Alerts and Updates for Railway LDCE Assistant Electrical Engineer

Updates as of September 22, 2026

Southern Railway's AEE notification for this cycle, G25045, advertised eight Group B Assistant Electrical Engineer vacancies at Pay Matrix Level 8, of which seven were unreserved and one reserved for Scheduled Tribe candidates, with one post carrying horizontal reservation for a person with benchmark disability under clause b. The application window ran from 7 August to 28 August 2025.

The AEE paper was the hardest-scoring of the eight posts in the 2026 centralised test. A post-wise analysis of the two sittings reports AEE average scores of 40.92 and 36.85 out of 150, against 86.12 and 82.94 for APO and 78 for ASTE. About 7,845 candidates are reported to have sat AEE across the two dates. This is a specialist departmental blog's analysis, not a Board release.

Eligibility for AEE is a grade-and-service test, not a degree test. The notification opens the post to non-ministerial Group C staff of the Electrical Engineering department holding a post in Level 6, Rs 35,400 to 1,12,400, and above, with five years of regular non-fortuitous service in Level 6 or above as on 1 January 2025. No engineering qualification is specified.

Running staff are not shut out. The same notification allows running staff in Grade Pay Rs 2,400, Level 4, to count when their post is equated to a stationary post in Grade Pay Rs 4,200, Level 6, or above. The equation, not the running designation, is what establishes the feeder grade for an AEE application.

Southern Railway notification G25045

The professional syllabus for AEE was reset by Railway Board letter E(GP)2022/2/4 of 7 November 2022, which prescribed a centralised computer based multiple choice objective examination and a fresh professional syllabus for 70 per cent selections and 30 per cent LDCEs in all departments with organised services, applicable to selections and LDCEs held from 1 January 2023.

Who is in the AEE feeder pool

Eligible categoryGrade requiredService required
Non-ministerial Group C staff of the Electrical Engineering departmentLevel 6 (Rs 35,400 to 1,12,400) and aboveFive years regular, non-fortuitous, in Level 6 and above as on 01.01.2025
Running staff of the Electrical departmentGrade Pay Rs 2,400 (Level 4), where equated to a stationary post in Grade Pay Rs 4,200 (Level 6) or aboveSame five-year condition, counted on the equated grade
Staff holding Level 6 on an adhoc basisLevel 6, but not held substantivelyNot eligible
Staff whose Level 6 came from MACP financial upgradationLevel 6 by financial upgradation, not by promotion to the postNot eligible
Educational qualificationNone specified in the notificationEligibility turns on grade and service alone

The exclusions matter more than the inclusions. Southern Railway's AEE notification bars staff officiating in Level 6 on an adhoc basis and staff who reached Level 6 through MACP financial upgradation rather than through a functional promotion, and requires lien and seniority to be held in the relevant Southern Railway cadre. An electrical fitter or a technician who has drawn Level 6 pay for years under MACP but whose post remains below Level 6 is outside the feeder pool.

The written test, its result and the panel date are common to all eight posts in the centralised examination; only the notification window and the vacancy count are specific to AEE and to the zone. Southern Railway's AEE window is given here as the worked example because that notification is published in full; other zones ran their own Electrical notifications on their own dates.

What this means for your preparation

Electrical staff routinely assume the AEE examination is closed to them because they hold a diploma rather than a degree. The notification says nothing about a degree at all. What it asks for is a substantive post in Level 6 or above in the Electrical Engineering department and five years of regular service in that grade as on 1 January 2025. The barrier that actually removes people is the MACP exclusion, not the qualification column.

The degree question, answered plainly

Southern Railway's AEE notification prescribes no educational qualification. Eligibility is defined by the grade held and the length of regular service in it: Level 6 and above in the Electrical Engineering department, five years non-fortuitous as on 1 January 2025. A B.Tech in electrical engineering confers no advantage in eligibility and no weighting in the marks. The degree route into the same cadre exists, but it is the direct-recruitment route into the Group A service through the Civil Services Examination, which is a separate competition with its own age and qualification rules. Candidates who have both a degree and the feeder grade should note that the LDCE counts only the second of the two.

Four railway electrical streams carry the professional marks

The professional syllabus prescribed for AEE is in two parts. Part one is general electrical engineering, and now includes climate change, renewable energy resources and applications, solar technology, wind turbines and energy storage. Part two is railway electrical engineering under four heads: general services, covering XLPE cables and their rating and derating, building electrification and wiring, station illumination, water supply pumping, lifts and escalators and energy conservation; traction distribution, covering 1x25 kV and 2x25 kV power supply installations, SCADA and remote control, non-destructive testing and safety on electrified sections; train lighting and air-conditioned coaches, covering ICF and LHB coach electricals and heat load; and electric loco and EMU operations, covering crew management and online troubleshooting.

