Home Science is one of the smaller subject blocks in the recruitment but not the smallest, sitting between Mathematics at 533 posts and Music at 33. Home Science does not have a separate notification, window or examination date; it shares all of them with Mathematics, Music, Physical Education and the language papers, and differs only in the subject half of the question paper. What this means for your preparation
The most common misreading of this post is demographic rather than academic. Candidates treat Home Science as a girls'-school subject and assume the roster follows, when the reported vacancy table for the last cycle put 139 of 179 posts in boys' schools and only 40 in girls' schools. The second misreading is that the syllabus is a domestic-skills paper. It is a six-section graduate syllabus in which nutrition science, child development and textile technology are examined as sciences.
Read the roster before you read the syllabus
Of the 179 Home Science posts reported for Advertisement 01/2022, 139 were in boys' schools and 40 in girls' schools, the reverse of what most applicants expect from the subject. The consequence shows in the cut-off: the girls'-school unreserved figure of 416 sat four marks above the boys'-school figure of 412, and the OBC gap ran the same way, 404 against 400. Scheduled Caste was the exception, 384 for girls against 392 for boys. When the next advertisement appears, check the boys' and girls' columns for Home Science specifically before deciding which roster you are realistically competing on, because forty posts across the state is a very thin field.
Food and nutrition is the load-bearing section
Of the six sections UPESSC lists, food and nutrition is the broadest: nutritional concepts, food composition, balanced diets, deficiency diseases, food preservation and therapeutic diets for particular conditions. Health overlaps with it on personal hygiene, environmental health, disease prevention and primary care, so the two are best revised together and tested together. Between them they typically account for the largest share of factual questions, and they are also the sections where a candidate from a B.Sc. Home Science background has a real advantage over one from a B.A. Home Arts route.
Clothing, textiles and home management are the scoring sections
Clothing and textiles covers fibre classification, fabric selection, garment construction and embroidery techniques, and home management covers family budgeting, resource management, decision-making and energy conservation. Both are finite, definition-heavy and highly predictable in an objective paper: fibre families, weave types, stitch names, the steps of the management process, budgeting heads. They do not reward depth, they reward completeness, and a candidate who works through them systematically can bank those marks with near certainty. Leaving them to the last fortnight is the common error, because they look easy and then turn out to be a long list.
Child development and extension education carry the pedagogy
Child development deals with growth progression, school health and mental wellness in children; extension education covers the branches of Home Science, community outreach methods and teaching approaches. These are the only parts of the paper that touch teaching practice, and they are also the sections most likely to be rephrased year to year, because outreach and school-health content moves with government programmes. A candidate who has read only a textbook account of extension education will be unprepared for a question tied to a current nutrition or health scheme, so keep one eye on recent public-health and school-nutrition initiatives while revising these two.
Thirty General Studies questions are new exposure
Under the revised scheme reported for the coming cycle, Home Science questions fall from 125 to 90 and a 30-question General Studies section appears, covering current affairs, teaching and research aptitude, ICT, environment, Indian history and geography, the Constitution and the economy.
