CIPLE at a glance

CIPLE certifies a basic general ability to interact in a limited number of predictable everyday situations. A school version exists for candidates aged 12 to 15. Exams are sat at accredited centres called LAPE, and the centre contacts each candidate by email with the date of the oral component.

Dates and windows

Registration windows open roughly six weeks before each sitting and close one to three weeks before it, and CAPLE notes that the May, July and November sessions at the Lisbon LAPE-FLUL centre fall on different dates for logistical reasons. Results are published around seven to eight weeks after the paper.

What this means for your preparation

The recurring mistake is planning around the exam date and discovering the registration window shut weeks earlier, or that the session is full. The second is assuming the language certificate is the whole nationality requirement. Since 19 May 2026 it is not: the law now also asks for demonstrated knowledge of Portuguese culture, history, national symbols, fundamental rights and duties and the political organisation of the State.

Register on the opening day, not the closing one

The 2026 calendar shows what happens otherwise. The February and March CIPLE sittings are both marked full, and later sessions are capped at 175 candidates. Windows open at three in the afternoon on a stated day and close one to three weeks before the exam. For the 17 October sitting registration ran from 7 September to 5 October; for 7 November it runs from 14 September to 20 October. CAPLE also restricts candidates to one exam per session, so there is no option of hedging across levels in the same round. Treat the opening date as the real deadline and the closing date as the fallback.

Where the marks actually sit

CIPLE is not evenly weighted and the balance favours candidates who read and write. Reading and written production and interaction carries 45 per cent over 1 hour 15 minutes, listening carries 30 per cent over 30 minutes, and speaking carries 25 per cent over about 15 minutes for a pair of candidates. The overall pass is 55 per cent, with Suficiente at 55 to 69, Bom at 70 to 84 and Muito Bom at 85 to 100. For a self-taught learner the 30 per cent listening block is usually the weakest and the cheapest to fix, since A2 audio material is widely available and the component is short.

What the May 2026 law changed and what it did not

Lei Organica number 1 of 2026 was published on 18 May 2026 and took effect the next day. Article 6 sets naturalisation by residence at seven years for nationals of Portuguese-speaking countries and EU member states and ten years for everyone else, counted in the law's terms of lawful residence. For an Indian applicant that is the ten-year track. The language element is expressed as sufficient knowledge of the Portuguese language, proved by an approved test or certificate, which is the role CIPLE plays. What is new is that the same provision now also covers culture, history and national symbols, and adds a separate requirement on rights, duties and the political organisation of the State.

The solemn declaration and the wider file

Article 6 also requires applicants to declare solemnly their adherence to the fundamental principles of the democratic rule-of-law State. This is a distinct condition from the knowledge tests and is not discharged by a CIPLE certificate. The criminal record rule was reworked at the same time, with the automatic bar for sentences of three years or more now tied to specified categories, including terrorism, violent crime, organised crime, offences against State security and immigration trafficking, rather than to ordinary offences generally. None of this alters the CIPLE exam itself, but it changes what a complete nationality file has to contain alongside the certificate.

Plan for the result date, not the exam date

CAPLE publishes result dates with the calendar and the gap is substantial. The 19 September 2026 sitting reports on 9 November, the 17 October sitting on 10 December, and the 7 November sitting not until 14 January 2027. That is seven to eight weeks after the paper. Anyone whose residence-permit clock or application appointment falls in that window should sit an earlier session rather than the nearest one. Candidates outside Portugal have fewer options again, because only the May, July and November sessions run internationally, which effectively makes 7 November the last overseas opportunity in the 2026 cycle.

When is the next CIPLE exam I can still register for?

As of 22 September 2026, two sittings are open. Registration for the 17 October 2026 exam opened on 7 September and closes on 5 October 2026, with results on 10 December. Registration for the 7 November 2026 exam opened on 14 September and closes on 20 October 2026, with results on 14 January 2027. Both are capped at 175 places on the published CAPLE calendar, and earlier 2026 sittings in February and March are already marked full.

What is the pass mark for CIPLE?

Fifty-five per cent overall. CAPLE grades a pass as Suficiente from 55 to 69 per cent, Bom from 70 to 84 and Muito Bom from 85 to 100. The mark is built from three weighted components: reading and written production and interaction at 45 per cent over 1 hour 15 minutes, listening comprehension at 30 per cent over 30 minutes, and speaking at 25 per cent, taken in about 15 minutes for a pair of candidates. CIPLE is set at CEFR level A2.

How much does CIPLE cost?

CAPLE's own CIPLE page lists 95 euros. Lower figures, including 72 euros, still circulate on third-party guidance sites, so the figure on the CAPLE exam page should be treated as the current one and checked again before paying. Registration is made through the CAPLE platform; you complete the registration form, receive an email confirmation and are given a candidate code, which is needed on the day of the exam and to retrieve your result afterwards.

Is CIPLE still enough for Portuguese nationality after the 2026 law?

The language element of article 6 remains sufficient knowledge of the Portuguese language, proved by an approved examination or certificate, which is what CIPLE at A2 provides. Lei Organica number 1 of 2026, in force from 19 May 2026, added further conditions in the same provision: sufficient knowledge of Portuguese culture, history and national symbols, and of the fundamental rights and duties of Portuguese nationality and the political organisation of the State, together with a solemn declaration of adherence to democratic principles.

How long do I now have to live in Portugal before applying?

Under Lei Organica number 1 of 2026 naturalisation by residence requires seven years of lawful residence for nationals of Portuguese-speaking countries and of EU member states, and ten years for nationals of other countries. Indian nationals fall in the ten-year category. The law was published on 18 May 2026 and entered into force the following day. Can I sit CIPLE outside Portugal?
