Dates and windows

This calendar is common to every subject in the recruitment, English included; there is no separate English window or date. Because English is the second-largest subject in the advertisement, it is among the subjects most likely to be seated across the larger of the two December sittings, but the Commission had not published that allocation when this page was compiled. English candidates applying against the 29 girls'-school posts should confirm that choice on the form before 21 October, since the school category cannot be amended once the correction window closes.

What this means for your preparation

English candidates for this post almost always prepare the literature half and assume the language half will look after itself. The published syllabus does not support that. Comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, sentence transformation, narration and word formation are listed as a section in their own right, and they are examined in the same 90 questions as Chaucer and Eliot. The other habitual error is inferring that 285 posts, the second-largest allocation in the advertisement, means a soft cut-off; the historical record points the other way.

The language section is examinable, not decorative

Published syllabus summaries list the language section as unseen comprehension passages, grammar including tenses, punctuation, prepositions and direct and indirect narration, vocabulary including synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, idioms and phrases, sentence correction, transformation and rearrangement, and word formation through prefixes, suffixes and one-word substitution. None of this requires a postgraduate reading list, which is exactly why it is neglected. It is also the part of the paper that can be answered fastest and most reliably under a two-hour limit for 120 questions, so it functions as the time bank that pays for slower literature and general knowledge questions. Rehearse it to the point of near-automatic answering rather than trusting fluency acquired from reading.

Literature is examined by period, form and critic, not by plot

The literature section as published is organised around the Renaissance and Reformation, the Restoration, the Neo-Classical, Romantic, Victorian and Modern periods; the figures of speech from simile and metaphor through oxymoron, synecdoche, metonymy and transferred epithet; rhetoric, prosody, rhythm and metre; the poetic and dramatic forms including sonnet, ballad, elegy, ode, epic and mock epic and the types of novel; and named critics from Aristotle and Longinus through Johnson, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Arnold and Eliot. The author list spans Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton, Keats, Shelley, Lamb, Dickens, Tennyson, Hardy, Frost, Whitman, Hemingway, Faulkner, Miller and Morrison alongside Kamala Das, Mulk Raj Anand and Nissim Ezekiel. Questions built on that structure test placement and attribution far more than narrative recall.

Most posts does not mean lowest bar

English is second only to Hindi in size, with 256 boys'-school posts and 29 girls'-school posts. It is also the subject with the deepest applicant pool in this family, because an English postgraduate with B.Ed. has no alternative subject to switch to in the same advertisement, whereas a Commerce or Economics graduate sometimes does. The two published cut-off compilations disagree sharply about where that leaves the English cut. Compilations of the 2016 merit list place English lowest of the four large arts and commerce subjects, near 338.96 for General in boys' schools; one table circulated for a more recent cycle places English highest, near 440. Both are secondary sources on a 500-mark base and neither should be planned around.

Prosody and criticism are the reliable scoring pocket

Of everything in the literature section, the parts that reward systematic revision most are the ones candidates find least interesting: metre and scansion, the fixed verse forms, the named figures of speech, and the critical positions of Aristotle on catharsis, Longinus on the sublime, Wordsworth and Coleridge on poetic diction and imagination, Arnold on the touchstone method and Eliot on tradition and impersonality. These are closed, finite bodies of material with unambiguous answers, which is precisely what an OMR paper with negative marking rewards. By contrast, questions ranging freely across the author list are open-ended and cannot be exhausted. Secure the closed material first and treat wide reading as the top-up.

Sequencing the last eight weeks before December

With the examination on 15 and 16 December and applications closing 17 October, the usable preparation period is roughly two months after the form is filed. A workable order is language mechanics first, because it is finite and improves fastest; then the period-and-movement scaffolding into which every literature question is slotted; then criticism and prosody as closed lists; then the general knowledge block, which for an English candidate has no subject overlap at all and so needs dedicated rather than incidental time. Reported general studies coverage includes current affairs, Indian history, polity, economy and geography, general science with health and nutrition, and information technology including Python, none of which an English syllabus touches.