You will be examined outside your own sub-cadre

The structural trap in the AEE paper is that the four railway electrical heads are not optional streams. A candidate who has spent fifteen years in traction distribution is still examined on LHB coach air-conditioning heat load and on lift and escalator maintenance, and a train lighting hand is still examined on 2x25 kV feeding arrangements and SCADA. The professional portion is a single pool of questions spanning all four heads plus general electrical engineering. The sensible reading of that is to accept a low ceiling on your home subject and spend the preparation time on the three heads you have never worked in, where the marginal return per hour is much higher.

The 2026 scores say the paper punished everyone

In the 2026 sitting, AEE recorded the lowest averages of the eight posts: 40.92 and 36.85 out of 150 across the two dates, against 78 for ASTE and 86 and 83 for APO. Roughly 7,845 candidates are reported to have sat it, second only to AOM. The normalisation gap between the two AEE dates is reported at 4.07 marks, which is moderate. Two things follow if those reported figures hold. A raw score that looks poor in absolute terms may still sit above the AEE field, because the field itself scored low. And normalisation of about four marks is large enough to reorder candidates who are close together but not large enough to rescue a clear shortfall.

What Level 8 opens, and how long it takes

The post is in Pay Matrix Level 8. For a candidate coming from Level 6 that is a two-level jump achieved in one examination, which is the reason the 30 per cent LDCE is worth sitting even when seniority would eventually deliver the same post through the 70 per cent route. Beyond Group B, the Indian Railway Management Service (Group A) Rules 2022 fill 50 per cent of Junior Time Scale vacancies, Level 10 and Rs 56,100 to 1,77,500, by promotion through selection from Group B officers in Level 8 or Level 9 with a minimum of three years regular service in the grade, the other half going to direct recruits. Senior Time Scale is Level 11.

Common questions

Do I need a B.Tech or a diploma in electrical engineering to apply for railway AEE through LDCE?

Southern Railway's AEE notification G25045 specifies no educational qualification. It requires a substantive non-ministerial Group C post in Level 6, Rs 35,400 to 1,12,400, or above in the Electrical Engineering department, and five years of regular non-fortuitous service in that grade as on 1 January 2025. A degree neither qualifies you without the grade nor adds marks if you have the grade. The degree-based entry into the same cadre is direct recruitment to the Group A service, which is a different competition.

Can running staff apply for the AEE 30 per cent LDCE?

Yes, on an equation. The notification states that running staff in Grade Pay Rs 2,400, Level 4, are eligible where their post is equated to a stationary post in Grade Pay Rs 4,200, Level 6, or above. The five-year service condition is then applied on that equated grade as on 1 January 2025. Candidates in this position should get the equation recorded by their personnel branch before the eligibility list is drawn, because the list is finalised before the examination and is not reopened for individual claims afterwards.

I got Level 6 under MACP. Am I eligible for AEE?

No. Southern Railway's AEE notification excludes staff who have been granted financial upgradation under MACP, and separately excludes staff holding Level 6 on an adhoc basis. MACP gives the pay of the higher level without the post; the LDCE feeder condition is about the post held, not the pay drawn. This is the single most common reason for an Electrical department application being rejected at the eligibility list stage, and it is not curable by length of service.

How many vacancies were there for AEE in this cycle?

Vacancies are declared zone by zone, not centrally. Southern Railway declared eight AEE posts in notification G25045: seven unreserved and one for Scheduled Tribe candidates, with one post carrying horizontal reservation for a person with benchmark disability under clause b. All are at Pay Matrix Level 8. Other zonal railways issued their own Electrical notifications with their own counts, so the operative figure for any candidate is the one in their own zone's notification.

What does the AEE professional paper cover apart from traction?

More than traction. The prescribed syllabus has a general electrical engineering part that now includes renewable energy, solar, wind and storage, and a railway part in four heads. Besides traction distribution, which covers 1x25 kV and 2x25 kV power supply installations, SCADA, non-destructive testing and safety on electrified sections, the heads are general services, covering XLPE cables, building electrification, illumination, water supply pumps, lifts and escalators and energy conservation; train lighting and AC coaches, covering ICF and LHB stock and heat load; and electric loco and EMU operations.

Why were AEE marks in the 2026 exam so much lower than for other posts?

A post-wise analysis of the two sittings reports AEE averages of 40.92 and 36.85 out of 150, the lowest of the eight posts examined, with about 7,845 AEE candidates across the two dates. The same analysis puts APO near 85 and ASTE near 78. The figures come from a specialist departmental blog rather than an official Board release, so they are reported rather than confirmed. If they are right, an AEE score should be judged against the AEE field, not against the marks circulating from other departments.
