The UP TGT Art paper and post count

The single most surprising fact about this paper for practising artists is that it does not test practice. There is no drawing test, no portfolio and no studio component at any stage; the entire selection is an objective written paper on the history and theory of Indian art, followed by document verification.

This calendar is common to every subject in the Trained Graduate Teacher recruitment; Art shares one notification, one application window and one examination date with Agriculture, Hindi, Science and the rest. Only the vacancy count, the cut-off, the qualification route and the syllabus above are specific to Art.

What this means for your preparation

Candidates apply for TGT Art on the strength of a fine-arts qualification and then prepare as artists. The paper does not reward that. It is an objective examination on the history of Indian painting, with no drawing test and no portfolio at any stage, and it closed last cycle at 480 out of 500 for unreserved male candidates, the highest threshold in the published subject tables. Practical skill secures eligibility; dates, schools, patrons and painters secure the post.

Five mistakes in 125 questions was the limit

The Art cut-offs for the concluded cycle were 480 unreserved, 476 OBC, 472 EWS and 468 SC, for male candidates, against a 500-mark paper of 125 questions at four marks each. Unreserved candidates could therefore afford five errors and SC candidates eight, a spread of only twelve marks across all categories, which is unusually compressed. The reason is structural rather than a matter of the cohort being unusually strong: the concluded paper carried no negative marking and the TGT route has no interview, so almost every candidate attempted almost every question and the whole field bunched at the top. Accuracy on factual recall, not analytical depth, separated the list.

The syllabus is chronological and should be revised that way

The ten units run in historical order: prehistoric rock-art centres at Mirzapur, Bhimbaithka, Saygarh, Banda, Panchmarhi and Hoshangabad; Indus Valley material from Harappa and Mohenjo Daro; the six limbs of Indian painting with the frescoes of Ajanta, Bagh, Badami, Ellora and Sittanvasal; Jain, Pal and Apabhransh miniature traditions; the Rajasthani schools of Bundi, Kota, Kishangarh and Jaipur; Mughal painting under Akbar, Jahangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb; the Pahari styles of Kangra and Basohli; the Bengal School; contemporary painting; and the fundamentals of art. Because the units are defined by named sites and named schools, the efficient revision unit is a site-or-school card carrying period, patron, characteristic technique and representative works.

Named painters are the highest-density questions

Two units are defined almost entirely by individuals. The Bengal School unit names Abanindranath Tagore, Nandalal Bose and Asit Kumar Haldar; the contemporary unit names Raja Ravi Varma, M F Husain and Amrita Sher-Gil. Objective papers on art history lean heavily on attribution, because a painter, a work and a movement can be tested in a single line with four options. Prepare each named artist as a fixed set of facts: dates, training, movement, signature technique, two or three canonical works and the museum or collection associated with them. This is also where a candidate whose reading is in English should cross-check the Hindi terminology, since the paper is set for a Hindi-medium teaching post.

The fundamentals unit is theory, not studio work

The tenth unit covers line, size, colour tone, cross spacing and the principles of picture composition. A practising artist knows these by hand and can still lose the marks, because the questions ask for the named principle rather than its application: which principle governs a particular balance, what a given term denotes, which element is being described. Learn the vocabulary as vocabulary. Testbook additionally reports that the paper carries general awareness, general English and quantitative aptitude alongside the Art questions; this is not corroborated elsewhere and sits awkwardly with the subject-only description of the concluded paper, so treat it as unverified and prioritise the ten Art units.

Eligibility runs through fine arts, not an academic degree

Art is one of the TGT subjects with its own qualification route, and it is wider than a single degree. Reported accepted routes include a BA in drawing or painting, a diploma in fine arts from Kala Bhawan Shantiniketan, and recognised drawing certificates from approved institutions, alongside the general B.Ed requirement that applies across most TGT subjects. The age band in the last cycle was 21 to 60 years as at 1 July. Because the accepted certificate list is institution-specific and the governing statute was amended in 2026, verify the holding against the qualification clause of the new advertisement before paying the fee; a diploma accepted in an earlier cycle is not automatically carried forward.

Is there a practical or drawing test in UP TGT Art?

None is described at any stage. The written paper is objective and set on the history and theory of Indian art. A fine-arts qualification is what makes a candidate eligible to sit; it is not itself assessed. Candidates whose strength is practice rather than art history should plan accordingly, because the entire merit list comes from the written score.

How many UP TGT Art vacancies were there?

One hundred and forty-eight under Advertisement 01/2022, comprising 132 posts in boys' schools and 16 in girls' schools, out of 3,539 TGT posts in that cycle. That makes Art much the largest of the specialist subjects: Agriculture carried 47 posts, Urdu 13, Commerce 38 and instrumental music ten. No Art figure exists for the next cycle, since no fresh TGT advertisement had been released as at 22 September 2026 and the reported total post counts are not broken down by subject.

What qualification is accepted for UP TGT Art?

Reported routes include a BA in drawing or painting, a diploma in fine arts from Kala Bhawan Shantiniketan, and various drawing certificates from recognised institutions, in addition to the B.Ed requirement that applies to most TGT subjects. This is deliberately broader than the single subject degree required for Science or Mathematics, because the teaching post is a specialist one. Will the UP TGT Art paper change for the next cycle?

Possibly. Coaching sites report a move from 125 subject questions worth 500 marks with no penalty, to 120 questions worth 360 marks made up of 90 subject and 30 general studies questions, with negative marking introduced. The general studies block is described as covering current affairs, teaching and research aptitude, ICT, environment, Indian history and geography, and the constitution and economy. None of this is confirmed in a commission advertisement. The ten Art units themselves are not reported as changing, so subject preparation is safe to begin now.
