; General Mental Ability and Quantitative Aptitude; and Social Security in India. The three that separate this paper from a generic graduate-level test are accounting principles, labour law and social security, and they are also the most relevant to the work of provident fund compliance and enforcement, which makes them the sensible priority for both the written test and the interview.
