Alerts and Updates for UP TGT Urdu

Updates as of September 22, 2026

Urdu was the smallest subject block in Advertisement 01/2022, with 13 posts advertised, 12 for men and one for women, out of 3,539 TGT vacancies across fifteen subjects. A single-figure women's vacancy makes the female merit list extremely short and the closing mark correspondingly volatile from cycle to cycle.

Testbook

Despite that small pool, the Urdu cut-off published on 28 July 2026 closed high: 460.000 out of 500 for unreserved men with EWS and OBC both at 452.000, and 484.000 for unreserved and EWS women, 480.000 OBC and 476.000 SC. Only Sanskrit, Hindi, Commerce and vocal music closed higher.

Career Power

Urdu was among the thirteen subjects covered by the institution allotment released on 9 September 2026, in which 2,373 selected candidates were placed against 2,425 posts, with 52 allotments withheld pending documents or eligibility verification. Document verification for declared subjects had run from 9 to 17 July 2026.

Coaching portals report that the next TGT written test will carry 120 questions of three marks each, 90 from the subject and 30 from general studies, for 360 marks in two hours with one-third negative marking, replacing the 125-question, 500-mark paper. No official UPESSC notification confirming this was readable here.

The schedule is common to every subject in the UP TGT recruitment. Urdu candidates sat the same two-day sitting and were processed on the same verification, result and allotment dates as Sanskrit, Science and Social Science; only the vacancy count, the closing marks and the question paper differ by subject.

What this means for your preparation

The mistake most often made about UP TGT Urdu is assuming that a minority-language post with only thirteen vacancies must be easy to win. The opposite held in the 01/2022 cycle: the paper closed at 460.000 of 500 for unreserved men and 484.000 for unreserved women, above Social Science, Home Science and Physical Education. A short merit list against a small vacancy count produces a high closing mark, not a low one.

Thirteen posts changes how you should think about margin

With 12 male and one female post advertised in the 01/2022 cycle, the Urdu merit list is closed by a handful of scores. That has two consequences. First, there is effectively no safety margin: at 460.000 for unreserved men, four marks per question means a single extra wrong answer can move a candidate several ranks. Second, the cut-off is not a stable benchmark to prepare against, because with so few posts a slightly harder paper or a few strong applicants shifts it far more than in Science, where 540 posts produce a deep and smooth list. Prepare for near-perfect accuracy rather than for a target score derived from last cycle.

Literary history is examined as fact, not appreciation

The heaviest section is the history and development of Urdu literature: the Delhi and Lucknow schools of poetry, the emergence and exponents of Dastan, Novel, Afsana, Drama, Ghazal, Qasida, Masnavi, Nazm and Marsiya, the Progressive Writers' movement and Modernism, and the named writers with their principal works. In an objective paper these become one-mark identifications, matching a work to an author, an author to a movement, a movement to a period. The preparation that works is a chronological table of poets and prose writers with their school, their form and their two or three best-known works, revised until recall is instant. Reading the works themselves is pleasant but does not directly earn the mark.

Ilm-e-Bayan and Ilm-e-Badi are pure definition

Classical rhetoric forms its own section: Ilm-e-Bayan, the study of figurative devices such as tashbih, istiara, majaz and kinaya, and Ilm-e-Badi, the study of rhetorical embellishments. Candidates who came to Urdu through literature rather than formal study routinely treat this as minor and lose marks they cannot spare at a 460 cut-off. The section is finite and definitional: learn each device by name, its precise definition and one standard illustrative couplet, and practise identifying the device from the couplet rather than the other way round, since that is the direction the question is usually set in.

The grammar and Devanagari component is the quiet differentiator

Published syllabus summaries place dialects, vocabulary, the Devanagari script, common errors, gender, number, tense, synonyms, antonyms, idioms and proverbs inside the Urdu paper. The gender and number rules of Urdu nouns, and idiom and proverb recall, are where native fluency misleads: a fluent speaker answers by ear and is wrong on the prescriptive form. The presence of Devanagari transliteration reflects the paper's setting in a Hindi-medium state and is worth deliberate practice. Work through error-correction and gender-of-noun drills the way a grammar candidate would, rather than trusting spoken command of the language.

Confirm eligibility before anything else

None of the sources available here sets out the subject-wise eligibility rule for TGT Urdu, although the parallel subjects are specified, for example a B.A. with Sanskrit for TGT Sanskrit and a B.A. with any two social science disciplines for TGT Social Science. Because Urdu is a minority-language post with its own recognised qualifications, the wording of the eligibility clause matters more here than in a mainstream subject, and it is the clause most likely to determine whether an application survives document verification. Read the subject-wise eligibility table in the UPESSC advertisement itself before applying, and do not rely on a coaching summary for this one point.

Common questions

How many UP TGT Urdu posts were advertised?

Thirteen in the 01/2022 cycle, twelve for men and one for women, out of 3,539 TGT vacancies across fifteen subjects, as reported by exam portals. That made Urdu the smallest subject block in the recruitment. It was nonetheless included in the institution allotment released on 9 September 2026, which covered thirteen of the examined subjects. No subject-wise vacancy figure for a future TGT cycle has been advertised by UPESSC.

What was the UP TGT Urdu cut off in 2026?

Under Advertisement 01/2022, published on 28 July 2026, the male list closed at 460.000 out of 500 for unreserved candidates and 452.000 for both EWS and OBC. The female list closed at 484.000 for unreserved and EWS, 480.000 for OBC and 476.000 for SC. These figures are reported by exam portals citing the UPESSC cut-off list. Urdu therefore closed well above Science at 362.880 and Social Science at 404.000 for unreserved men.

What is the syllabus for UP TGT Urdu?

Published summaries give three components. Literature covers the history and development of Urdu literature, the Delhi and Lucknow poetic schools, the forms Dastan, Novel, Afsana, Drama, Ghazal, Qasida, Masnavi, Nazm and Marsiya, the Progressive and Modernist movements, and the major writers and their works. Grammar and language cover dialects, vocabulary, the Devanagari script, common errors, gender, number, tense, synonyms, antonyms, idioms and proverbs. A third component covers Ilm-e-Bayan and Ilm-e-Badi. The subject code is 03.

What is the eligibility for UP TGT Urdu?

The sources available here do not state the subject-wise eligibility clause for Urdu, although they do for other subjects. General UP TGT requirements are a bachelor's degree with B.Ed. or an equivalent training qualification and a minimum age of 21 years reckoned on 1 July of the recruitment year. Because Urdu is a minority-language post with its own recognised qualifications, candidates should read the subject-wise eligibility table in the UPESSC advertisement at upessc.up.gov.in rather than rely on a summary.

Is UP TGT Urdu easier than other subjects because there are fewer posts?

No. Fewer posts shorten the merit list rather than lower it. In the 01/2022 cycle Urdu closed at 460.000 of 500 for unreserved men and 484.000 for unreserved women, higher than Social Science, Home Science and Physical Education and far above Science. With thirteen posts, a small number of strong candidates sets the line, and the closing mark also moves more between cycles than it does in a large subject such as Science, which had 540 posts.

Who conducts UP TGT Urdu now?

The Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission. The UP Education Service Selection Commission Act, 2023, which received assent on 17 August 2023, repealed the UP Secondary Education Service Selection Board Act, 1982 and the Higher Education Services Commission Act, 1980, and created a single body corporate at Prayagraj to conduct examinations and select teachers for non-government aided institutions and to run the state teacher eligibility test. Advertisement 01/2022 is being completed by that commission.
